NORTHEASTERN POWER OUTAGE SHUTS DOWN INTERNET FOR ARIZONA
This Publication is Late - The major power outage in the northeastern state in New York, Ohio and Michigan has caused the loss of most of the Citizen's/Frontier internet services in the country, including Mohave County. Although our "gateway" to the internet is local, people who have websites or use web-based Citizen's/Frontier email are shut down until the power in New York is restored. The "big" server that holds all the internet websites and email is affected by the power outage. In fact, the pictures and graphics in this E-News may not be able to be seen until the power outage is resolved. Details can be seen on TV or go to www.cnn.com.

TEEN DIES IN CAR STUNT
Laughlin - A tragic early morning accident on Casino Drive in Laughlin has claimed the life of an 18-year-old Bullhead City man. According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police detective Doug Nutton, the incident occurred about 3 a.m. on Monday. "Matthew Weaton was driving his vehicle and decided to exit through the passenger side window. His friend Shane Clouse was going to slide over and take control of the wheel. Matthew exited the car and was attempting to climb upon to the roof, lost contact with the vehicle and fell off of the car and landed in the opposing travel lane. Another vehicle, operated by Kirk Harper, drives over him," he said. Weaton was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is continuing, no one has been charged at this time.

THEFT OF SERVICES
Mohave Valley - While investigating a possible theft of water services in the 10000 block of Zinc Thursday morning, a Mohave County Sheriff's Deputy contacted Robert Alan Young, 40, who resides in the 10000 block of Mint. The deputy reportedly found Young attempting to hide beneath his residence. Young reportedly admitted to illegally obtaining electrical service. An employee with the Mohave Electric Cooperative disconnected the hook up and Young was taken into custody on felony theft of services charges.

WEST NILE VIRUS IN AZ
Mohave County - The Mohave County Department of Public Health reported that a mosquito sample collected in Cochise County tested positive for the virus. Jennifer McNally, spokesperson for the Health Department, said, "Part of the press release was to get the information out to the public, but also to let them know what they can do to prevent being bitten." This is the first case reported in Arizona and the Arizona Department of Health services has issued an order making the West Nile virus a reportable disease. Under the order, a physician or health care facility is required to submit a communicable disease report of a suspected case within 24-hours to the local health department. To find out more about the West Nile virus, go to www.healthElinks.com.

2nd METH LAB SUSPECT DIES
Needles - Another man involved in an alleged meth lab that exploded has died. Michael Paulson, 30, died at University Medical Center in Las Vegas from burns he suffered when a mobile home located at Park Moabi burst into flames August 4. The meth lab explosion previously claimed the life of Bradley Vazzana, 41, of Bullhead City and injured three others.

NO CASINO IN LHC
Highland, CA - The chairman of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians said the Tribe's plans for the English Village in Lake Havasu City, which the Tribe has indicted an interest in purchasing, would not include a casino. "We believe that the best use of that property is more of an entertainment type use where it's going to be a restaurant with a ability to bring in people from the city and to get the people off their boats, to create foot traffic and circulation within the English Village proper," the spokesman said. The 6.5 acre property goes to public auction next month and includes most of the village north of London Bridge.

HOUSING TO MAINTAIN STRENGTH DESPITE HIGHER INTEREST RATES.
NAR predicts 2003 will be a record year for home sales RISMEDIA, August 8-Even with a sharp rise in mortgage interest rates in recent weeks, housing markets are expected to maintain strong levels of activity for the balance of the year, according to the National Associations of Realtors. David Lereah, NAR's chief economist, said mortgage interest rates are still fairly low. "Fixed mortgage interest rates recently were below 6 percent - that is very much the exception to the norm and led to better than expected home sales during the first half of the year, " he said. "We now think the 30-year fixed should stay below 6.5 percent for the balance of 2003, and that's still very favorable when you look at where rates have been over the last four decades. Home sales in the second half of the year won't be as robust, but we'll still see an annual record." Lereah said the national median existing-home price should continue to rise above historic norms, increasing 5.9 percent in 2003 to $167,600, while the median new-home price should rise 3.2 percent to $193,600. DRUGS FOR SENIORS
Arizona - About 3 weeks ago there was an article in this publication about Governor Janet Napolitano's Pharmacy Discount Program. We finally got the information. Since June 1, over 11,000 people have enrolled, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars. This optional program is available to all Medicare-eligible citizens and is intended to save additional money for those who have no prescription drug insurance coverage or those who do not participate in other discount programs. To inquire or enroll, call (800) 770-8014 or go to http://rxamerica.com. For only $9.95 per year, the program provides significant discounts on prescription drugs at over 400 pharmacies across Arizona for seniors and disabled Arizona residents covered by Medicare.

DRUG PROGRAMS
Arizona - Stay Put and Save - You don't have to cross the border to save money on prescription drugs, especially if your income is limited. Here are some discount and assistance programs for which you might qualify:
* In June 2002, seven drug companies created Together Rx, a program that otters discounts on prescription drugs to Medicare enrollees who lack public or private prescription drug coverage, and who have incomes below $28,000 ($38,000 for couples). The discounts range from 20 to 40 percent or more ott normal prices for drugs manufactured by Abbott Laboratories, AstraZeneca, Aventis Pharmaceuticals, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, and Novartis. For more information, call 800-865-7211 or visit www.togetherrx.com.
* Medicare enrollees with no drug coverage who earn less than $18,000 , ($24,000 per couple) may be eligible for the Pfizer for Living Share Card program. The cost, for most Pfizer drugs, is a flat fee of $15 for a 30-day supply. For information, call 800-717-6005 or visit www.pfizerforliving.com.
* Eli Lilly runs a similar program. Lilly Answers offers its medications for a $12 flat fee for a one-month supply. Eligibility requirements are similar to the Pfizer program. For more information, call 877-795-4559 or visit www.lillyanswers.com.
* For a state-by-state list of pharmacy assistance programs, go to www.aarp1.org/bulletin and look under "exclusive Web resources."
* If you are enrolled in any of AARP's health insurance plans, you have free access to the organization's Prescription Savings Service, which otters discounts on prescription medicines through the mail or at many retail pharmacies. If you don't have an AARP- sponsored insurance policy, you can pay $19.95 a year for an identical service called MembeRx Choice. For more information, call 800-456-2277 or visit www.aarppharmacy.com.

RED PLANET SPECTACULAR
Earth/Mars - This month Earth is catching up with Mars, an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years but it may be as long as 60,000 years.
The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 35 million miles and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.
Mars will be easy to spot. Right now Mars rises in the east at 10 p.m. and reachs its azimuth at about 3 a.m. But by the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 a.m. No one alive today will ever see this again.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
G.S. - There has been great response to the articles about Neighborhood Watch. We now have a good list of people that intend to participate. A meeting date will be set soon. If you are interested and haven't already called, please call 768-1400 or email ys@goldenshores.net. Watch here for details.

FOOD SHARE COMING
G.S. - Food Share, which was shut down the end of June, is likely to make a comeback. The men of the local Baptist Church are working on a program, but we recently learned that Alberta Thrasher, local director of Food Care, is working hard to find a driver and a truck to go to Phoenix and pick up the food from St. Mary's Foodbank. The reason Food Care shut down is because St. Mary's will no longer deliver to this area. So hopefully in September there will be food again for those who need it and want it. Watch here for details.

MEDICAL RESEARCH
Go With the Grain - How's this for a healthy breakfast: Harvard researchers found that men over 40 who ate more than one serving of whole-grain cereals a day had a 17 % lower risk of death from any cause. And 20% lower risk of heart disease, than men who rarely ate them. Check for labels that 1. list bran or whole wheat, rice, or oats as a first ingredient, and 2. pack at least 2 grams of fiber per serving.
GUM CONTROL
Studies have linked gum disease to higher rates of heart disease and stroke. Now you can add cancer to the reasons to brush and floss. Researchers at the Univ of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine found that people with gum disease were nearly twice as likely to have pre-cancerous lesions in their mouths - and four times as likely to suffer from oral cancer -- as those with healthy gums.
PREVENT DIABETES
Changing your couch-potato ways, even slightly, can reduce your diabetes risk. In a recent study, researchers found that sedentary middle-aged subjects who engaged in modest exercise (30 minutes of moderate to brisk walking, 3-7 days a week, showed improvements in insulin sensitivity after six months. Such improvements help combat insulin resistance syndrome, a condition that puts you on the path to full-blown type 2 diabetes.

    Weekly Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, We need to know who we are in You. Help us to realize that truth. Let us get it down into our hearts so the enemy cannot steal it away from us. God we fill our lives with "things" looking to satisfy a craving only You can fill, not recognizing the hunger. You said if we hunger and thirst after righteousness we shall be filled. You said we are Your righteousness in Christ Jesus. Teach us how to be complete in Him.
We pray and ask these things in the Name of Jesus. Amen
