RESIDENT ROLLS CAR

G.S. - At around noon on Tuesday a reportedly elderly man, in attempt to negotiate a curve about 3 miles north of Golden Shores, hit gravel and went flying across the road, rolling the vehicle. The vehicle had Nevada license plates, but it is not known if the man was a resident or a visitor to Golden Shores. The fire department responded to the scene, but the man did not desire to be taken for medical treatment and signed a release. It is known that a G.S. resident arrived at the scene and took the man away. The sheriff's deputy remaining at the scene, waiting for the tow truck, said he knew nothing about the accident.

FIRE ON TONOPAH St.
G.S. - Last Friday, the 15th, the fire department responded to a house fire call on Tonopah. Debbie Muston of the fire department reported that they got there quick enough to get the fire put out before any major damage was done. The fire is believed to be an electrical fire but not caused by an appliance. The cause is still under investigation. The residents are still living in the home.

FIRE HAZZARDS IN G.S.
G.S. - Debbie Muston, of the Golden Shores Fire Department, said the fire department would like to see people keep their yards free of trash and keep their storage units cleaned out. But especially dead trees, and even more so if the trees are in the power lines. This type of dead foilage can ignite so quickly in the dryness and heat like we are experiencing this summer and can spread so quickly to ignite home fires. Even though it is too hot to work in the yard thru the day for most people, we need to spend a little time tidying up our places to prevent a major disaster.

SCAMS MAKING THE ROUNDS
Mohave County - The Bullhead City Police Department is warning area residents about a new credit card scam. Lt. Steve Smith says it involves the internet and your e-mail. "Criminals are currently using the Fethard.biz site and they're e-mailing citizens a notice of unlawful activity on the citizens credit account and request their credit card number and expiration. Our message is the public should not offer any personal information to any person or organization that not known to them." Lt. Smith also warns against calling the number given in the message since it is a phone number in the South American country of Uruguay.
Also, the Mohave County Sheriff's Department has issued a SCAM ALERT. They have received a number of calls from concerned area residents after receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be with the Mohave Area General Narcotics Enforcement Team (MAGNET) soliciting operating funds. This call is a hoax, as no law enforcement agency will ever call soliciting operating funds. Anyone who has received this call or one similar is asked to contact the Mohave County Sheriff's Office at (928) 758-0700.

AVI HONORED FOR BLOOD DRIVE
Avi Casino - The Avi Casino was honored by United Blood Services Wednesday, for setting the casino record of 101 units of blood donation in a single day. And general manager Les Claybir says he's certain the Avi break its own record next year. "We've already, I think, pretty much settled on that. Our staff really gets behind this, they really believe in it, and we really don't have to coerce anybody, they just do it very willingly. So we're confident we're going to do it again," he said. UBS spokes person Kase Martens presented the Avi with a plaque and announced the next area blood drive would be at Needles High School on September 8.

RAIN BYPASSES G.S.
Tri-State - Most of us watched yesterday as the rain storm bypassed Golden Shores to the southwest, yet dumped a lot of rain in Needles. Another flash flood watch is in effect today until 9 p.m. in Clark, Mohave and San Bernardino Counties. The National Weather Service reports a moist and unstable air mass moving over the Mojave Desert today and any thunderstorms that occur are likely to produce heavy rains. A flash flood watch means flooding is possible, though not imminent. However hikers should avoid dry wash beds and narrow canyons, where flooding can start without warning, and motorists should avoid crossing rushing water.

Beth Bresnahan/RISMEDIA, August 18-Though it was still unclear Friday what caused Thursday's massive power failure, the many hours of having no power (including air conditioning) has left many Americans thinking about energy efficiency. The failure--which affected some 50 million people in the US and Canada --was the biggest in US history.... In recent years, improvements have been made in shell construction, as well as better insulation and improved windows-making homes more efficient in the winter and the summer, Wiehagen says. In air conditioners alone, the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating of most units is now 12. The rating was 10 not too long ago. Homeowners are becoming more knowledgeable about windows, insulation, and heating and cooling efficiency.Having shade trees around a house would lessen the need for AC.

MURDER'S SENTENCE IN LIMBO
Mohave County - This story might be of interest to a number of people in Golden Shores. Local resident, Pearl Ritter, writes, "regarding the murder of my sister and her husband in 1994. Two years ago, we went through the trial here, and after a week they found him guilty......amazingly the verdict came on my sister's birthday....Oct.26. We had to go through a new trial due to the fact that last July, the Supreme Court decided that a judge can't sentence anyone....only a jury could....so his attorneys made sure to keep holding sentencing up until after July of last year........so that is why the new trial. The trial was all last week, and Friday night the prosecutor called me to say they came back as a hung jury. The man has been in the Kingman jail for the past 4 years, though he recieved the death sentence in 1996 in Missouri. This is all due to the process of law. Now they will send him back to MO. (not being sentenced AT ALL for the murder of my sister and her husband) to await execution, which may not happen due to the fact he still has about 5 federal appeals available. He has exhausted all his state appeals. If the death sentence is overturned he will be sent to a mental institution. Where is justice? Surely not in our time. Just thought you would like to know, as quite a few of you here have been keeping up on this crime."
From the Kingman Daily Miner. When it came down to the decision of life or death, a Mohave County jury couldn’t agree. The sentencing trial of convicted murder Allen Lee Nicklasson resulted Friday in a hung jury, according to Anji Giovanardi, assistant to Judge James Chavez. During the four-day trial, the jury weighed aggravating and mitigating factors in the shooting deaths of a Kingman couple nine years ago. Nicklasson was tried and convicted in October 2001 on two counts of first-degree murder, first-degree burglary and theft for murdering Joseph and Charlene Babcock in 1994. Nicklasson is already on death row in Missouri for the murder of an ATT employee, Richard Drummond then stealing his car in that state.
On Wednesday Deputy Mohave County Attorney Matt Smith argued for the death penalty saying aggravating factors include the fact that Nicklasson was already convicted of Drummond's murder and the Babcock killings were multiple murders.
In his closing statements, Smith told the jury to weight the fact that three innocent people who only helped Nicklasson and Skillicorn were murdered needlessly. Smith reminded the jury how deliberate and cold-blooded the murders were. How Nicklasson took the time to load the gun and shoot the three victims each time in the head. The two suspects then went back to Babcock's residence where Nicklasson shot Charlene Babcock once. The Babcocks’ bodies were found the next day by a neighbor.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
G.S. - There has been great response to the articles about Neighborhood Watch. We now have a good list of people that intend to participate. A meeting date will be set soon. If you are interested and haven't already called, please call 768-1400 or email ys@goldenshores.net. Watch here for details.

FOOD SHARE COMING
G.S. - Food Share, which was shut down the end of June, is likely to make a comeback. The men of the local Baptist Church are working on a program, but we recently learned that Alberta Thrasher, local director of Food Care, is working hard to find a driver and a truck to go to Phoenix and pick up the food from St. Mary's Foodbank. The reason Food Care shut down is because St. Mary's will no longer deliver to this area. So hopefully in September there will be food again for those who need it and want it. Watch here for details.

    Weekly Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, We know when we pray that You hear us and if You hear then You have already answered. Now cause us to be sensitive to Your Voice. We have crushed it down and tried to twist it to suit our will but Your Word says You have a plan that even when we scheme and plot and make our designs, it is YOU who makes the decision. Lord, teach us to yield our will and our bodies to You knowing You have a better way and we thank You for it!
We pray and ask these things in the Name of Jesus. Amen
