FIRE BURNS 130+ ACRES
 Mohave Valley -
This picture was taken at 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday before any fire
units arrived at the scene and only about 5 minutes after it
started. Flames were already 40-50 feet high. Believed to be arson,
the fire burned over 130 acres before it was contained. In addition
to several fire departments, the Red Cross from Flagstaff and Mohave
Valley C.E.R.T. groups were called in for assistance. A
representative of Mohave Valley C.E.R.T. spoke at the Golden Shores
C.E.R.T. meeting at the G.S. Fire Department on Wednesday evening
and said they assisted with traffic, evacuations, food and water,
shelter, and transportation during the approximate 12 hours it took
to contain the fire. High winds helped the fire grow rapidly,
forcing residents of 80 homes to evacuate to Mohave Valley
Elementary School. Livestock was cared for as well. A local
resident on Evans Rd, John Bacot, said when they were evacuating the
area, he was behind the barn watching the fire and that's why they
couldn't find him. He said he was watching the stack of 1000 pound
bails of hay just across the road from the fire, the only place the
fire jumped the road. Some sparks ignited the hay and "made some
really pretty flames", said Bacot. It was the second fire on
Fort Mohave Tribal land Tuesday, however the first was a a
controlled agricultural burn just south of the Avi Resort and
Casino. Crews are expected to remain on scene through at least
today. Residents have begun returning to their homes, though some
will be without power as the fire knocked out a few utility poles.

FRIEND OF LOCAL RESIDENT WINS $1
MILLION SWEEPS G.S. - A friend of local resident of Golden
Shores, Eva Chisolm, recently won the $1 million sweepstakes from
Publisher's Clearing House. Machala Cristler, 73 of Rialto CA, had
only $4 left in her checking account. That morning she had to borrow
$20 from her daughter for some groceries. Eva said she had only been
a pen pal of Cristler for about 3 months, but through their
correspondence Cristler said her rent had been increased by $40 per
month and she didn't know what she was going to do. Then they came
to her house. "I just can't believe it" she said. She needs to buy
some medications and plans to feel better. She said she is a
christian and will give 10% to her church, buy some furniture and
share the rest with her family.

NEWS OFFICE CLOSED
G.S. - The NEWS office, across from the post
office, has closed. The editor, that's me, has moved back home. My
phone is now working again - Yeah! 768-1400 THIS E-NEWS WILL
CONTINUE! The response I've had to this publication, since it
started back in February, has been tremendous, even since I moved
back home. So keep reading, keep forwarding this to your friends
and relatives, and keep advertising. As soon as I can afford a nice
big color laser printer you will see a nice Golden Shores newspaper
in print. Thanks to all of you. Yancey Sexton
MORE TELEPHONE SCAMS
Mohave County - Law enforcement is warning
area residents of more possible scams. The first has a caller
allegedly representing Capital Bank and Trust. Their line is that if
your bank account is in good standing you will receive $400.00 worth
of free travel vouchers. Then they ask for the name of the bank and
the account number. The second one was a flyer that represented
"American Sweepstakes Publishers" indicating that if $12 was sent to
a Post Office Box in Kansas that a large cash prize would be made
available to them. Law enforcement reminds everyone DO NOT give out
personal information to any stranger and no legitimate prize would
require a payment in order to claim it. The third was a resident
received a telephone call from a male subject stating he was with a
"Legal Assistance Program" that was soliciting money for a "police
officer fund". When the male subject was asked for a return
telephone number, he stated that he did not have one and
disconnected the call. The sheriff's office recommends you ask
the solicitor to mail you information or ask for a telephone number
to call them back, if it is a legitimate business, they will
understand. If you suspect fraud, contact your local law enforcement
office.
AIR SERVICE DOOMED
Lake Havasu City - Last week City Council voted
to eliminate one of the grant funded flights, after learning that
the Ontario flight wasn't receiving much interest. Councilman Ron
Gould is not surprised that the airline didn't do more to try to
gain passengers on the flight. The company apparently has no
motivation to provide good service and to put people on their
airline because they’re getting paid whether anyone is on there or
not. Some advertising was done, but those ads were provided by the
city as part of the grant. This paper tried to get them to
advertise, but they did not return phone calls or email. Meanwhile a
Mesa Air official, while not commenting on why the company relied
solely on city-funded advertising and not only did none for itself,
but doesn't even list Lake Havasu City service on its web page, said
the focus is on the remaining service. "We pretty much knew that
Phoenix was going to work from day one," said Mesa Air's Kendrick
Bates. "The focus right now is to continue to build the Phoenix
service, as soon as the Phoenix service is self sufficient, we'll
entertain other points of interest." Mr. Bates said one popular
route that may be considered in the future would be Havasu to Las
Vegas.

NEW SHERRIF'S OFFICE NEARS
COMPLETION Kingman - The new Mohave County Sheriff's main
office fired up their new dispatch center on Thursday morning. So
the dispatch and 9-1-1 center is operating from the new building.
Over the next three weeks or so they plan on moving the rest of the
Sheriff's office into the new building. Sheriff Tom Sheehan said,
"We still have a few final touches to complete, hopefully by the end
of this month or the first week of this month." The facility is
state of the art and Sheriff Tom Sheehan said he is especially
excited. "Working out of building that was built in 1922, that is
just about 60 percent condemned, has been very difficult for many of
the employees, including myself. It's a tremendous building, its
about 31,000 square feet. It's going to more than triple the
capacity of office space and services that we can perform than our
old building," he said. "It's going to make a world of difference
for many different facets of the sheriffs office."
COMMODITIES CUT SHORT

Mohave Valley - The
monthly commodity dispursement for September was really short with
only 6 cans, 1 bag of rice and 1 bag of macaroni. They usually have
over 120 people to show up and only enough food for about 60 people.
When the ration is this short, a lot of people go away very
disappointed. This is one of the reasons the men of Golden Shores
Community Baptist Church are planning to start a Food Share program.
Since the previous Food Share program was shut down in June, people
who need food are having to resort to other means. The church's food
share program will provide around $50-60 worth of food for less than
$20 and each person can buy up to 3 boxes. A final decision will be
made by the men at the October meeting and possibly start in
November. Watch here for details.
MEETING
CANCELLED NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH G.S. - Due to some unforseen circumstances, the
Neighborhood Watch Meeting scheduled for today, September 18, has
been cancelled. We will try again in October. Watch here for further
details. For more information, please call 768-1400 or email ys@goldenshores.net.
