COUNTY CHECKING MOSQUITOS
Mohave County - The Mohave County Department of Health reports that with the recent decrease in outside temperatures, mosquito populations are growing. Currently the Health Department is involved in trapping mosquitoes in order to be tested for West Nile Virus. During the recent trappings, an increased number of overall mosquitoes have been found. The Health Department reminds everyone that no traces of West Nile Virus have yet been found in the county, but the increase in activity warrants extra precautions like using bug repellant to prevent other diseases that mosquitoes might carry.

NAR Hails House Passage Of American Dream Downpayment Act

Consumer Motivation For Moving
by Dirk Zeller
Consumers are beginning to change their views in regard to moving. The motivation for consumers to move is shifting from the financial to the needs of the consumer. A significant segment of the population have moved, in the last 12 months, to take advantage of the low interest rates that have been available. These consumers have moved to achieve a higher quality of life without the higher monthly payment that usually accompanies it. They move because it makes financial sense to do so.
25% of Americans in the market for a new home cite a life change as the reason for their move. The consumers are citing retirement location, new baby, divorce or a new job as their primary motivation for moving.
Cost Estimate Glossary: "Insurance Impounds" An amount required by lender to be collected at cost on an assumption of existing can usually 2.5 months of yearly premium.

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
 National - Preventing Breast Cancer
Part II: Diet
Last Week's Tip discussed lifestyle changes that may help lower the risk of breast cancer. Today's Tip covers diet and nutrition and how they can affect your breast cancer risk. Try incorporating the following into your diet and life:
Keep your fat content low. Below 25 percent of your daily calories is ideal.
Avoid animal fats, polyunsaturates (many vegetable oils) and hydrogenated oils (margarines and vegetable shortenings) - all can increase cancer risks.
Use healthy fats: monounsaturates such as olive oil, and freshly-ground flaxseed and fish such as salmon and sardines (which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids) may reduce your risk of breast cancer.
Include soy products in your diet. Tofu, tempeh and miso provide weak, plant-based estrogens which may lower your breast cancer risk.
Eat cabbage and cruciferous vegetables. Broccoli, kale and collard greens may help block estrogen from other sources, such as environmental pollutants.
Avoid alcohol. It can increase your breast-cancer risk by increasing estrogen levels.
Minimize your consumption of ordinary meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products. Replace with organic, hormone-free versions, or cut way down on animal foods.
Eat more fruits and vegetables! They contain many different cancer-protective phytochemicals.

CHURCHES UPSET WITH GAY PRIDE FESTIVAL
Lake Havasu City - Some local religious leaders have expressed concern over a gay pride convention that is planned to take place in LHC. "If we allow this to take place in our city, we are going to see some changes that most people in this city aren't going to appreciate," said Reverend Ted Matyja, "not the type of an atmosphere that I want my children or my grandchildren to possibly see, parading up and down possibly the streets of Lake Havasu and our community."
The River Rainbow Group is planning on holding the festival November 7-9 at the Nautical Inn Convention Center, and an itinerary doesn't mention any venues outside of the resort. But Rev. Matyja said that the event could still have an adverse effect outside the convention center.
"Even if they all were to stay within the convention confines, it's just the start of what I feel is going to spread further," he said. "I feel it's my God-given right, my constitutional right to share what I oppose, and I oppose this happening in Lake Havasu City." The president of the River Rainbow Group declined to comment on the concerns raised by Reverend Matyja and others in the community.

NOT ENOUGH RAIN
Tri-State - While our area is reporting higher than average rainfall this year, the National Weather Service is saying that is not enough to end the drought the region has suffered for the past four years.
"Even if we get above normal snow pack this winter, which we don’t expect, it will take a couple of years at least," said Charlie Schlott, a forecaster with the National Weather Service. Mr. Schlott said that his agency is anticipating a warm, dry winter. Even though we have received around 4 inches of rain this year, well over last year’s total of 1.3 inches, we are still also above our yearly average of 3.8 inches.
While we have received more rain that normal, the average temperature was consistent with last year. September’s average high was 104, which is the close to last year, and slightly cooler than 2001. The average in 2001 was 106 degrees.

NEW SHERIFF'S OFFICE OPENS
Kingman - The new Mohave County Sheriff's Office, located at 600 West Beale Street, will be open for business Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at 8:00 AM. Moving of records and personnel will continue through the week but the majority of personnel will be working in the new facility beginning on Wednesday. The old facility at 301 West Beale Street will no longer be in use. Sheriff Tom Sheahan is planning an open house and dedication which will be announced in the near future.
