BIG TURNOUT FOR FLU SHOTS

G.S. - On Monday 10-20 there was a big crowd at the Golden Shores Fire Department. With the outbreak of influenza already spreading thru the southwest, people need their flu shots. Fire department personel said over 400 people showed up to get their annual flu and pneumonia shots. Many people stood in line for as long as an hour and a half, but it's suppose to be worth it all because the strains of flu that are going around this year are pretty bad, according to the health department. So if you missed yours and if you are at any sort of risk, maybe you should check into getting a flu shot.

BUGS ON THE INCREASE
Mohave County - Pest control experts are warning Mohave County area residents to be on the lookout for scorpions. Donna Ellsworth of Eliminator Pest Control, which services the entire Mohave County area, said the desert dwellers are becoming more prevalent in residential areas. "There seems to be a migration at the moment, because we are having here on the river, as well as up in Needles, we’re getting a lot of calls for scorpions." Mrs. Ellsworth said part of the reason for the increase in scorpions is the higher population of one of their prime food sources, crickets. Increased construction and the wet monsoon season has also created a large migration of the hopping insect. Adult scorpions generally do not release all of their venom on one victim. However, younger ones often do. Doctors urge sting victims to seek medical attention to be safe.

10 biggest home-buying mistakes
By Pat Curry, Bankrate.com
1. Not doing your homework. Knowledge is power. Tremendous information is available on the Internet. There is no excuse for entering the market unprepared.
2.Trying to make a shrewd investment. People need to buy based on what fits their family. Don't try to guess what will happen to the market.
3.Choosing a poor location. Even within a neighborhood, location matters. Is it on the busiest street? Is there a shopping center out the back window?
4.Overlooking an inferior floor plan for an attractive exterior. It may have gorgeous curb appeal, but you don't live on the lawn. No matter how attractive the exterior, you need a livable home.
5.Overlooking how the house will function for your family. How do you really live? Do you really need a formal dining room and living room? Would you be happier with an eat-in kitchen and a great room and aa den to use as a home office? The house only needs to fit one family -- yours.
6.Not having the home properly inspected in a resale. This is not the time for surprises. Get an inspection from a qualified, respected professional.
7.Not checking out the builder's reputation on a new home. Talk to three or four people who live in the builder's homes and see what they have to say. If one builder did all the houses in a neighborhood, talk to the residents and get their input. (It's also a great way to see what your neighbors would be like.)
8.Not getting what you want because you're impatient. This is a big decision. You need time. Impatient decisions can lead to mistakes.
9.Waiting for a better market and interest rates. Warren Buffett says the rear view mirror is always clearer than the windshield.
10.Not buying at all. If you can afford a home and you don't make that purchase, you'll lose the benefit of tax deductions, building home equity and the appreciation.
Becky welcomes your questions and comments.

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
 National - Preventing Breast Cancer
Part III
Knowing the Signs and Risks
According to the National Cancer Institute, breast cancer in women is second only to skin cancer. It is important to know if you are at risk. Personal and family histories of breast cancer, certain breast changes, and certain genes can all affect breast-cancer risk. Talk to your doctor about your specific situation.
It is important to know the signs of breast cancer: early detection is key to treatment and recovery. Performing a monthly self-examination is important, as is an exam performed by your doctor. In addition, the National Cancer Institute suggests keeping an eye out for the following signs:
A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area.
A change in the size or shape of the breast.
Nipple discharge or tenderness.
An inverted nipple.
Ridges or pitting on the breast (resembling an orange peel).
A change in the look or feel of the breast, areola or nipple (such as temperature, swelling, redness or a scaly feel).
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, see your doctor for a diagnosis and possible treatment. If you are over 40, mammograms are suggested annually.

STUDENTS WIN MEDALS
Topock School - The Topock Cross Country Team traveled to Laughlin on Saturday September 27 to run the 1.5 mile course located at Mountain View Park.
The young Hawks 1st outing of the season was a successful one as first year runners Scotty Walker and Tess Berryman, both 7th graders, earned medals in their first ever competition. Tess and Scotty ran very well and will only get better as the season progresses, stated coach John Warren. Robbie Ford is only a 6th grader and placed 15th. He has 3 years left and will be a force in the future. Sixth grader Kaylee King ran very well and missed earning a medal by just one place. Seventh grader Jenae Wolf placed 19th and sixth grader Jackie Haidle placed 26th. Rounding out the Hawks is a group of 5th graders. My 5th graders are a great group! I am incredibly pleased with their enthusiasm and dedication. We practice daily at 6AM and they show up everyday bright eyed and ready to go, says Mr. Warren. The 5th grade runners are: Adrienne Sandoval, Samantha Nutting, Kiana McCollum, Amanda Gragg, and Ashley Wardrobe.
In October the Hawks harriers have participated in meets in Lake Havasu, Kingman, and Laughlin. All of our runners have improved as the season has progressed. Tess and Kaylee have beaten each other twice this year providing for some great competition. It’s great because they push each other to perform. They will both be a couple of the premier runners in the county next year, stated Mr. Warren. We only have 2 boys on the team and that’s Scottie and Robbie. Their good citizens, good students, and good athletes. Both of them will also be in the upper echelon of runners next year as well.

NEW BUSINESS IN TOWN
G.S. - The Buck Stops Here is the newest business in town. It is both a dollar store and a variety store. They carry many basic necessities such and milk, bread, detergent, cosmetics, and some basic clothing. Owners Marshall and Jenny said they plan to keep prices lower than anyone else in town as they expand their line of goods. Plus they plan to expand their services to make their store a one-stop quick-stop in Golden Shores. The store is very nice and clean and a pleasure to walk in and look around.

    OPINIONS
    - There is a notice to Postal Patrons that the mail will be in the box at 12 o'clock noon. Last Saturday I went to get my mail at 12:15 and to my surprise I had 2 notices of packages in the box. I then proceeded to the window to pick up the packages and saw another notice that the window was open only from 11 to 12 thus I did not get the packages. Somehow or other I fail to see how I can pick up a package before I get the notice that there is one. Now and then perishable items are sent thru the mail so does the post office then pay for the items that are spoiled? Looks like we need some new rules quite badly. -- Lee Johnson
