FIRE AND SMOKE

Tri-State - It's not often I'll point my camera directly at the sun and take a picture, but Wednesday was the exception. The smoke and clouds became so dense that, at times, the sun couldn't be seen at all. Late Wednesday night the smoke became even more dense as the lights of Needles disappeared. "It's really spooky out here," said a couple of people out walking the streets late at night. (I'm not the only one that walks at night.)
In addition to the smoke, we also were plastered with solar flares yesterday which affected some high-altitude and world-wide communications. It is unknown if any communications were affected in our area.
Then to top it off, Semi Valley, CA got hit with an earthquake. It was only a 3.2, but still happened.

LOCALS LOSE HOMES IN FIRE
California - Many of us here in Golden Shores either have property, homes, relatives and friends living in the fire affected areas of California. Although reluctant to mention names of those who have lost their California homes, but we can say that some of our friends and family that have property and relatives here, like Bob & Peggy Gulley, have migrated here after being evacuated from their homes in California. I'm sure we all join together to welcome those who have sought refuge here and we sympathize with those who have already lost homes, property, and possibly family, in California.

HEALTH OFFICIAL WARN OF SMOKE
Tri-State - Smog-like conditions throughout the Tri-State have citizens concerned about what this is and how long it will last. "That is smoke from the fires off to our west. Winds have come around more to a west, southwesterly direction and allowing smoke to filter into from the west. So we are going to have a problem with smoke from the fires for the next few days I would think," said National Weather Service forecaster Charlie Shlott.
The result is that the air quality in area communities is a concern. "We consider there to be unhealthy smoke levels at this time and health effects from this can be anything from itchy eyes, cough, runny nose, to upper airway irritation. But it can also include other potential symptoms as headache dizziness and leading to asthma, bronchitis and reduced lung function," said Mohave County Health Department director Patty Mead. "So we are asking anybody with medical conditions those include sensitive populations, individuals with asthma and respiratory diseases, individuals with heart disease, the elderly, children, and smokers, need to stay indoors." Marilyn Pollock, ICU Director at Western Arizona Regional Medical Center, echoed that position. "I would encourage someone with respiratory problems to do is to stay inside as much as possible, to stay out of the smoky air. Make sure that they have plenty of their medication, that they're using them properly, as they've been instructed to do."
DON'T FORGET YOUR VITAMINS:
Selenium activates an antioxidant enzyme called glutathione peroxidase, which helps the body rid itself of environmental toxins.
Vitamin C - Higher doses of this antioxidant, greater than 1,000 mg/day, may provide additional protection against the oxidative effects of air pollution.
Tumeric/Circumin - These compounds have demonstrated protective activity from airborne pollutants, especially smoke.

LOCAL JAILED ON DUI
Ft. Mohave - The Mohave County Sheriff's deputies stopped a vehicle after observing erratic driving at Torrance and Highway 95 in Fort Mohave. Joseph James Drake, Jr., 48, of Golden Shores was stopped on Monday (10/22) approximately 10:30 pm. The deputies smelled a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle. Drake was taken into custody after Deputies performed the field sobriety test (FST'S) and portable breath test (PBT) which revealed .168%. While securing the vehicle deputies located a package of hotdogs and a bottle of vitamins which Drake admitted he had shoplifted from a grocery store earlier that evening. The search of the vehicle also discovered an open bottle of alcohol under the driver's seat. Drake's vehicle was towed from the scene. Drake was transported to the Mohave County Sheriff's Office District II Substation Jail where he was cited on charges of DUI, shoplifting and possession of an open container.

Please do not use the old 768 number after November 1st. The local phone number for business and personal calls is still the same 768-4546.

BURGLARY AT SHELL
G.S. - Some people have inquired about the burglary that occurred at the local Shell station earlier this week. We have no knowledge of it except that someone said it took 45 minutes for the sheriff to arrive.

 National - Preventing Breast Cancer
Part IV
Breast Cancer and... Mushrooms?
There are many ways to help lower your risk of breast cancer; one is to incorporate medicinal mushrooms into your diet and health regime. The following four are great choices to add to your meals or supplement with as cancer-preventative measures:
Maitake (Grifola frondosa). This delicious, edible mushroom provides anti-cancer, anti-viral and immune-enhancing properties, and may also reduce blood pressure and blood sugar.
Shiitake (Lentinula edodes). The shiitake has been found to have immune modulating, anti-viral and cholesterol reducing properties. Certain extracts of shiitake mushrooms are used in Japan as adjunctive therapy to strengthen immunity of cancer patients during chemotherapy and radiation.
Agaricus (Agaricus blazei). This medicinal mushroom has anti-tumor and anti-viral activity, and is widely used by cancer patients in Japan and Brazil.
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum). Too woody and bitter to eat as food, reishi mushrooms are available in tea bags, capsules and liquid extracts. Animal studies have shown that reishi improves immune function and inhibits the growth of some malignant tumors. It is also a natural anti-inflammatory agent.

There is a blood shortage in the Tri-state area. WestCare will be there too,” she said. “Their programs are centered around drug and alcohol and the problems associated with their abuse.” There will be food, drink, free giveaways and drawings.
