1 DEAD IN TRUCK CRASH

Needles -
According to California Highway Patrol, at approximately 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon they responded to an accident call at mile 42 on highway 95, about 10 miles south of Needles. The tractor trailer was northbound and drifted into the southbound lane. A pickup truck with a 5th wheel was southbound and turned to the northbound lane in attempt to avoid a collision. The vehicles collided offset and the undercarriage of the large trailer crushed the cab of the pickup truck to headset level which caused the death of one of the Jensens from Idaho. The other Jensen was taken to Needles hospital and condition is unknown at this time. The truck driver reportedly only had minor injuries. The tractor trailer was laying on it's left side on the southbound side of the highway with the cab seemingly quite mangled.

Mohave County Sheriff's Office deputy arrested Thomas Patrick Compte, 39, of Golden Shores, early Friday, 1/16, morning for a misdemeanor warrant for failure to comply with court issued by Lake Havasu City Municipal Court for disorderly conduct. Deputies responded to a disturbance in the 13100 block of Sonita Drive approximately 12:30 am. The roommate reported that Compte became verbally abusive. Compte would not cooperate with the deputies as he kept yelling and talking to himself. A records check showed Compte to have an outstanding warrant. MISS GOLDEN SHORES PAGEANT
G.S. -
The Golden Shores Chamber of Commerce held a reception to introduce the contestants of Miss Golden Shores 2004 Pageant to supporters and guests at the Community Center Jan. 16.
The annual Miss Golden Shores Pageant is this Saturday at the Civic Center. And if you don't have a ticket, you're out of luck. Several people have mentioned that they have tried to purchase a ticket and have been told, "Sorry, we're sold out." The girls and staff have been working hard in preparation for the event. There are six girls contending this year and the pageant should be quite entertaining.
CITY RESIDENTS LEAVING
Colorado City -
"People are beginning to leave. The ones that are leaving and left this weekend are continuing to leave up through last night are in the immediate area around Colorado City in Hurricane and the St. George area. They are staying with families at those locations," said Buster Johnson, R-Dist. 3, who has been a vocal opponent of the alleged abuses of women, children and welfare in the predominantly fundamentalist Mormon community.
Some concerns are being voiced about the exodus however, as there is limited shelter space in the area. "This weekend we had to raise money to basically help get these children back down, because obviously there is no funds available for this. And we got those to Flora (Jessup) who needed the money to make the arrangements," said Supervisor Johnson. He added that Richard Travis has been speaking with Arizona and Utah representatives about the issue and is making progress on setting up a site in Arizona.
Supervisor Johnson said another issue that must be worked out is determining which jurisdiction the minors who flee fall under.

Bush Notes Record Number of Home Owners
RISMEDIA, Jan. 21 - During Tuesday night’s State of the Union Address President George W. Bush highlighted the fact that there has never been a higher number of home owners in the United States than now.
“The pace of economic growth in the third quarter of 2003 was the fastest in nearly 20 years,” Bush told members of Congress. “New home construction: the highest in almost 20 years. Home ownership rates: the highest ever … Interest rates are low. … These numbers confirm that the American people are using their money far better than the government would have -- and you were right to return it.”
Becky welcomes your questions and comments.

PRIVATE PRISON
Phoenix -
A private prison in Mohave County was the bargaining chip between Legislative Republicans and democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano in the previous special session. With the '04 regular session just underway, Gov. Napolitano says no more haggling.
"I have told Sen. (Linda) Binder, R-Lake Havasu City, and I've told other members of the delegation from the Kingman area, that it is my intent to get that prison up and running and operational by May," she said.
Gov. Napolitano cited delays in financing by the prison developer as the latest stumbling block, but that's expected to be worked through this month. The company was seeking financing in December, a month where financing options are limited.
PRO-LIFE TAKES BIG STEPS
Phoenix -
Cathi Herrod of CAP arranged testimony from Dr. William Chavira in support of the women’s right to know (informed consent) bill on abortion, SB 1077, and we are excited to announce that it passed the Senate Judiciary Committee by a 7-2 vote! As with most of the pro-family, pro-life ideas we support, this bill had bipartisan support and bipartisan opposition, four Republicans and three Democrats in favor, one Republican and one Democrat against. Now is the time to let your senator know you support giving women information about abortion before they undergo the procedure! Go to our website at www.azpolicy.org to gain easy access to information about your state senator, then call or send an email to your senator in support of SB 1077.
PRESIDENT DEFENDS MARRIAGE
National -
This week's State of the Union address by President Bush marked what may be
the watershed moment in our effort to Save Marriage.
During his address, President Bush placed the marriage issue squarely
on the front-burner of this year's legislative agenda. Here is what the
President said:
"If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only
alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our
Nation must defend the sanctity of marriage."

'BAGEL' WORM SPREADING
National -
A new Windows worm discovered Sunday is spreading rapidly, according to security experts and anti-virus firms.
According to Ken Dunham, Director of Malicious Code for iDEFENSE Inc., more than 50,000 interceptions of the worm—known both as Bagel.A and Beagle.A have already been noted by security firms. "Bagel started gaining significant ground in the wild as the work week resumed in Asia. Bagel appears to have gained the most ground initially in Europe, where it was first detected with the greatest prevalence." The worm is now taking its place in the U.S. The worm arrives as an executable attachment to an e-mail message. Just be sure your antivirus programs are up-to-date and delete any unknown emails.

JAIL DISTURBANCE QUELLED
Mohave County -
Early Saturday evening 1/17 a Mohave County Jail inmate was assaulted in a cell area known as B pod. Correction Officers directed the cell area to lock down in individual cells so they could investigate the assault. The inmates refused to comply with the directive and damaged a cleaning cart and dumped cleaning supplies. The inmates voluntarily locked down when Correction Officers entered the cell area assisted by the Sheriff's Deputies and Kingman Police Officers. The inmate Robert R Matthews, 27, of Bullhead City who was incarcerated for aggravated assault charges was treated by jail medical staff for abrasions. Matthews posted bond January 18th and was released from custody. The assault is under investigation.

Now you also have the option of having a banner ad put on the page for only $50.00 per year which includes a link. To have your business listed on the website is free, but we will cover our costs with Links. Give your business some class. If you do not have a website for your business, website design and webspace is very reasonable. Call 768-1400 or email ys@goldenshores.net. We are always open to suggestions.
