HOUSE BURNS - TOTAL LOSS

G.S. -
The Golden Shores Fire Department received a call shortly after 2:00 p.m. on Thursday that a vehicle was on fire under a carport at the Dillon residence on Shore drive and called an urgent message, several times, for firemen on the fire department radio channel. By the time fire trucks were on the scene, the house had caught fire and within 5 minutes the entire house was on engulfed. Mohave Valley Fire Department was called for an extra pumper and the fire was under control within about 20 minutes. Prior to Mohave Valley's arrival, the Golden Shores Firemen did a great job of preventing the spread of the fire to the house next door. Fortunately there was no one in the house and no physical injuries were reported. Several loud explosions were heard during the fire. Several observers watched as the power lines burned and fell from the power pole next to the house. Utility companies were called to the scene to secure the utilities. U.S. Government fire officials were also on the scene. To see more pictures of this fire Click Here.

HOLIDAY ROLLOVER

G.S. -
President's Day was not a good day for local resident Gary Ramer. He said, "I was not in a hurry. I got to the stop sign, I looked both ways, then started across the highway and suddenly, there she was. So I hit the accelerator and attempted to get out of the way and was hit anyway." The accident happened at the main intersection in town, between the Shell and Western Trader. Ramer said the lady in the white Cadillac hit the left rear bumber of his small white truck. He spun around a couple of times and then rolled over on the side. Ramer said he could have climbed out the door of the driver side, but they cut the windshield out anyway, probably in case of fire. There did not appear to be any skid marks on the highway from the Cadillac attempting to slow down, but Ramer is still considered to be at fault. Ramer and the two occupants of the car were taken to Needles hospital and treated and released.

RUNAWAYS RUN AGAIN
COLORADO CITY -
Two minor girls that ran away from the polygamous community have run away again, this time from the agencies that were supposed to be helping them. Fawn Holm and Fawn Broadbent both ran from protective custody, leaving notes that said they were afraid Child Protective Services would send the pair back to Colorado City.
Mohave County Supervisor Buster Johnson said he's sad that the girls felt the need to run away again. And he said he's disappointed in a state bureaucracy that would consider returning the girls to the polygamous community.
EFFORTS OF SHERIFF PRAISED
COLORADO CITY -
Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard said cooperative efforts with the many agencies that have jurisdictional interests in Colorado City is the key to rooting out the problems. "We are working very closely with the new Mohave County Attorney and Sheriff (Tom) Sheahan who have been very helpful and cooperative. They are the primary law enforcement experts up there and we have to depend on their expertise," said Goddard.
Colorado City sits on the border of Arizona and Utah and a single road separates the community from Hildale, Utah, which shares not only the polygamous lifestyle of the Fundamentalist Mormon Church, but many community services and utilities. Goddard said that his office and the MCSO have been coordinating activity with Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff and the Washington Country Sheriff's Office to tackle the issues of alleged abuse of women and children, as well as possible welfare fraud.

SEARCH AND RESCUE ACADEMY

Kingman -
The Mohave County Sheriff's Search and Rescue staff conducted a 2-day Search and Rescue basic academy on February 13-14, 2004, in Kingman. Sgt. Mike Friend and Deputy John Slaughter conducted the academy with the assistance of Bill Weaver, a command unit volunteer.
Volunteer's attended from the surrounding areas of Lake Havasu City, Bullhead City and Kingman. The academy training included classroom material and outdoor exercises. To participate with Search and Rescue assignments volunteers must first attend the academy.
"During a search and rescue operation, we want our volunteer's to assist in the solution rather than become part of the problem, therefore it is a requirement for volunteer's to attend the academy," Sgt. Mike Friend said.
Attendees of the Search and Rescue academy are participating in an outdoor exercise directed by Allen Pampa (kneeling - front left) and Sean Borland (kneeling - front right) from the Search and Rescue Bullhead City Unit.

VFW PANCAKE FUND RAISER
G.S. -
A free pancake breakfast was served Sat. Feb. 14. Pancakes, bacon or sausage and coffee were served at no charge. There was a request for donations for the Mohave Desert Veterans Memorial. A red wheelbarrow was stationed near the door to receive donations.
Over 100 pancake breakfasts were served to more than 100 people. The breakfast, proceeds from the big burger lunch and beverages from the canteen brought in $1,170 for the memorial. Memorial Chairman Hollis Wolfe was pleased with the response from the community.
Forms for additional concrete sidewalks are ready to be filled. A cement truck is expected to arrive on Sat. As Hollis says, "The monument will be built as fast as donations come in." Most of the labor is done by volunteers from the VFW post and members of the community.

INFORMED CONSENT PASSES SENATE!
Phoenix -
Thursday the Senate passed our informed consent bill on abortion (SB1077) by an 18-11 vote! This is a miraculous turnaround from one year ago, when the bill died in the Senate after several Democrats succumbed to the pressure from Gov. Napolitano to vote against something they really supported. When that happened, we urged many of you to let them know of your disappointment, and partly as a result of that outrage from their districts they voted “yes” today, despite enormous pressure!
THE PASSION
Mel Gibson's movie, "The Passion of the Christ," will open nationwide on Wednesday, February 25.

On Saturday, February 21, from noon until 4 p.m. in Bullhead City the the give-away will be taking place at the Super Wal-Mart.
The gun locks are being funded by a state grant, which in turn is being funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.
WEBSITE TEMP OFFLINE

NEW INTERNET SERVICES
G.S. -
We now have internet dialup service numbers available for ISPs such as Earthlink, Free4life, AOL (which I hope no one uses), and several other national ISPs (Internet Service Providers) with prices ranging from $9.95 to $24.95 per mo depending on what kind of service you want. Earthlink and Free4life are the only ones offering the HighSpeed dialup at this time. NetZero and Juno have not yet come online, but I'm sure they will shortly. DSL is not yet available thru anyone other than Frontier, but that is also coming soon. The dialup numbers are not yet being shown on some of the ISPs websites for the 768-788 prefixes, but if you look at the listings for the state, you see Lake Havasu City with 208 dialing prefixes and those are local numbers for 768-788 prefixes. If you type Access Numbers in a search engine like Google, you'll find several ISPs that already have the Lake Havasu City 208 numbers, and more will be coming online in the near future.
If you call the phone company, they will tell you the 208 numbers are invalid. If you call the ISPs, they will tell you they don't have service for 768-788, BUT THEY DO! Some people in town are already using the 208 numbers.
Earthlink is currently running a special to get people started with their high speed dialup at $10.97 per month for the first 6 months. Click Here for information.

Now you also have the option of having a banner ad put on the page for only $50.00 per year which includes a link. To have your business listed on the website is free, but we will cover our costs with Links. Give your business some class. If you do not have a website for your business, website design and webspace is very reasonable. Call 768-1400 or email ys@goldenshores.net. We are always open to suggestions.

ON THIS DAY...
Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus was born on this date in 1473. His study of the stars led him to believe that the Earth rotates on it's axis and that the Earth and other planets revolve around the sun.
Just when I was getting used to yesterday, along came today.
