HOUSE BURNS AGAIN

G.S. - Less than six days after the house burned at the corner of Pecos and West, it was set fire again. Saturday evening 3/20 at about 10:00 p.m. the fire department responded to the same house as the past Sunday night/Monday morning. Statements were heard from onlookers and passersby like, "I guess the arsonist didn't finish up the first time, so he came back." Well, it was finished. There's not much left of the house after this fire. Fire department officials went around asking questions of onlookers and area residents. Assistant Fire Chief Debbie Muston said, "We really need your help." If you know anything about anyone related to the fires, please contact the G.S. Fire Department. "You can be kept anonymous," Muston said. It is believed the owners have been contacted. However, they haven't been around much. They do not live in Golden Shores.

The victim reported that her boyfriend, Wilson, had been drinking and became very argumentative. During the argument Wilson grabbed her hair and threatened her and her 10-year-old son. Wilson threw a chair at her son while he was thrashing the house by throwing things around. Deputies contacted Wilson in his vehicle where he admitted to arguing with his girlfriend. A criminal history check showed Wilson to have several previous acts of domestic violence in a 60 month time period. Wilson was transported and booked into the Mohave County jail.

BOAT HITS, SINKS, INJURIES
Topock - Mohave County Sheriff's deputies responded to a boating accident that occurred at Topock Gorge early Saturday 3/21 morning. The accident occurred about 1-2 miles from the Topock Marina at about 12:15 am. According to reports, a flat bottom boat was going down the river when the male subject hit another boat, an open bow day cruiser, which was coming up the river. The flat bottom boat sank while the operator climbed aboard the boat he had struck. Aboard the open bow boat a 15-year-old female was badly injured and was initially taken to the Needles Hospital and was later airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas. The open bow boat has extensive damage.

BOAT+ALCOHOL=ACCIDENT
Lake Havasu - Mohave County Sheriff's deputies cited Crystal Marie Vanillo, 20, of Goleta, California, early Wednesday evening for OUI (operator under the influence) and OUI with blood alcohol concentration over .08%, both misdemeanors. Approximately 5:00 pm deputies responded to a boating accident that occurred on Lake Havasu at the buoy line in Thomson Bay. Deputies determined that a male and a female were sitting on the bow of the boat while it was moving when Vanillo, the operator, let off of the throttle. Therefore the male and female fell overboard in front of the boats path running over the both of them. The female passenger, 20, was critically injured and transported to the Lake Havasu Hospital and was later airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas. Deputies smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Vanillo. A field sobriety test was conducted and an analysis revealed Vanillo's blood concentration to be over .108. Further investigation is pending.

BOAT HITS UNKNOWN OBJECT
Lake Havasu City - Mohave County Sheriff's deputies responded to the Lake Havasu Hospital emergency room approximately 11:15 pm where two people had been involved in a boating accident. James Michael Masters, 42, of Tucson, and Becca Vrabel, 19, of Salt Lake City, reported that they were traveling in a 23 foot Regal from Crazy Horse Beach to a casino when they hit an unknown object in the middle of the lake at about 9:00 pm. Deputies combed the area where the accident occurred and didn't find any debris or what might have caused the accident. Both Masters and Vrabel suffered lacerations to their arms and legs. Vravel did require stitches to her left hand. Both parties were released from the hospital. During conversations Masters and Vrabel admitted to having a few drinks earlier that evening. The boat was impounded pending further investigation.

DEAD BODY IDENTIFIED
Golden Valley - Mohave County Sheriff's Office have identified the body of a man found between Laguna Road and Teddy Roosevelt Road on Jurassic Drive in Golden Valley, on Thursday 3/18 as Stephen Paul Meyer, 54, of Golden Valley. Meyer's body was estimated to have been in the desert for 3-4 days. An autopsy has determined the cause of death as natural causes. Detectives identified the body by using the finger print comparison technique. Originally Meyer's roommate reported him missing on March 21 because she hadn't seen him since the beginning of March.

GOVERNOR MEETS WITH MEXICANS

Phoenix - This Friday 3/26 Governor Janet Napolitano will be spending the day in Nogales and Tucson, meeting with community members to discuss the important issues related to trade and transportation along the border. It is important to Arizona's economy to maintain smooth commercial border crossings in Nogales, so she will be traveling there to mark some important improvements. The governor said, "Little else matters if goods and services cannot actually cross borders."
At the Mariposa border crossing in Nogales, we will kick off a new traffic management system that will improve commercial vehicle operations at the Mariposa port. She also plans to meet with Governor Eduardo Bours, her Sonoran counterpart, to discuss trade and border issues.
President Bush will be in Arizona again this Friday. The governor invited him to join her on this trip to southern Arizona so he could get a firsthand account of international trade on the Arizona border. Unfortunately, the President has declined the invitation with a promise to return. What happens in border communities is vitally important to the economic and social health of the rest of Arizona. A visit from the President would be very helpful, both to those communities and to the White House. "I look forward to the President's return," the governor said.

FORMER COUNTY CLERK GOING TO PRISON
Kingman - The former Mohave County Superior Court Clerk who stole thousands of dollars from the county was not sentenced Friday as scheduled. The hearing was postponed for a couple weeks because of uncertainty related to a previous probation for Cynthia Peterkin. Judge Michael Burke said he’s likely sending Peterkin to prison when sentencing arrives. And for that reason, Judge Burke revoked her probation and ordered that Peterkin be held in Mohave County Jail while awaiting sentencing.

COURT CLOSES WATER ACCESS
Tristate - Persons curious about water levels on Lake Havasu, the Colorado River and other waterways will not be able to find that information on the web anymore. The Bureau of Reclamation, which is a part of the U.S. Department of the Interior, was ordered by the U.S. District Court to shut down their website. Bob Walsh of the Bureau’s Lower Colorado Region that services most of the Tri-State, said what he could about the situation. "I really don’t have a lot. It has to do with a district court order against the Interior Department. I think it has to do with some Indian trust asset issues, but I don’t have any background." Walsh said there are other sources people looking for the information can turn. "They could call here at my office, the same number you called or we do have a river operations center that they could call. And we would be glad to give them the information that we have until we get our site back up." The number to call is (702) 293-8421 or (702)-293-8680.

PHOENIX GIRL KILLED
Parker - The Department of Public Safety reports that a 16-year-old Chandler girl died in an accident while driving from Phoenix to Lake Havasu City for Spring Break. The girl, identified as Ashley Mitchell, apparently died at the scene of massive trauma at milepost 27.5 of State Route 72 Monday evening. Two other girls in the SUV survived the crash.

INCREASE IN AD RATES
G.S. - Advertisement rates are on the increase in Golden Shores. Both The Civic and GSX ad rates are going up April 1st. Ad prices have been so low for so long that it is hard for either paper to make any money, or even break even. The new ad rates are still much lower than any other publication around.
Why does Golden Shores eXtra need advertisers? Well, just like the television you watch, radio you listen to, and newspaper you read, GSX is a valuable free public service that requires the support of our sponsors. Thank you for including our sponsors' advertising as a part of your weekly GSX experience. Call or email about advertising rates: 768-1400 or gsnews@goldenshores.net.

Lake Havasu City - The Bureau of Land Management’s Lake Havasu Field Office has announced that annual recreation permits are available. These permits allow unlimited visits and no daily fees for day-use and overnight camping at the more than 87 shoreline sites on Lake Havasu and day-use sites along the Parker Strip. The cost is $50 and allows the owner plus five additional people to use the sites. For a permit, a map to show where the sites are or more information, call 1-888-213-2582.

CIRCUS COMES TO TOWN
G.S. - The Civic calendar shows March 30th, but all the flyers around town say March 31st. There has been little contact with the management of the circus, so it is being assumed that they will be in town on the date shown on their own flyers and posters, which is March 31st. So if you like a circus, come on out to the Civic Center from 5:00-7:30 p.m. for an evening of fun, and hope its the right day.

TEACHER WINS AWARD
Topock School - A sixth grader, Chris Muehlhausen, nominated his teacher, William "Bill" Acheson for the Phoenix channel 3 - Fulton Homes Silver Apple Award. Channel 3 director of community relations, Marlene Klotz Collins, came to Topock School on Tuesday to present the Silver Apple Award to Acheson. Collins told Muehlhausen the station received 2,000 nominations for the award. Muehlhausen had written, "Mr. Acheson is one of the grreatest teachers in the world." The sixth grader admitted that he had been heading in the wrong direction, but had been turned around and no longer gets suspensions or into fights. Acheson's paid for Muehlhausen to play Pop Warner football and for his equipment. "That helped a lot because my dad is in prison," said Muehlhausen. Muehlhausen made 16 touchdowns and one interception during the Pop Warner season as a running back and linebacker. Acheson received a check for $500. He said the money would go toward helping more students like Muehlhausen. Acheson accepted the Silver Apple award with a smile as he was very happy to have won such an award because of the nomination from Muehlhausen.
