ROLLOVER ON I-40

I-40 Mile 7 - Just before 11:00 p.m. Sunday night 3/28, Golden Shores fire department responded to a call from the Department of Public Safety (Highway Patrol) to assist Desert Hills Fire Department at Mile marker 7 of Interstate 40. A small car had apparently rolled over several times and the female occupant had complained that she could feel nothing below her waist. The DPS rescue helecopter arrived and landed on the westbound side of I-40. All westbound traffic was halted for over an hour while the female was airlifted out. Two of the other 3 passengers were taken by ambulance. One passenger was not transported. The cause of the accident is still unknown. The small car was destroyed.

...A STORM A COMIN'...
TriState - Rain has already begun as this newspaper is being assembled. It looks like some rain is in our forecast for the next couple of days. The National Weather Service is predicting a 30% chance of rain thru Saturday night, but then to clear up a bit on Sunday. We'll see highs only in the 70's for the next 3 days. Along with the storm we'll have some wind and possibly some thunder and lightning. Summer is not here yet. In fact Spring has just begun. We could sure use some April Showers.

OFF-ROAD VEHICLE LAWS
Mohave County - With Spring Break coming to Mohave County Schools, the MCSO reminds motorist to use extra caution while driving on area streets, and remind parents and ATV operators about off-road vehicle regulations. The Mohave County Off Road Vehicle ordinance prohibits the riding of motor vehicles on residential or commercial property without written permission from the property owner IN THE RIDER'S POSSESSION. This includes property of another "located within one-quarter mile of a permanent residence or business establishment" - this means washes and dirt lots. Violations could result in fines of $500 and / or 30 days in jail. Deputies will also be citing operators of unregistered, unlicensed vehicles being used on the public roadways. The Mohave County Sheriff's Office wishes everyone a safe and sensible Spring Break.

VANDALS STRIKE AGAIN
G.S. - Mohave Desert Veterans Memorial in Golden Shores was the target for vandals this past weekend. Ken Barber, who does the maintenance work, stood with hands on hips and said, "Why?" He said he was very angry. "Who keeps doing things like this?" he asked. Memorial Chairman Hollis Wolfe is also wondering why. He said, "The first act of vandalism was when the POW/MIA flag was stolen. It turned up later in a field near the community park." Since then, someone cut the electric wire for the lights, and now all wires have been cut and a light stolen. Barber said, "Not only wires cut and light stolen, but the bubble heads of the water system were broken off and a shovel, rake and cap were stolen from Anthony’s truck while he was working. He was digging bowls under the trees for deep watering and somebody took his tools." The VFW replaced the tools. Volunteers have put in many hard hours building the memorial. Commander Jake Jacobs said, "It is a shame that veterans building a memorial honoring all military veterans who served our country must now fight vandals." A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the vandalism. If you have any information concerning the vandals, please contact the VFW Post 6306 at (928) 768-3033.

FOUR YOUTH ARRESTED
G.S. - As the population of Golden Shores continues to increase, so does crime. Recently a surge of thefts and vandalism has been seen. One family reports their generator stolen from a vehicle in their driveway. Other people are reporting various criminal activities, mostly during the night. Three boys and one girl were arrested in the southwest part of Golden Shores earlier this week because someone was paying attention and made a phone call (no details available). The public is urged (again) to keep your eyes and ears open and report any suspicious activities to the sheriff's office.

KNOW ABOUT NEWS?
G.S. - Sometimes the only way we can get news is if someone calls or emails to tell us about it. Anytime you know about news, please call 768-1400 or email news@goldenshores.net so we can follow up. We would love to have some articles written by local people as well. Thanks. The Editor.

SNAKE SEASON
TriState - This is a warning to all residents enjoying the outdoors right now to watch for snakes. Snakes seeking warmth are going to be sitting on concrete or asphalt trying to warm up. They will still be a little bit sluggish, but be careful what you are picking up and what's under things. Don't just pickup a rock or a stick without kicking it first. If anyone does happen upon a snake, the best course of action is to leave it alone, slowly back away and go around it. And if someone gets bit, the best thing you could do is get to the hospital or a doctor's office. The snake bite remedies of old are not suggested any more. The best snake bite kit is a cell phone and a set of car keys.

GOVERNOR PROTECTS CHILDREN

Phoenix - This Friday, I am traveling to Parker and Lake Havasu City to meet with members of the community and help kick-off Child Abuse Prevention Month. Since the beginning of my administration, I have been working hard to "re-engineer" the system that is supposed to protect our most vulnerable population - Child Protective Services. We are currently in the process of implementing important CPS reforms that include increasing the number of CPS caseworkers, providing caseworkers with the tools they need to perform their jobs effectively and establishing a clear mission that places the child's safety as the top priority. These and other important reforms resulted from our extensive recommendation and public-input process, a comprehensive study and detailed action plan for CPS reform, and legislative action that came out of last year's Special Session. More than 110 state employees and 70 community volunteers are responsible for implementing the new legislation and 42 action strategies, and they are working hard every day to make them a reality. Children in Arizona were depending on us for CPS reform, and I am proud to say that Arizona has not let them down.

IHOP COMING TO LHC
Lake Havasu City - If IHOP is one of your favorite eating places, then you'll be happy to know they will soon be in LHC. The city’s permit center issued the building permit for the new International House of Pancakes. IHOP will be located at 101 Paseo Del Sol Avenue.

WEBSITE UP...FOR NOW
Tristate - The Bureau of Reclamation website is back up for those concerned about water levels in the Tri-State. The Department of the Interior appealed the decision of the court to take the websites down. And that appeal was upheld and as a result the websites are currently back up. The original decision was made in regards to an Indian Trust law case.

NEW PHONE SCAM
Mohave County - Officers are seeing a new scam circulating through the area. It was reported that two residents received this phone call. "Advising that their grandchild was in custody and needed money for bond, they needed to wire bail money." One of the victims immediately notified the authorities, however the second did wire the money to the suspects. There are ways one can prevent from becoming a victim, according to officers. First, identify the agency that might have one of their loved ones or friends in custody. Get the actual location where that loved one is being held. Then call and confirm that the person is truly in custody and, as always, if the victims suspect a scam, contact local law enforcement immediately.

INCREASE IN AD RATES
G.S. - Advertisement rates are on the increase in Golden Shores. Both The Civic and GSX ad rates are going up April 1st. Ad prices have been so low for so long that it is hard for either paper to make any money, or even break even. The new ad rates are still much lower than any other publication around.
Why does Golden Shores eXtra need advertisers? Well, just like the television you watch, radio you listen to, and newspaper you read, GSX is a valuable free public service that requires the support of our sponsors. Thank you for including our sponsors' advertising as a part of your weekly GSX experience. Call or email about advertising rates: 768-1400 or gsnews@goldenshores.net.

DOJ LOOKS AT BUSTER
Kingman - There's some new activity concerning sexual harassment allegations made by two former employees leveled against Mohave County Supervisor Buster Johnson. Complainants Marisa Tusa and Kelly McMahon have both received letters this month from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Those letters, signed by Acting District Director Susan L. Grace, inform Tusa and McMahon that their complaints have been referred to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for review to determine whether DOJ will sue on their behalf. "If DOJ brings a lawsuit, you may seek to intervene in such suit," Grace stated in the near identical letters. "If DOJ does not bring a lawsuit, they will notify you and issue a Notice of Right to Sue, which will entitle you to sue the Respondent (Johnson) under Title VII." McMahon and Tusa said the letter surprised them in that it suggests potential for more serious consequences than they understood might result given prior communication with the EEOC. The agency in Aug., 2003, directed parties to try to resolve matters through a conciliation process. Tusa and McMahon previously expressed frustration that the conciliation process was never really initiated and now comes word of lawsuit considerations. Buster added that he wouldn‘t mind a chance to appear in court. "I have never been sued in this entire kangaroo court. I would welcome a chance to have somebody sue me where I have the chance to put up a defense for the county," he said. Supervisor Johnson added that he isn’t surprised that this has come up once again during election time.

The pins will help raise funds. A pin for $2

ONE MAN, ONE WOMAN
Washington - Last week HCM 2004, which would urge Congress to pass a Federal Marriage Amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman, passed a preliminary vote in the Senate without any amendments. Opponents of the bill attempted to water it down by proposing weakening amendments, all of which were defeated. This was a major victory! At one point it appeared likely that amendments would succeed and that the Senate would vote on a watered down FMA resolution. Now we need to continue to pray and call and e-mail senators in support of HCM 2004 before it receives its final vote. So far, nearly 1,200 of you have used our website to e-mail your senator! Spread the word to others! Please check our CAP website for more information.
