LOYALTY DAY PARADE

G.S. - The screaming noise of a jet airplane had all heads looking up. The restored Russian trainer plane made a fly-over with three passes over the parade. American Legion Post #87 Bullhead City led the parade with the Colors. Over forty floats, bands, marching groups and cars came down the parade route. Trophies were awarded to Ft. Mojave Tribal Band, Mohave High School Thunder Marching Band, Knights of Columbus Black Mountains Assembly #2476, Needles High School Band, Kingman Shriner Mini-cars, Golden Shores Community Baptist Church, Topock Elementary School Drama Club, and the Golden Shores Offroaders won a trophy for best float and also received the "Best Over-All" award.
The decorated float showed Betsy Ross sewing the first flag, the U.S. flag stating “United We Stand” and two firemen raising the flag after the terrorist attack on the twin towers. At the end of the float, an astronaut planted the U.S. flag on the moon. It was really a great parade. Barbecued beef with cole slaw, beans and roll was served to 400 hungry parade watchers. Raffle ticket holders won caps, tshirts, a leather vest, and many other items donated by local businesses.

THE HARLEYS ARE HERE
Tristate - Several people have already asked, "Where can I see all the Harleys?" Well, you won't have to go far. There will be thousands and thousands of them traveling through. In fact, if you are going to town, either way, you are sure to see hundreds of them along the way. If you are not traveling, you are still sure to hear them roaring through town day and night. They are all headed for Laughlin for the weekend for their annual Laughlin River Run. Over 60,000 motorcyclists are expected to participate. Law enforcement is out in full force. Motorists are cautioned to be on the alert for motorcycles and keep your eyes and mind on your driving.

GAY MARRIAGE IN AZ
Phoenix - The recurring argument against the Federal Marriage Amendment is that we should leave this issue to the states. Aren’t we protected by a state law – one that CAP drafted and lobbied back in 1996 – that prohibits gay marriage in Arizona? Why amend the federal constitution? The short answer is this – only a federal constitutional amendment will prevent activist judges from overturning our state law based on bogus constitutional arguments. The constitution will in fact be amended, one way or the other. We will either amend it through the Federal Marriage Amendment to preserve the understanding of marriage that has existed for thousands of years and the entire history of the United States – or it will be amended by activist judges to create a right to gay marriage that will unravel the meaning of marriage, and open the door to bigamy, polygamy, and incestuous marriage. ARIZONA TAXES DUE
Arizona - The final tax amnesty payments are due May 1. The Arizona Department of Revenue reports that because that date falls on a Saturday they will accept payments postmarked on Monday May 3. Currently the DOR has collected 68 percent of the money owed, but are still looking for an additional $23.4 million. DOR Director Elliot Hibbs said in a prepared release, "Full interest and penalties will be charged to anyone that fails to complete their payments on time. It would be a shame to lose benefits of reduced interest and no penalties." The DOR is located at 1600 West Monroe, Phoenix, and questions are directed to (602) 716-6882.

FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix - This week is Victim's Rights Week, and Arizona is once again ahead of the national curve in recognizing the rights of victims. On Monday, I signed into law Senate Bill 1222, which requires Superior Court judges to read a statement advising crime victims of their state constitutional rights prior to criminal proceedings. Too often, our criminal justice system honors the rights of the accused without highlighting the rights of the victims. This bill takes significant steps toward ensuring that crime victims know their rights, including the right to be treated with fairness, dignity and respect; the right to a speedy trial; the right to be present at court proceedings; and many others. Together, we can get the word out and make a big difference in the lives of those who have been victimized by criminal behavior.
Please don't hesitate to contact my office at 602-542-1318 or visit my website at www.governor.state.az.us.

DEADLY TRAFFIC STOP
U.S.Hwy 93 - The Arizona Department of Public Safety said one of its officers shot and killed a suspect while being kicked and beaten by two men following a Sunday morning traffic stop six miles north of Wikieup. DPS officer Frank Griego Jr. spotted marijuana in plain view inside a vehicle after making a routine traffic stop. Valenzuela said the passenger rushed Griego as he was placing the driver, Julio Pena, 24, Bullhead City, under arrest. "While both suspects were assaulting him, the officer feared for his life. He drew his weapon and fired, striking the passenger." Efren Barraza, 30, of Bullhead City, was dead at the scene of the shooting. Officer Griego was treated at Kingman Regional Medical Center for multiple facial fractures and other injuries. Pena was booked into the Mohave County jail for attempted murder and aggravated assault. Officer Griego is on paid administrative leave while the shooting is being reviewed.

ACCIDENT CLOSES SR 95

Unconfirmed reports from motorists traveling in the area said a dark Cadillac was completely mangled and did not believe anyone would survive such a wreck. The road was cleared in about an hour. DPS was investigating the scene.

INCREASE IN AD RATES
G.S. - Advertisement rates are on the increase in Golden Shores. Both The Civic and GSX ad rates went up April 1st. Ad prices have been so low for so long that it is hard for either paper to make any money, or even break even. The new ad rates are still much lower than any other publication around.
Why does Golden Shores eXtra need advertisers? Well, just like the television you watch, radio you listen to, and newspaper you read, GSX is a valuable free public service that requires the support of our sponsors. Thank you for including our sponsors' advertising as a part of your weekly GSX experience. Call or email about advertising rates: 768-1400 or gsnews@goldenshores.net.
