CAUGHT IN THE ACT
G.S. - Mohave County Sheriff's detectives arrested Randy Dean Strickland, 56, of Fort Mohave, and Richard Edward Oeltien, 46, of Golden Shores, on Friday 4/30 evening. Strickland was arrested for burglary, a felony and a misdemeanor warrant for contempt of court issued by Bullhead City Justice Court. Oeltien was arrested for burglary, a felony. On 4/21 deputies responded to a burglary in progress in the 4900 block of Island Drive and contacted the witness. The witness reported that suspects were inside an unoccupied house removing items from the residence and they fled the scene. During an on-going investigation detectives contacted Strikland in the 5400 block of Calle Del Media in Fort Mohave on Friday 4/30 and took him into custody. Oeltien was contacted in the 12700 block of Cortaro Drive in Golden Shores on Friday and took him into custody. Strickland and Oeltien were transported and booked into the Mohave County Jail without incident.

VEHICLE RECOVERED
G.S. - Mohave County Sheriff's deputies responded to a suspicious activity early Wednesday 4/28 morning in the area of Powell Lake Road. Approximately 12:15 am deputies observed an abandoned motorcycle and a vehicle identification was ran which showed the 1980 Honda motorcycle to have been stolen from the Las Vegas area. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

DUI - BAC AT .217%
G.S. - Mohave County Sheriff's deputies arrested Danny Ray Bannister, 48, of Topock, early Sunday 4/25 morning for DUI, DUI with a blood alcohol concentration over .08%, and extreme DUI with blood alcohol concentration over .15%, misdemeanors. Approximately 12:45 am deputies conducted a traffic stop at Oatman Highway and Polaris and contacted Bannister. Deputies smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Bannister. During conversations with Bannister, he admitted to have been drinking earlier. Following the field sobriety tests (FST's), Bannister was taken into custody and transported to Mohave County District II Substation where an analysis revealed his blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to be .217%. He was booked into the jail without incident.

SECOND BRIDGE ? ? ?
BHC/Laughlin - It appears that Mohave County will be helping in the efforts to obtain a second bridge connecting Bullhead City and Laughlin. At the April 19 Mohave County Board of Supervisors meeting, the supervisors were asked to approve efforts for a joint resolution between the county, the city of Kingman, Clark County, the city of Laughlin and Bullhead City in favor of a second bridge across the Colorado River. The hope is to help ease the strain caused by the Bureau of Reclamation's closure of Davis Dam to vehicle traffic. The preliminary resolution states that the total infrastructure and economic impact of a six-hour closure of the Laughlin Bridge due to an accident would result in $200,000 in lost wages, commerce and fuel costs for each such closure.

LOTTERY SCAM
Mohave County - The Sheriff's Office is warning the public regarding a lottery scam where residents receive a letter addressed to them in the postal mail from Madrid, Spain, announcing they have won a lottery. The letter continues explaining; how to claim your winnings by enclosing a photocopy of your identification along with a payment processing form seeking personal data such as date of birth and bank account information. Always be cautious when it comes to giving personal information. If you suspect fraud, contact your local law enforcement office.

TRAGEDY HALTED
Kingman - Three fifth grade Kingman students have been suspended after allegedly planning to kill the principal of their elementary school. Another student told school officials Tuesday that the three boys were conspiring to kill the administrator. Police Lt. Dean Brice said the two ten year olds and an eleven year old became upset when they were told to be quiet after they had been taught about their rights to free speech. He said the trio tried to recruit other students into the murder conspiracy. Brice said no weapons or notes were recovered and that talk amongst students is the primary evidence in the case. Kingman Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Michael Ford said the students will remain suspended until a special disciplinary hearing is conducted by the School Board. He said their suspensions could be ended or extended and that expulsions are also possible. Both Brice and Ford said they are unable to say whether the youngsters seriously planned to carry out the alleged plot or if they were just engaging in irresponsible talk. But they said any threat of violence must be addressed after the injuries and deaths that have occurred at Columbine, Colorado and at other schools across the country. ``You always take it as serious in light of what has happened in the past nationwide," Brice said. ``We're certainly glad that the student became concerned at at least went to the staff administrators to let them know. "

C.E.R.T. HAZMAT DRILL
Konnie Bodnar of Golden Shores CERT is on the left, Rosalie Dokter of Mohave Valley CERT is on the right. The middle two ladies are from the Lake Havasu City Chapter of the American Red Cross (no names available). Mohave Valley - In conjunction with the April 1st Laughlin emergency services HAZMAT drill, Mohave Valley and Golden Shores Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) and American Red Cross members joined forces in a sheltering exercise at the Mohave Valley Elementary School gym. Red Cross instructor Jack Pike came from Flagstaff to oversee the activity. CERT participants who have had Red Cross sheltering training teamed up with American Red Cross volunteers from Lake Havasu City and Bullhead City to inspect the shelter site for hazards, and then opened the gym to clients. Other CERT volunteers posed as evacuees from an area up-river air-borne contaminant. Both the Red Cross and CERT members expressed satisfaction with the exercise.

FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix - This week is the first week Medicare-eligible seniors can sign up for the federal prescription drug card. The complexity of the federal card and other prescription drug discount cards can be daunting for seniors and caregivers, and the entire system can be incredibly confusing. I'd like to remind you about a simple alternative, the Arizona CoppeRx Card. The CoppeRx Card is free of charge, free of restrictions, free of hassle and free of expiration. Every person aged 65 and older, and those who are disabled, are eligible for the CoppeRx Card. The discounts from the CoppeRx Card apply to all prescription drug purchases, and the CoppeRx Card can be used at any one of the 500 participating pharmacies around the state. And unlike the federal card, the CoppeRx Card has no expiration date. It will not go away in 2006 like the dozens of Medicare-approved discount cards. In addition, low-income seniors have the opportunity to receive the CoppeRx Plus Card, which enables them to purchase any Eli Lilly brand pharmaceutical for only $12 per prescription per month.

HARLEYS, WHERE?
TriState - Law enforcement was kept busy over the weekend with the Laughlin River Run. There were many traffic citations and arrests made over the weekend, but we didn't have the noise or the volume we normally see during the River Run. Traffic was still heavy, but normally we, in G.S., can hear the roar of Harleys all evening and frequently throughout the night. Of all the heavy traffic, there were only 17 accidents, 7 reported no injuries. There were only 11 felony arrests that included 2 D.U.I.'s. 3 motorcycle thefts were reported. One death was reported of an Oregon man died from injuries suffered in a traffic accident in northern Arizona. Gary Grace, 52, Halfway, Oregon, was critically injured when his Harley Davidson motorcycle struck a Suburban on State Rt. 68 last Thursday in Golden Valley. Golden Shores Fire responded to one injury accident on Highway 66 at milepost 21 early Thursday 4/22 evening. Approximately 5:00 pm deputies responded to the scene of a motorcycle accident where the male driver was airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas and the female passenger was transported to Needles Hospital with a possible broken arm.

LAW WARNS GRADUATES
TriState - The end of the school year is almost here and "parties" (some sanctioned by parents) are being planned for prom, graduation etc. Area law enforcement recognizes the extreme hazards of these types of parties and will be making arrests of those individuals who break the law.

IT'S A BOY!
G.S. - Tom & Summer have a baby boy! They are at home and doing fine.

THE COMETS ARE COMING
Tristate - Over the next couple of weeks, if you are fortunate enough not to have any big white lights in your neighborhood, you might be able to find an extra treat in the skies. Two comets, LINEAR and NEAT, will be visible to the naked eye between now and mid-May. LINEAR is supposed to be peeking up above the horizon in the morning. Comet NEAT is expected to be visible to the southwest in the evenings this week.

BOATING ACCIDENT
Colorado River - On Sunday 4/25 between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. a jet boat, driven by Joe Garcia, 33, was northbound, just leaving the no wake zone when the driver accelerated. The water conditions were described as choppy due to wind and other river traffic. Reportedly the driver began to cross the wake of a boat taxi by accelerating. The bow of the boat came out of the water in a vertical position then slammed into the water (possibly submerging in the water). According to witnesses the boat may have been traveling up to 45 mph. Upon colliding with the water the boat broke apart and all occupants were thrown into the water. The water taxi rendered assistance and all occupants were transported to the Western Arizona Regional Medical Hospital. The driver of the boat sustained major injury and was then transported to U.M.C. Las Vegas. All occupants of the boat were from Lake Ellsinore California.

TEACHERS
  - After being interviewed by the school administration, the eager teaching prospect said:
"Let me see if I've got this right.
You want me to go into that room with all those kids and fill their every waking moment with a love for learning." And I'm supposed to instill a sense of pride in their ethnicity, modify their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse and even censor their T-shirt messages and dress habits.
You want me to wage a war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, check their backpacks for weapons of mass destruction, and raise their self-esteem.
You want me to teach them patriotism, good citizenship, sportsmanship, and fair play, how and where to register to vote, how to balance a checkbook, and how to apply for a job.
I am to check their heads for lice, maintain a safe environment, recognize signs of antisocial behavior, offer advice, write letters of recommendation for student employment and scholarships, encourage respect for their elders and future employers.
And I am to communicate regularly with the parents by letter, telephone, newsletter, and report card.
All of this I am to do with just a piece of chalk, a computer, a few books, a bulletin board, and a big smile AND on a starting salary that qualifies my family for food stamps!
You want me to do all of this, and you expect me NOT TO PRAY?"

    ON THIS DAY...
Roger Bannister, a young English medical student, ran 1 mile (1.6 km) in less than 4 minutes on this date in 1954. He was the first athlete ever to do so. He had thought about withdrawing from the race because of bad weather.

Experience is the thing you have left when everything else is gone.
