THE COPS ARE COMING
G.S. - At the Golden Shores Civic Association Monthly Meeting on Wednesday 5/12 at 7:30 p.m. one of the guests was Jim McCabe, chief deputy of Mohave County Sheriff's Office. McCabe is well aware that people in G.S. would like to see more patrol and possibly have officers full time in G.S. McCabe stated that he would love to do that, but it is not in the county budget. McCabe said that of the last five new officers that entered the academy, only three finished. He added that MCSO currently has 12 openings for deputies, but they are hard to fill because MCSO cannot offer the pay that is being offered by competitive law enforcement agencies in the tri-state area. He said that Bullhead City, for example, is paying $10,000 per year more than MCSO can pay. However, McCabe said, "Because residents here have requested more patrol, we ARE COMING TO G.S. and you are going to see citations issued for speeding, stop signs, and unlicensed vehicles (including wheelchairs) on city streets." In other words, "You asked for it, you're going to get it, but you're probably not going to like it."

NO SEAT BELTS, 2 DIE
Havasu Landing, CA - Wednesday morning the California Highway Patrol worked a single-vehicle accident near Havasu Landing found both the driver and passenger ejected from the vehicle. The female driver had been traveling at an unknown speed and she failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. Her vehicle drove up onto the right dirt shoulder, where she overcorrected and traveled across both lanes of traffic and up a five foot high dirt burm. The vehicle overturned in mid-air and ejected her because she was not wearing a seat belt. The vehicle continued in mid-air until it landed on it’s roof and came to rest. The vehicle rolled over on top of the passenger, also not wearing his seat belt. He had to be extracated from the scene by the fire department. He was air-evacuated to UMC Las Vegas and was pronounced dead at that time. Dead are Alicha Hughes, 30, of Ontario, CA and Ellis Jones, 35, of Rialto, CA. CHP stressed that seat belts could have saved these lives.

NEW AIRLINE SERVICE
LAKE HAVASU CITY - Dynasty Air, a start-up airline that will be beginning service in Lake Havasu City soon, said they came to the city because they saw a need. They will begin with flights four days a week with the hope of expanding service to multiple flights per day, 7 days a week. They will connect passengers to Las Vegas, Scottsdale and Phoenix.
BULLHEAD CITY - Western Express got off the ground Thursday at Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport, which is host to the new airline, run by Laughlin Ranch developer David Lords. Initially, there will be 4 scheduled flights a week, servicing Scottsdale to Bullhead, and Bullhead to the Riverside County area. CHECKPOINTS ANNOUNCED
Lake Mohave - The Arizona Game and Fish Department will be part of a multi-agency enforcement effort on Lake Mohave this weekend, checking for boaters operating under the influence. Arizona Game and Fish, the National Park Service, the Nevada Division of Wildlife, and the Bullhead City Police Department will be enforcing Arizona's OUI legal limit of a .08 blood-alcohol content. Tim Baumgarten, who coordinates safety checkpoints for the Arizona Game and Fish Department's Kingman regional office said that more than half of all boating accidents involve alcohol. All boaters passing through the checkpoint will be subject to a systematic safety inspection this weekend. Additional multi-agency OUI checkpoints will occur on the Colorado River and its reservoirs throughout the boating season.

NEW HOSPITAL IN LHC
Lake Havasu City - A new hospital in Lake Havasu City had its groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday and spokeswoman for the project Kathy Sickles says this is begins a new era of health care. This will be a non-profit facility, so any of the profits received through the operation of the facility will be directly reinvested right back in our community. The overall emphasis is the extraordinary care that patients will receive. The facility starts its first phase shortly and the entire project should be completed by midway through 2005.

NEW HOSPITAL IN MV
Mohave Valley - Ground was broken Tuesday at a ceremony in Mohave Valley for the Valley View Medical Center. The new 60-bed hospital represents a $30,000,000 investment in the future of healthcare for this community. To celebrate the groundbreaking, Province Healthcare invited the Fort Mojave Tribal Band, the oldest Native American band in the United States. The President and Chief Operating Officer of Province Healthcare, Dan Slipkovich, was among the many speakers. With work starting this week, the Valley View Medical Center is currently on pace to open sometime in the second half of 2005.

FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix - As we head into summer, soaring gas prices are a critical concern for our state. Unfortunately, recent actions at the federal level regarding this issue does not reflect its level of importance. In fact, these actions actually harm Arizona more than help us.
On February 25th, I wrote a letter to President Bush asking for an inquiry into soaring gas prices. At that time, the average price of gas in Arizona was $1.89. Today, the average price of gas hit $2.15, surpassing the average gas price during the height of last year's gas crisis. Yesterday I received a response letter from the White House that offered no new information and failed to outline a strategy for inquiry into rising prices. The letter does not tell us anything we did not already know about the price of gas and offers no plan for relief. This is particularly disturbing at a time when the oil industry is reporting billions of dollars in profits.
Although states are limited in our ability to bring down gas prices, I have directed my staff to explore any and all options available to us to bring price relief to Arizonans. My office will also be in contact with other governors to review available options and move quickly toward real answers, such as regional blends of gasoline that would meet federal requirements in several states.
Please don't hesitate to contact my office at 602-542-1318 or visit my website at www.governor.state.az.us.

LAW WARNS GRADUATES
TriState - The end of the school year is almost here and "parties" (some sanctioned by parents) are being planned for prom, graduation etc. Area law enforcement recognizes the extreme hazards of these types of parties and will be making arrests of those individuals who break the law.

THE COMETS ARE HERE
Tristate - Over the next couple of weeks, if you are fortunate enough not to have any big white lights in your neighborhood, you might be able to find an extra treat in the skies. Two comets, LINEAR and NEAT, will be visible to the naked eye between now and mid-May. LINEAR is supposed to be peeking up above the horizon in the morning. Comet NEAT is expected to be visible in the west near Venus in the evenings this week.

POSTMASTER DEMANDS APOLOGY
G.S. - In regard to an article earlier this year titled "POSTMASTER DISRESPECTFUL" our local postmaster sent to this editor a letter of demand for an apology. Therefore, I am apologizing for the content of that article. However, I am not apologizing for printing news that comes to me from reliable sources. The postmaster, Bonnie Comeau, stated in her demand letter, "I left Topock February 13, 2004 after work and returned to work in Topock March 22, 2004. I was working in another office in another part of the state and then went on a training course in Kingman and then on vacation for two weeks. I was not back to work in Topock during this terrible time for the community. The flag was raised due to postal regulations. This can be confirmed through the Phoenix head office. Jackie Healy has filed a statement, stating your statement is false. I have contacted a lawyer that represents postmasters with the post office and was asked to have you put a retraction and apology in the Weekly E-News." So here it is.

    ON THIS DAY...
After the United States annexed Texas, a border dispute with Mexico led to a declaration of war on this date in 1846. In less than a year and a half, American forces conquered California, the New Mexico region and northern Mexico.
