ROLLOVER AT CATFISH

G.S. -
Shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday 5/26 the Golden Shores Fire Department responded to an accident on County Highway 1 just south of Catfish Paradise. The vehicle was on it's side and the female driver was trapped inside the vehicle. By the time we took a picture, the fire crew had already pushed the vehicle back to upright position. The lady had apparently failed to negotiate a curve and hit the sand embankment causing her vehicle to flip around and over on it's side. Although two ambulances and a fire truck were on the scene, the lady got out and walked away from the accident seemingly uninjured, other than her pride.

G.S. MAN ARRESTED DUI
Mohave Valley -
Mohave County Sheriff's detectives arrested Ralph Henry Hartwock Jr., 35, of Golden Shores, early Tuesday 5/25 afternoon for aggravated DUI, felony, and a misdemeanor warrant for contempt of court issued by Bullhead City Justice Court. Approximately 2:30 pm detectives conducted a traffic stop at Highway 66 and milepost 1 and contacted Hartwock. Detectives smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Hartwock. A records check showed Hartwock to have an outstanding warrant and a suspended driver's license out of California. Hartwock was taken into custody and transported to the Mohave County District II Substation where a field sobriety test was conducted and a blood alcohol concentration test revealed his BAC to be .119%. Hartwock was booked into the jail without incident. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

VFW 6306 and Auxiliaries will hold a Memorial Day service at Mohave Desert Veterans Memorial at the Community Park on May 31 at 8 a.m. The public is invited.
BE A HERO!
Tri-State -
The Bullhead City Police Department, along with other law enforcement agencies, will be stepping up enforcement while participating in the National campaigns of "Click It or Ticket", "Be a Hero" and "You Drink & Drive, You Lose". The National Campaign is conducted throughout the remainder of May thru June 6, 2004.
Law enforcement will utilize saturation patrols to enforce traffic laws in our area. The saturation patrol, is an increased number of officers who will patrol a concentrated geographic area.
The focus of the saturation patrols will be on usage of seatbelts, child safety restraints and driving under the influence. The Memorial Day Holiday is generally thought of as the kick-off for the summer. We will see an influx of visitors on our roadways and waterways. As a result, law enforcement will be on the Colorado River to help ensure a safe and happy weekend for all. These officers will be looking for violators of boating regulations, such as Operating a watercraft Under the Influence.

BUSY WEEKEND EXPECTED
Colorado River -
The Bureau of Reclamation reports that they expect to see heavy traffic at Hoover Dam and on the Colorado River over Memorial Day Weekend. Approximately 500 motorcycles will be driving across Hoover Dam to honor veterans, along with residents of the Tri-State driving to and from Las Vegas. Hoover Dam police will be managing traffic and visitors throughout the holiday period. From mid-morning until about noon on Sunday May 30 the road across the dam will be closed to all traffic to allow 500 members of the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club and their associates to conduct the 6th annual ceremonial Memorial Day motorcycle ride across Hoover Dam. BOY AMAZES COURT
Kingman -
An 11-year-old former straight-A student stunned a Mohave County courtroom Monday when he described to the judge that he planned to use a knife, and possibly a shotgun to kill his principal. The boy pled guilty to felony charges of conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault. He also pled guilty to a misdemanor count of threatening and intimidating. The boy admitted to Mohave County Superior Court Judge Richard Weiss that he and two other students planned the attack on Principal Mary Ann Smith together. The other two boys denied the charges, and Judge Weiss has scheduled their next hearing for June 21st.
INMATE FAILS TO RETURN
Kingman -
Timothy Theodore Rhodes failed to return to the jail annex on Tuesday 5/25 evening. Rhodes was authorized for work release. Rhodes was arrested on May 15, 2004, for probation violation on original charges of possession of dangerous drugs for sale, possession of dangerous drugs, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, all felonies. Rhodes is a 48-year-old white male, 5'11", 180 lbs, hazel eyes and brown hair. Anyone with information of his whereabouts is asked to notify MCSO at 758-0700 or 800-522-4312.
FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix -
With an increase in temperature comes an increase in the risk of forest fires. This weekend is Memorial Day weekend, and thousands of desert-dwellers will head for the mountains to cook and camp. We are the stewards of our forests, and it is our responsibility to treat them with care so we can hand them off to future generations at least as healthy as they were when we inherited them. This good stewardship starts with preventing forest fires.
Please don't smoke, light campfires or operate machinery that can cause sparks in our forests that carry fire restrictions. If you do light a campfire, be sure you are not in a fire-restricted forest, and be sure to put it out with plenty of water. Simply burying a fire in dirt will not extinguish it.
Numerous fire restrictions are in place for federal and state land alike. To get the latest on fire restrictions and forest closures, call toll free (877) 864-6985.
Whatever your plans are for Memorial Day, have a great weekend.
Please don't hesitate to contact my office at (800) 253-0883 or visit my website at www.governor.state.az.us.

DEADLY WATER WEEKEND
Lake Mojave -
A Lakewood, California man died at Lake Mohave and a Carson City, Nevada man is missing and presumed drowned at Lake Mohave after separate accidents over the weekend. Lake Mead National Recreation Area spokeswoman Roxanne Dey said the first incident occurred on the Nevada side of Lake Mohave Saturday afternoon. She said Johnny Tran, 22, didn't know how to swim and apparently drowned in six feet of water at 83 Dollar Cove.
An off duty paramedic and National Park Service rangers unsuccessfully attempted to revive Tran. Dey said the second incident occurred Sunday afternoon on the Arizona side of the Virgin Basin of Lake Mead. She said Vincent P. Petrilena, 46, was unable to swim back to the boat after he went down the slide of a houseboat into the lake. Dey said rangers and divers have been unable to locate Petrilena who is presumed drowned.
DEADLY CRASH ON HWY 68
Bullhead City -
Friday night 5/21 there was a fatal accident on Highway 68. Both Bullhead City and Golden Valley Fire Departments responded to reports of a vehicle over the side of the road, with an explosion. A Bullhead City Fire Department spokesman said "He had taken out 160 feet of guardrail, and then went off the road into a 50 foot deep ravine. Once he hit the bottom of the ravine, we do know that it was on fire. Whether there was an explosion or not, we're not sure about. The male victim in this, who was the driver, had been ejected from the truck. His wife, however, was tossed out and pinned with debris from the truck itself. The wife was 8 months pregnant, and unfortunately, did not survive the crash. The male victim was taken by Bullhead City Ambulance to Western Arizona Regional Medical Center."
The crash is still under investigation.

UNDERAGE DRINKING
Lake Havasu City -
Mohave County Sheriff's deputies arrested Adam Rulfo Smith, 20, of Guleta, California, early Saturday 5/22 evening for underage drinking while operating a watercraft, a misdemeanor.
Approximately 6:10 pm deputies observed a personal watercraft traveling north in the south basin; entering the posted no wake zone of Thompson Bay. Smith, the operator, failed to reduce the speed of the watercraft to a wake less speed. Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the watercraft and contacted Smith. Deputies smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Smith. During conversations with Smith, he admitted to having a couple drinks that day. An onboard portable intoxilyzer test revealed Smith's blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to be .28%. Smith was taken into custody, transported and booked into the Mohave County District III Substation without incident. The watercraft was released to the rental company.
GO-PEDS ILLEGAL?
Bullhead City -
Because of the vast nunber of complaints about Go Peds, the Police Department and other law enforcement agencies are being forced to take action. These mechanized scooters have become more popular and many juveniles are utilizing them for transportation, as well as recreation. As a result they are being ridden on city streets. They are considered a motor vehicle and they are not licensed. Bullhead City Police School Resource Officers spent time in the classrooms advising kids where they can legally be ridden. They also wanted to inform parents on these laws.
Law enforcement is fearful that the children are riding them at night on the roadways. This is extremely dangerous and could result in a tragic accident. The Bullhead City Police Department will issue citations to violators.
SUPREME COURT STANDS
Phoenix -
Late Tuesday afternoon the Arizona Supreme Court announced that it would not consider an appeal from an Arizona Court of Appeals decision upholding the 1996 law CAP drafted that prohibits same sex marriage in Arizona. This is an important victory, but understand that this legal challenge started long before Massachusetts began granting marriage licenses to same sex couples. It remains a certainty that Arizona same sex partners who get “married” in Massachusetts will come back to Arizona and launch a new challenge to this law, probably soon.

MICROSOFT DUMPING PRODUCTS
Seattle -
Somewhere in Redmond, there's a plot full of shallow, unmarked graves. The last resting place of Microsoft's ill-begotten hardware products just keeps growing. Now, you can add Wi-Fi to the crowded cemetery, joining the sound card, USB speakers and Trackpoint. What's next? Commentators think it might just be the Xbox. Expensive and so far disappointing, it seems Microsoft is dumping anything that doesn't make "big money". Software is expensive to develop, but cheap to reproduce. Maybe Microsoft should stay with their original forte.

FLAG FOLDING AT TOPOCK

G.S. -
VFW 6306 Commander Jake Jacobs and Auxiliary President Jeannie La France visited the fourth grade at Topock Elementary School to present a U.S. flag education program on May 25.
A special VCR tape on the handling and displaying our flag was shown. After the tape was viewed, Jacobs and La France, assisted by students Robert Chance and Matthew Daniel, demonstrated how to properly fold the U.S. flag.
A question and answer period followed. One student asked, "What does the red, white and blue stand for?" The answer: Red is for valor and zeal, white is for hope and cleanliness of life, and blue is for reverence and loyalty."
Another student wanted to know, "Why do we burn a worn out flag? Isn't it desecrating the flag?" Jacobs answered that the flag is burned with reverence, dignity and respect in a special ceremony. The ashes are then buried with respect and a salute.
A card was given to each student in recognition of participation is the Flag Education Program.

KICK BUTTS CONTEST

G.S. -
The third grade class boarded the school bus at Topock Elementary School to go bowling at Thunder Lanes in Ft. Mohave. Recently, the third grade won the Kick Butts Contest and also won a trip to go bowling and have pizza for lunch.
Many balls were “gutter dusters” as the balls left the alley to roll down the sides of the lane. Scores ranged from 35 to 93. Nothing compared to the fun scored by students and chaperones. Third grade teacher Roberta Anderson got top score for the adults bowling. She turned in a score of 147.
Pizzas were ready as the group filed into the Pizza Hut next to Safeway. It was short work to get through the pizzas and soft drinks. The class then returned to school a happy group.
