During their patrol, they cited 22 for operating under the influence, 14 for minor consumption, and 78 were cited for safety violations. Warnings were also given to numerous boaters for safety issues and the MCSO says if you have any questions regarding how to properly equip your boat for safety concerns, call them at 758-0700.

The Fire Department responded to 99 calls for service and 41 related to holiday weekend activities.

GOLF CART HITS CAR
G.S. -
Friday evening 5/28 at around 9:00 p.m. the Golden Shores Fire Department and the Mohave County Sheriff responded to Monarch and Waterreed where a late model vehicle was hit by a golf cart. Just as the eastbound car reached Monarch the passenger yelled "look out" and suddenly the golf cart, which was southbound on Waterreed, crashed into the left side of the car and knocked the car off the road. The golf cart had no lights. The passenger in the car hit her head on the windshield but was treated and released at the scene. One of the passengers on the golf cart hit the ground, but the ladies in the car were told by the golf cart passengers that they were going for help. They helped the one person aboard that had been thrown and they were not seen again. The accident is believed to be still under investigation.

FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix -
Like water, tourism is a lifeblood for Arizona. It brings millions of visitors to our state from around the world, and invites them to explore every corner of our state. Whether people come for the heritage tourism of rural Arizona, the natural beauty throughout the state, or the sports and cultural attractions of our urban areas, tourism is an integral part of our past, present and future. Last week I signed into law the bipartisan budget that includes an important increase in our investment in Arizona tourism. The Arizona Office of Tourism received a crucial $2.6 million increase in its budget. Tourism contributes $30 billion to Arizona's economy each year, and is responsible for 450,000 jobs. In fact, Arizona's leisure and hospitality industry generated 1,800 new jobs in April alone. Every dollar invested in Arizona tourism is a dollar that will be multiplied many times over for the people of Arizona.
Please don't hesitate to contact my office at (800) 253-0883 or visit my website at www.governor.state.az.us.

STOP OR I'LL SHOOT
Bullhead City -
On 5/17 in Sean Pherreigo flagged down an undercover officer and told him that he had just shot someone inside of his residence. When the officers arrived they located the body of Robert James Francis III who had been shot.
Investigators learned that Robert Francis had made numerous threats against Sean Pherreigo. Reportedly Francis believed that Pherreigo had stolen some of his property.
For several days before the shooting Francis told Pherreigo that he would beat him up and take his children. Pherreigo knew that Francis had a reputation for violence and for beating people up with a metal mag light. It should be noted that Francis is 6’5" tall and Pherreigo is 5’8" tall.
About 1:00 p.m. Francis again came to the residence and demanded that Pherreigo come out. Pherreigo warmed Francis to stop or he would shoot. Francis told him “go ahead and shoot” and approached Pherreigo. Pherreigo fired the .22 rifle a couple of times, and warned Francis to stop but Francis continued to approach him. Pherreigo fired again eventually stopping Francis.
Francis was transported to W.A.R.M.C. and later pronounced deceased.
The weapon was located at the scene during the initial investigation.
Sean Pherreigo was originally charged with Aggravated Assault with a weapon. However, County Attorney Steve Wilson indicates that the charges are declined because “this appears to be a clear case of self-defense."
FOOD CARE SIGNUP
G.S. -
Food Care has already slowed down some for the summer, but the good stuff just keeps coming! Last month we had fresh squash, cabbage, corn and raddishes in addition to all the regular good stuff that comes in the $15 box. If you are qualified and not getting the Food Care each month, you're missing out.
Signup this month is a bit different. Since there is no Civic breakfast during the summer, we are having a signup table at the Civic Center from 11:00-12:00 on Friday June 4 and Monday June 7 during the Senior Nutrition luncheon time.
A box of food worth around $50 is still only $15 and you can get up to 3 boxes. Pickup this month will still be at the church on Tuesday June 15.
SURVEY
We asked the 2 questions every week for two whole months:
Would you like to receive News Special Alerts?
Would you like to have a website where you can find other local people going to BHC, LHC, Algodones and share rides/expenses?
We only got 2 responses. So much for that...

TEACHER HONORED

G.S. -
Certificates of achievement were presented to Topock Elementary School students May 26. At that time, Principal Brett Agenbroad presented a special award to a special teacher. The award was for achievements in school activities and extra curricular work performed. Agenbroad said, "One teacher has contributed far beyond the call of duty." Sixth grade homeroom and jr. high teacher Beverley James was called to the stage.
James donates after-school time for a drama club. Also works after hours and weekends to finish school projects. She planned extensive field trips, out of state field trips, directed students who worked at community breakfasts and chaperones out of state student field trips.
James used her personal funds to buy school uniforms and sponsored a student to go on the Catalina field trip. She also teaches a night class at MCC and works a second job to help support her family and a Topock student. She has opened her home to Topock students who have made major life transitions.
After reading the list of achievements, Agenbroad gave a special trophy to Beverley James. As she held her trophy, the audience gave a thunderous standing ovation.
