BARON PEST CONTROL ROBBED

G.S. - Around 8:00 a.m. Thursday 6/24 a Baron Pest Control driver was sitting at the side of the road in the 5100 block of Casa Grande checking his schedule and viewing his map when a pickup truck approached and stopped. Two white males exited the older truck. One showed the Baron driver a knife and demanded all his money while the other stood at the passenger side. The Baron driver turned over the company money as well as his own wallet and was not injured. The amount of cash taken by the robber is not known. Apparently the robber only wanted cash. No equipment or supplies are believed to have been taken from the Baron truck. Both suspects have stringy blond hair, 6 foot tall with thin builts. The older Ford pickup is whitish yellow in color. A number of homes in Golden Shores were expected to be serviced Thursday by Baron. If you have any information about this, please contact Mohave County Sheriff's Office at 758-0700 or (800)522-4312.

DEATH INVESTIGATION

Davis Dam - Mohave County Sheriff's detectives responded to the scene of a dead man at about 2:16 pm on Friday 6/18 and spoke with the reporting parties who discovered the man's body while they were boating on Lake Mohave. The body, identified as Richard Wayne Gala, 39, of Mohave Valley, was located near the Dam on the Arizona side, where he was partially in the lake water, along the bank. Mohave County Sheriff's detectives have determined the cause of death was drowing. Investigations determined that Gala was cliff diving when he fell over the cliffs, became unconscious, when he hit the water. Detectives learned that Gala had cliff dived in the same area about 2 weeks prior.

MISSING PERSON FOUND

Lake Havasu - After the 6/17 fatal boat crash on Lake Havasu, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office now reports the recovery of 47-year-old Steven Patchett. Search was suspended for Saturday and Sunday because of heavy boat traffic. Boats were on the water, but no divers because of the safety concerns. The diver search resumed Monday and Tuesday the body surfaced. A citizen reported seeing the body about 11:30 a.m., and then one of the boats went down and made the recovery. Patchett's 10-year-old son Tyler also died in the accident and they are still unsure if alcohol was a factor.

SUPERVISORS UPDATED

Lake Havasu City - At the recent Mohave County Board of Supervisors Meeting in Lake Havasu City, Supervisor Buster Johnson discussed a meeting he went to that State Senator Linda Binder called for in regards to nuclear testing in Nevada. The National Nuclear Security Administration Officials say the testing is normal and not dangerous because of these reasons. "They have a three-lock security system in place, in the event of any accidents. The United States is the only country not replacing aging nuclear weapons with new ones. It is necessary to conduct tests on our stockpile for safety and reliability. It is important that our weapons are not a threat to our own citizens. They consider all experiments as sub-critical research, this means that critical mass is not met, so a chain-reaction does not take place, which is required for nuclear detonation." All indications were that the attendees of this meeting were satisfied with the answers they received.

5 DEAD IN HEAD-ON COLLISION

Needles - On State Route 62 in California a five person two-car, fatal accident occurred Thursday afternoon 6/17. CHP spokesman said neither car saw each other coming, because the car was attempting to pass a semi-truck while cresting a hill. Both vehicles exploded into flames and both drivers were killed. The three passengers in vehicle 1, the Lincoln, also sustained fatal injuries. Identification of the deceased is yet to be determined due to the severity of the burns." All of the bodies have been taken to the San Bernardino County Coroner's Office and the investigation is being handled by CHP's Major Accident Investigation Team. The only eye-witness, a semi-truck driver, detailed the events. "The driver said the Lincoln just whipped out around him and boom, he just hit that car head-on. There was no evidence of any skid marks, just both vehicles burst into flames."

CURRENT DROUGHT SURVEY

Las Vegas - The U.S. Geological Survey released a report last week showing that the drought that much of the Southwest is suffering could be the biggest in 500 years, with effects in the Colorado River basin considerably worse than in the Dust Bowl years. The drought has produced the lowest flow in the Colorado River on record, nearly half what it was from 1930-1937. The five-year average of 7.11 million acre-feet supplants the previous low, an 8.84 million acre-foot average estimated between 1590 and 1594. That number is based on tree-ring reconstructions, as record-keeping on river flows did not start until 1895.
The Bureau of Reclamation's Lower Colorado Region has released their river operations schedule for the weeks of June 28th through July 11th. The BOR says that average daily releases may vary in response to changing conditions. Currently, Lake Powell is at 43% capacity while Lake Mead sits at 55% capacity.

BORDER PATROL MADE IN MEXICO

National - According to Washington Times reporter, Jerry Seper, the U.S.'s new border patrol uniforms are rubbing some the wrong way--especially since they all carry the tag "Made in Mexico." Others are livid that our government would outsource the uniforms with little or no regard to safety and security issues. Already, more than $30 million new uniforms have been ordered.
"What system is in place to ensure that these uniforms are not stolen en masse or sold outright in Mexico to be used by terrorists, alien smugglers or drug dealers?"
To date there are more than 71,000 citizens who support the initiative. This is a critical issue that left unchecked will only escalate into catastrophe. Please help in alerting friends, family, and co-workers urging them to add their name in support of this effort by clicking here: www.grassfire.org.

STORMS ROLLING IN

TriState - Until now this summer has been quite pleasant with temperatures under 105°. But Thursday the weather took a turn and Golden Shores hit 113° and it got a bit sticky. So is this summer going to abnormally cool, normally hot, or abnormally hot. Who knows? Maybe we should talk to Scott Browne, our local weather expert.

FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix - This week I traveled to New Mexico to attend the annual meeting of the Western Governor's Association (WGA). At this meeting, we tackled two big issues that have significant impact on western states, drought and the availability of clean, secure and diversified sources of energy.
Most western states are experiencing the same drought conditions as Arizona, so the Western Governors Association called for a nationwide drought policy that takes a science-based approach to creating an early warning system for drought conditions. Second, we called for the development of a clean, secure and diversified energy system for the West that uses the vast potential for solar and wind power available in this region of the country. Governors are teaming up to see how we could produce 30,000 megawatts of nonpolluting energy in the West by 2015, and increase energy efficiency by 20 percent in 2020. Arizona and the West have the potential to lead the world in the generation of clean energy without depleting our natural resources.

WEST NILE PREVALENT IN AZ

Phoenix - No fatalities have been reported from human cases of West Nile Virus in Arizona this year, but the rate of infection for Arizonans has been higher than anywhere else nationwide. Last month, the Arizona Department of Health Services reported that mosquitoes in Maricopa County had tested positive for West Nile Virus. Each of the 20 human cases reported in the state this year are believed to have been contracted in Arizona. Six other states have reported human West Nile cases, but none have reported more than two, based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and state health departments.

It is called FamilyNet Television. According to Denise Cook of FamilyNet, they will feature headline news throughout the day including breaking news. In addition, their news department will also produce a primetime strip of worldview programs slated for a fall premiere. These one-hour programs will cover a wide range of topics which impact today’s families, including politics and public policy, popular culture, and law and justice.
Based in Fort Worth, Texas, FamilyNet is a 24-hour television network airing more than 50 hours of original, values-based programs weekly providing a reliable, safe viewing destination for today’s family. FamilyNet can be seen in more than 32 million TV households. For more information please visit the FamilyNet web site at www.FamilyNet.com.

BUSTER JOHNSON'S TAXROLLBACK

Mohave County - County Supervisor, Buster Johnson, has worked hard for us this year introducing two bills, one in the Senate and the other in the House, to roll back our property taxes and cap the amount of increase that assessed evaluation can be raised in any year. "We have gained tremendous support," says Johnson, "but these groups have scared away the required number to get the bill passed. By not calling for a vote, we did not lose any ground and now have some of the opposition out in the open. There were no surprises on the groups in opposition. I did not have another elected official in our County come forth to support the bill," Johnson continued. "We knew going in that the ones who drink at the trough would not be happy. The Assessor from Maricopa County and The Arizona Tax Research Association assisted with the legislation. Senator Weiers and Legislator Huffman made sure that the bill was heard and gave us their support." For all the information and the latest updates, Buster has setup a special website: Click Here

    OFF WITH BIG WHITE LIGHTS

G.S. - One person said, "It's so nice not to have so many "big white lights on all night long." Some others simply said to say "THANKS" to those who have turned of the big white lights or replaced them with amber lights. It is so much nicer in Golden Shores to be able to see the stars, comets, planets, etc. without so much glare from the annoying white lights.

When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her out to some place expensive. So I took her to the gas station.
