WAL-MART ROBBERY

Bullhead City - On Tuesday 6/29 at arround 4:00 p.m. Mario Padilla and two juveniles were arrested on charges of Aggravated Robbery at Wal-Mart 2840 Highway 95. While BHCPD Officer Mike Sodaro was on regular patrol he entered the Wal-Mart parking lot when he noticed four subjects fighting. Officer Sodaro noted that one male subject was being held down while the others were kicking and punching him. Officer Sodaro made contact and two of the male subjects fled the area. One of the males in the fight was Michael Simerly, a Wal-Mart employee who sustained minor injuries in the attack. When Simerly heard the merchandise alarm go off and noticed suspect Padilla trying to pull something out of his pants, a car stereo. Simerly made contact with the suspect running into the parking lot with two juveniles. After taking Padilla to the ground to prevent him from getting away, the two juveniles then attacked Simerly by kicking and punching him in an attempt to free Suspect Padilla. Padilla tossed the stereo aside and one of the juveniles picked it up and fled. Officer Sodaro secured Suspect Padilla and, with the help of some citizens and Wal-Mart employees, apprehended the subjects.
At the BHCPD officers discovered that the suspects were in possession of a car key. All three suspects denied knowledge of a car. Detective Dean Lott responded to the Wal-Mart parking lot and located a 1997 Black Honda 4dr in the parking lot. Upon further investigation it was discovered that the vehicle had been stolen in San Bernardino. The vehicle was towed to the Bullhead City Police Department as evidence and for processing. During inventory of the vehicle Detective Lott saw what appeared to be a shotgun located in the trunk, which turned out to be a realistic looking plastic toy gun.
The suspects, ages 19, 17 and 16, all of San Bernadino, have been charged with aggravated robbery and possession of a stolen vehicle.

ONE DEAD IN FATAL ACCIDENT

Dolan Springs - Mohave County Sheriff's deputies responded to a single vehicle rollover accident two miles west of Highway 93 at First Street on Monday 6/28 morning. Approximately 10:30 am deputies responded to the scene of a fatal rollover accident where Jessie L. Barror, 55, of Dolan Springs, was pronounced dead at the scene. Apparently the vehicle she was driving swerved from the left then back to the right of the roadway, hitting the embankment and rolling twice. Further investigation is pending.

STUDY OF HEAT DEATHS

Phoenix - A recent state health department review of death certificates found that an average of 29 Arizonans died annually because of heat between 1992 and 2002. The Arizona Dept. of Health Services study found that 356 people died of heatstroke or sunstroke in that period. 41 were from out of state. That total does not include illegal immigrants, who die in large numbers while crossing the southern Arizona desert each year. The study also showed that men were more likely to die of heat exposure than women.

HAPPY 4th of JULY!

LAW ENFORCEMENT WARNING

TriState - As we enter the Independence Day weekend, the abundance of recreational opportunities in our area means that there is always something to do. Whether it is a water sport like boating or skiing, hiking the magnificent nearby mountains, or visiting the resorts along the beautiful Colorado River it is easy to see why so many visitors choose the tristate area as their vacation spot. Law enforcement in the area wants the weekend to be pleasant for our residents and visitor alike. But remember, it only takes a moment for a good time to turn bad.
On the river a flotation device for everyone on board a boat or personal watercraft is a requirement, not a suggestion. Operating a watercraft is a responsibility that must be taken seriously and done only with proper training and equipment. The increase in traffic on our busy roadways means that an extra amount of caution must be taken while driving our vehicles. Inattention, careless operation, and driving too fast for conditions are the leading causes of traffic collisions. Give your self ample time to get to that fireworks display, sporting event, or celebration you have planned. Always wear a safety belt and keep children properly restrained in your vehicle.
Whether you are enjoying the river, or traveling to one of the many other events this Fourth of July holiday, if you drink - don't drive. Driving a motor vehicle OR operating a watercraft under the influence is a serious crime, with serious consequences. Law enforcement agencies will be staffing additional personnel during the holiday weekend with hopes that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time in the country's Hottest Destination.

TUESDAY'S BRUSH FIRE

Needles - Eight fire departments responded to a massive fire in Needles Tuesday night as smoke filled our sky. The fire consumed approximately 40 acres on the north side of the river and then spread to the south side, but was quickly contained to burning brush. Only one structure, which apparently was a small home behind an abandoned bowling alley, burned completely to the ground. With the close proximity to the river, the fire was directed towards the water to run out of fuel quickly. While cleanup efforts continued yesterday, the fire itself was completely contained late Tuesday night. No cause has been determined yet as to the cause of the fire.

HOT YET?

G.S. - Our local weather man, Scott Browne, says our average high in June was 106.4° and our average low was 96.1°. Until last Saturday's sprinkle 6/26 the last moisture we had fall from the sky was April 2nd which was a span of 86 days without any moisture. So when are the monsoons coming, Scott?

FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix - This holiday weekend is sure to send a lot of Arizonans traveling around the state for 4th of July celebrations. As you embark on a long-weekend filled with fireworks, barbeques, swimming and celebration, please also remember that we are deep into our fire season and must continue to exercise safety and good practices with our forests. Thankfully, wildfires started by people are on the decline this year, and Arizonans have been doing a great job as stewards of our forests. While lightening caused the Willow fire, which is approximately 32,000 acres, there are several things we can do to protect our forests and limit the number of human-caused fires in the state. Within a wilderness area, don’t smoke outside or throw your cigarettes outside, don’t light campfires in prohibited areas or use unauthorized equipment, and don’t enter closed areas or use fireworks. As stewards of our forests, we can all do our part to preserve the health of our forests and limit the number of fires in our state. I wish you all a safe and wonderful Independence Day.

NASTY POP-UP STEALS PASSWORDS

Internet - Another nasty new virus surfaced this week. This one uses browser helper objects, or "BHO," to sneak into your system and steal your online banking passwords. The attack affects all modern versions of Internet Explorer. Customers who use a number of the top online banking sites are at risk of falling prey to a new Web-based attack that snatches user IDs and passwords for these sites.
The Trojan is delivered through a malicious pop-up ad that loads a file called "img1big.gif" onto the machine. The file is in fact a compressed Win32 executable that contains the Trojan and a DLL. The DLL is installed on the PC as a BHO (Browser Helper Object), a type of DLL that normally is used to let developers control IE in certain circumstances. When IE runs on a machine infected with the malicious BHO, the file monitors your activities for any sessions with sites that have any of a large number of banking-related strings in them.
So what can I do? At PC Magazine Utility Library, for 5 bucks, you have access to an oldie-but-goodie utility, BHO Cop, which gives you the ability to find out what BHOs are attached to your copy of Internet Explorer, and then empowers you to kill (disable) any BHO you find suspicious. Or you can stop using Internet Explorer altogether.

REAL ESTATE PRICES CONTINUE TO SOAR

G.S. - Why have the prices of lots and homes in Golden Shores risen? One reason is the rule of supply and demand. As the supply of available lots has been decreasing, the demand has continued. The average price for a single-family home has risen to overwhelming prices. Residents that are transplanting from places like California are okay with some of the prices, but locals are extremely reluctant to pay the exhorbant prices some are asking. One of the main concerns right now is housing those with the lower paying jobs currently in the community. But the main concern is that some realtors are encouraging people to jack-up the prices just so they can get bigger commissions. While a few may get rich selling at those higher prices, many buyers may get burned later because the property will not necessarily hold those higher prices.

ONE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT?

Bullhead City - by Luke Boyer - VFW 6306 Aux - Local school boards discussed the possibility of forming one unified school district for the first time at a workshop held June 28 at Mohave Community College. School board members from Topock, as well as other area schools attended. Dr. Ford of Kingman Unified School District said the Kingman schools formed a unified school district three years ago and so far have been working.
Topock School Board President Julia Vasquez said, “In Topock we have some excellent programs for our children, our school is improving, it’s doing very well and the constituency of Topock is telling me that the best interest of our students is to remain an elementary school district.” Principal Brett Agenbroad pointed out that the Kingman Unified School District schools were all located in the city of Kingman.
Rose Vera, Mohave Valley Elementary Board President said the joint session answered a lot of questions her board members had. She also said she did not hear many answers what specific benefits would be created with unification. She said she was happy with the way her district operates.
As no action was taken at the workshop meeting. Individual boards will now take the matter back for discussion.

SENATE TO VOTE ON MARRIAGE JULY 15!

Washington DC - We’ve come a long way from the day when the U.S. Supreme Court held that “the union for life of one man and one woman” was “the sure foundation of all that is stable and noble in our civilization,” and that legislation to that effect was both “wholesome and necessary.” The weekend of Sunday, July 11, has been designated as "Marriage Protection Sunday" by a broad coalition of pro-family groups, including Focus on the Family, Family Research Council, American Family Association and The Center for Arizona Policy. We are requesting that everyone contact their U.S. Senators on Monday, July 12, which has been designated "Call Your Senator Day."
Sen. John McCain remains undecided on whether to support the amendment, and needs to hear from as many Arizonans as possible. Please call or email Sen. John McCain and urge him to sign on as a co-sponsor and then vote in favor of the Marriage Protection Amendment, S.J.RES.30. You can reach him by calling his office at 202-224-2235 or by email at john_mccain@mccain.senate.gov. You can also contact him through our website at www.azpolicy.org. We have delivered more than 21,000 signatures in support of the Amendment to his office.

    WEEKLY FUNNY

First grade...true story: One day the first grade teacher was reading the story of the Three Little Pigs to her class. She came to the part of the story where the first pig was trying to accumulate the building materials for his home. She read,"...and so the pig went up to the man with the wheelbarrow full of straw and said, "Pardon me sir, but may I have some of that straw to build my house?'" The teacher paused then asked the class, "And what do you think that man said?" One little boy raised his hand and said, "I think he said...'Holy crap! A talking pig!'" The teacher was unable to teach for the next 10 minutes.
