ASSAULTS/ARRESTS AT HOOCH'S

G.S. - At around 1:00 Monday morning 7/5, MCSO deputies responded to a fight Hooch's River Grill and contacted the 31-year-old female victim. She reported that a few male subjects entered the business at closing time, wanting drinks. The male subjects became upset when they were informed that it was closing time. They began throwing chairs and fighting. She was hit over the head with a bottle and a 32-year-old male victim (from CA) was knocked off his chair and beaten up. G.S. Fire Department responded and transported both victims to the Needles Hospital where the female victim received stitches to her head wound and the male victim suffered a broken nose and wrist. Deputies contacted the male subjects nearby; in the 4700 block of Monarch. All three subjects, Serafin 21, Emdy 39 and Menie 16, all from the Barstow area, were taken into custody and transported to the Mohave County jail.
Owner Mike Thornten said he doesn't even have the police report as yet. He doesn't want people to think Hooch's is a dangerous place to go. These people just wandered in off the highway during the night.

WEST NILE VIRUS FOUND

Mohave County - Mohave County Public Health has tested a pool of mosquitoes as positive for West Nile Virus in Mohave County. Department Director Patty Mead said there may also be a human case. "We may have a positive case, as well, in the area but we won't find that out until probably Friday. So it means that everybody needs to be following the advice we have been talking about for months now. And that is to make sure that your house is mosquito proof and that you use repellant when outdoors." Mead also said any standing water is a potential breeding ground. "Anything that holds stagnate water for longer than three days is considered a mosquito breeding ground area. For example, even a bowl of water for your dog, if it is sitting there for longer than three days it can start to breed mosquitoes." Mead said they have many resources for residents concerned. "I just want to make sure that the public knows that we have our toll-free number that they can call for more information, 866-409-4099. And then you can also log on to our website www.healthelinks.com. We are updating that daily with new information and it also has all of the information about West Nile Virus to protect you and your family." Mead said that residents need to protect themselves with DEET bug spray.

BODY RECOVERED

Lake Havasu - A 5-day search for Benjaman Roy Addington, allegedly thrown off of a boat, ended Monday evening when Mohave County Sheriffs Deputies were called to Havasu Landing to identify a dead body found by a Dreamcatcher watercraft. MCSO Public Information Officer Trish Carter says they have identified the body as the one they were looking for. The body was recovered Tuesday night about 7:30 p.m. and turned the body over to Lake Havasu Mortuary. The extensive search involved the MCSO dive team, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Department of Public Safety Rangers.

ACCIDENTS ON LAKE HAVASU

Lake Havasu - Reports are in from the accident that occurred on Lake Havasu Friday 6/25 and another that occurred on Saturday. The Mohave County Sheriffs Office, San Bernardino County Sheriffs, and Lake Havasu City Police and Fire Departments responded to the scenes. The yellow flat bottom, a female passenger, was air-lifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas and does not appear to be life-threatening at this point. The Saturday accident involved a man being ejected from his boat and that boat running him over. The Lake Havasu Fire and Emergency Medical Team responded to the scene. There was a man in the water and a boat running around in circles about 100 yards off-shore at Windsor Beach. The boat ran over the victim severing one of his arms.

HOT YET?

G.S. - I must apologize for the misinformation last week. Ever have trouble reading your own notes? Well, here are the corrected stats for June. Our local weatherman, Scott Browne, says that in June our average temperature was 106.7° and the average low was 75.4°. The high in June was 112.9° and the low was 60.1°. There was only a trace of rainfall, just enough to mess up my car the day after I washed it. Browne says our average monsoon start date is July 24th. The National Weather Service predicts above normal heat for July and August but will not comment on rainfall.

FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix - Over the past week, the destructive forces of fire have reminded us about the importance of power conservation. Fire at a transmission substation has reduced the capacity of electricity to flow into Maricopa County, and fires in northern and eastern Arizona threaten other electrical lines. Add in hot temperatures that demand increased air conditioning, and our power demand may occasionally surpass the amount of electricity available to us. Teamwork of citizens helped us to avoid so-called “rolling blackouts”. As a result of everyone’s conservation efforts, reduced demands for electricity have enabled power companies to avoid rolling blackouts. The best way to avoid them as we move into the weekend is to keep up the good work. Some of the ways to conserve energy include: Turning off extra lights and limiting use of appliances during peak hours, set air conditioner thermostats to at least 82 degrees. State government is doing its part. I have asked state employees to raise office thermostats to 82 degrees, use task lighting instead of overhead lighting and turn off all non-essential lights in the buildings. If we as a statewide community all do our part to conserve energy, we can avoid any unwanted power outages during these hot summer months.

SUPERVISORS HIRE ATTORNEY

Kingman - The Mohave County Board of Supervisors, Tuesday, unanimously approved to hire Yavapai County Attorney Chick Hastings to investigate what is being called criminal allegations made by District 3 Supervisor Buster Johnson in an interview with the media. Supervisor Johnson read the original statement he made in the interview and said regarding the two former employees that accused him of sexual harassment, the allegations are a result of a bitter political feud with Supervisors Pete Byers and Tom Sockwell and the County Manager Ron Walker.
Johnson commented, "In my opinion, and I emphasize my opinion, I think this entire exercise is the most irresponsible and wasteful expenditure of this board, which has had more than it's share over the years." The state attorney general's office indicated to the county that it had no interest in the case, therefore the only option available was hiring this case out.

Wi-Fi BECOMES A REALITY

Internet - WiFi stands for Wireless Internet and has reached commodity status. Many new computers now come standard with what is called WiFi chips. But they don't work in Golden Shores -- yet. The industry calls it "802.11 standards". With the influx of low-cost WiFi chips produced by Taiwan manufacturers, the price of 802.11g components is now on the fall. Some people have "said" they were going to bring WiFi into Golden Shores, but so far no one has kept their word. But with the new pricing and severe competition in the big city markets, some companies are starting to expand to the rural communities. The only problem here is our monopolizing telephone company. Although there are now methods of entering the market with using the telephone company. So we can hopefully expect to see the WiFi market open up in G.S. in the next year or so.
These low cost WiFi chips are becoming so common and so cheap that eventually we will probably see them installed in our televisions, radios, watches, and even our telephones will be able to bypass the telephone company and the cellular companies by using the internet. Next thing you know they'll be installing them in people.....

BREAST CANCER ASSISTANCE

Phoenix - The Arizona Institute for Breast Health has issued a Public Service Announcement Campaign across the state to get the word out on the service they provide. Spokeswoman Melissa Kaufman says the AIBH can help the residents in the Tri-State make fully informed decisions. "Helping them understand their prognosis, giving them a second opinion, helping them understand the treatment options and what they have to go through." Kaufman says they have a variety of services including proper nutrition and counseling. "The doctors currently are only in Phoenix, but there have been lots of women that have come throughout Arizona to see the board. Whether they might be getting treatment down here or might want to come see the board." If you have further questions consult http://www.aibh.org or call (480) 860-4200. Dear Heavenly Father, We know You hear our prayers because we belong to You. You bought us with a price we could never pay. We know then if You hear us, You answer us even though we cannot always see or hear the answer, so we know then that You will supply all our needs just like You said so we choose to cast all our cares on You now and receive the truth of Your Word into our spirits.
