Colorado River - Mohave County Sheriff's Waterways deputies responded to the sandbar on the Colorado River Sunday 7/11 evening at around 8:00 p.m. A single passenger Jet Ski accident where Kyle Robert, 16, of Paris, California, was traveling from Topock to Lake Havasu apparently didn't see the sandbar when he wrecked, traveling approximately 60 mph. Deputies transported Robert to the Windsor Beach State Park where paramedics took Robert to the Lake Havasu Regional Hospital as he suffered head trauma.

IDENTIFY THEFT

G.S. - by Bonnie Barker - I recently looked at my desktop icons and saw an icon on there that definitely should not be there. The icon was named "Payment Activity" which further made me curious. I'm not a computer geek, but on investigating the file, it contained the following in the description ...hr \Menu_on Web Event...Quick Summary, pg Quick Summary Payment, etc. The size of this desktop icon was 4.00 KB. It was placed on my desktop on Saturday, July 10th 2004. I am pretty sure it is a program that downloads from the internet to your desktop and then tracks the sites you visit in the hopes of obtaining personal information such as credit cards, etc.
I got an email today from Real Arcade (An internet game site that I subscribe to where you can buy and download their games) asking for my personal information and credit card information. Don't know if this was the result of the above mentioned desktop icon "Payment Activity" tracking my log on to Real Arcade but it is suspicious.
The other email was supposedly from Ebay who never, ever asks for your personal financial information. The email said I had to input all my financial information on a form in the email and send it to a bogus website. I don't happen to have ever given Ebay any credit card numbers, etc. nor do I intend to!
Please be very careful and check your desktop every day to make sure there isn't something on there that shouldn't be there. Watch and don't answer any emails that ask for your credit card numbers and personal information. As a matter of fact, delete those suckers!
Editor's Note: I saw on TV this morning that President Bush has just signed a law requiring mandatory prison time for those convicted of indetity theft and aggravated privacy invasion.

WEATHER WARNING

Desert - If you are new to the desert you should understand that Flash Floods can happen almost instantly in desert washes, even when there are no clouds. When the National Weather Service issues a FLASH FLOOD WATCH, that means to check the weather where you are going and be on the lookout for water across the roadways. If the NWS issues a FLASH FLOOD WARNING, that means water has already been reported in the washes and on the roadways and you should use extreme caution.
You should NEVER attempt to go through water across the roadway. You can be swept away almost instantly. Almost every year in Arizona, people drown because they thought they could make it...
Keep your radio and TV tuned so you can get the latest alerts this time of year. It could save your life.

BREAST CANCER LEGISLATION

National - Important legislation for all women. If there was ever a time when our voices and choices should be heard, this is one of those times. If you are receiving this it's because I think you will take the 30 seconds to go and vote on this issue...and send it on to others you know who will do the same.
There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the "drive-through mastectomy" where women are forced to go home hours after surgery against the wishes of their doctor; still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.
Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support. Last year over half the House signed on.
PLEASE!!!! Sign the petition by clicking on the web site below and help women living with breast cancer get the care they need and deserve!! There is no cost or monetary pledge involved. You need not give more than your name and zip code number. Click Here. This takes about 10 seconds.

FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix - The rainstorms that have come through Arizona in the past week have brought both good news and bad news.
GOOD: Our parched forests needed every drop and the end of fire season has drawn closer.
BAD: With moisture come mosquitoes – and with mosquitoes comes West Nile virus.
Arizona’s West Nile cases have been on the rise even in rural counties, including Mohave County, and the disease has become a statewide issue. All citizens should take certain steps to protect themselves from mosquito-borne illnesses including West Nile:
Eliminate pools of standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
Check your yard for items that can collect water, such as cans, bottles, buckets, jars, old tires, and other containers.
Change the water in flower vases, birdbaths, planters, and animal watering pans at least twice a week.
Repair leaky pipes and outside faucets, and move air conditioner drain hoses frequently.
Wear insect repellent when you go outside at night to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
Wear lightweight clothing that covers the arms and legs when you go out at dawn or dusk or are in a place where mosquitoes are active.
If you have an evaporative cooler, drain it when it’s not in use.
West Nile virus is completely preventable, and each of you can help eliminate it by taking those simple precautions. As the monsoons come and the rains continue, remember to protect yourself and your family so we can shut the door on West Nile virus in Arizona.

The vehicle continued over a 10-foot embankment and came to rest about 40 feet east of the parkway.

  • HIGH ELECTRIC BILLS

Tristate - With high electric bills over the summer months, many people are concerned about how to keep their energy bills down. Joe Salkowski of Unisource Energy made the following suggestion, "One of the things some people use to try and moderate their electric costs are electronic thermostats that allow you to automatically change the temperature when you're away from the house for a longer period of time. We encourage people to limit the difference between the temperature they use when they're in the house and the temperature they use when they're away from the house to three degrees." Salkowski went on to say the easiest way to conserve energy is to just turn up the thermostat and the level that Unisource recommends for their customers is 78 degrees.
