FIRES RAGE IN AREA

BOAT FIRE AT THE MARINA

Topock - On Sunday morning 8/1 around 10:00 a.m. the Golden Shores Fire Department responded to a boat fire call at the Topock Gorge Marina. Operator Larry McAtee had started his boat and put in reverse to backup to the dock to pickup his wife and friends. McAtee said, "I had it in reverse and the engine was running and it suddenly just exploded." McAtee was the only person on the boat at the time and exited the boat. Then the boat started floating across the water near some other boats which caught on fire. The boat ramp attendant, said that McAtee probably didn't open the engine box to allow the vapors to exit and when the vapors built up, it exploded. For additional help, Golden Shores Fire called for assistance and on the scene were Mohave Valley Fire from Mohave Valley, San Bernardino Fire from Needles, and BLM Fire from Lake Havasu City. BLM Fire was only there in case the fire had spread into the brush and to prevent it from becoming a wild brushfire. Mohave County Sheriff deputies were also on the scene.
Firemen were able to prevent the fire from reaching the gasoline pumps and there were no injuries reported at the scene. Officials said Monday that a total of 18 boats were involved in the fire and 16 boats were destroyed. Seven boats were underwater, nine could be towed, and two had only minor damage. The flames did not spread to the shoreline, and it appeared that the oil and gas from the boats did not spread beyond the marina.

FAMILY LOSES ALL IN FIRE

G.S. - On Wednesday 8/4 around 10:30 a.m. the Golden Shores Fire Department responded to a fire call at 5189 El Mirage, the home of Eric Montoya and Rhonda Rickard and her three children. A neighbor across the street said he heard an explosion and looked out the window and the house was engulfed in flames. Mohave Valley Fire Department was called to help with water. The firemen were able to keep the fire from spreading, but could not put the fire completely out and allowed the fire to burn itself out. There were two vehicles, a boat and all their personal belongings lost in the fire. There were no injuries reported.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. The house was a rental. A friend said they had problems with the hot water heater and the landlord told them not to mess with it until they got it fixed. They had been without hot water for about six months. They had visually seen sparks coming from the wires on top of the hot water heater. Montoya also said there were problems with the swamp cooler and they had no cool air. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

HOUSE BURGLARS CAUGHT

Bullhead City - On Tuesday 8/3 at around 6:00 a.m. BHC Police Department responded to a burglary in progress call. The 911 operator indicated that unknown intruders were attempting entry into the residence via a window. The Victim, Sherrie Birch, Christopher Kincade, and 2 children, indicated that she awoke when someone attempted to break her bedroom window from outside. She indicated that she could hear voices and saw a male suspect with a gun. She then stated that three suspects had gained entry into the residence by breaking in the front door.
When Officer Jaen first arrived at the scene he remained outside and ordered all occupants to exit the residence. Officer Jaen had his gun drawn as he was did not know the identity of the suspects. As backup arrived, the occupants and 2 suspects came out. One suspect and a 5-year-old child remained. After numerous additional verbal orders to exit, the 3rd suspect finally complied and was taken into custody. Officers then searched the residence and discovered the 5-year-old child in a bedroom. Another search of the residence was conducted for the weapon that the victim had observed when the suspects entered. JULY WEATHER SUMMARY

G.S. - by Scott Browne, our Local Weatherman
A low temperature of 70.6° occurred on July 3rd. A high temperature of 116.8° occurred on July 12th. The overall averages for July's 31 days created an average low of 81.6° and an average high of 110.9°F. Three days of precipitation occurred on the 14th, 25th and 27th providing .553 inch of rain. Compared to 2003, our temperatures were down, our moisture was up and our high winds were considerably less.
Weather facts: Swamp coolers become ineffecient when the dewpoint is 55° or greater, but what is dewpoint? The dewpoint is the temperature of the air when it is cooked to saturation. When saturation is reached, the air cannot hold any additional moisture and any excess moisture condenses as dew on surfaces such as grass or plants. High humidity can shorten human hair by as much as 2%.

OPINIONS
HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY? -

OPINIONS - are not necessarily the opinion of the Golden Shores eXtra or it's staff. If you have an opinion you would like to put in this publication, please email news@goldenshores.net.

I have lived in Golden Shores for many years and have always declared it to be the best place in the country to live. I suppose it was inevitable that one of my friends would pose a question that asked "there must be something about Golden Shores that you don't like". Well, there is one issue that bothers me alot. Since I walk at night, I enjoy gazing at the sky and watching the stars etc. It has gotten to the point that there are so many high powered yard lights burning from dusk until dawn that it has become nearly impossible to have a clear view of the night skies. Why do people believe that they need all these lights. I can think of only two reasons, one that they want everyone to see what they have and the second that it is for security reasons. The first is self serving and the second, it would seem, would promote the crimes they are trying to avoid by illuminating the areas where goods are being stored. I agree that security is important but why not do what I have chosen to do and have yard lights that are motion activated. This way they illumunate only when someone walks by the beam. I think these people who think the rest of the world wants to be subjected to their lights are selfish and self-centered and I, for one, am tired of it. Maybe the time has come to shut the lights off so we can enjoy the beauty of the night skies that only those who live in the country can enjoy.
It seems those people who light up the night who are the first to complain about high utility costs. Pretty stupid isn't it.
I have no doubt that there will be some people who will continue using yard lights regardless of any reasons put forth to not using them. To those diehard individuals I would ask them to consider using amber lights instead of the obnoxious and annoying white lights.

TOPOCK SCHOOL TAX CREDITS

G.S. - Arizona is fortunate to offer a tax credit on state taxes. Any taxpayer may contribute up to $200.00 per individual or $250.00 per couple to any fee-required extra curricular activity offered at the school. This is a direct credit, not a deduction. That means it is subtracted from taxes you owe and is fully refunded for up to $250.00. For example, if you owe $400.00 for the year in Arizona state income taxes and give $250.00 to a school, you would only owe $150.00 for the tax year. It literally costs you nothing to give the $250.00. It comes back to you as a credit, refund, or reduction.
We urge you to help share this message with all Arizona tax payers, your friends, neighbors and relatives. Any resident of Arizona may take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity to help the students of Topock. For assistance or questions, please call 768-3344.
Sincerely,
Topock Elementary Governing Board & Administration

MEET THE TEACHER NITE at TOPOCK SCHOOL

FOOD BANK CLOSED - REOPENED

Golden Valley - After the food bank of Golden Valley has been operating for 14 years, county officials have pulled a bureacracy stunt and now determined they need a permit and shut them down with a single complaint. The food bank is crying "foul play". Mohave County Department of Public Health Assistant Director Jennifer McNally said, “We can’t say that we closed them down because we didn’t issue a permit to begin with. We did tell them to be a food distribution site they need to get a permit.” McNally said the food bank had an infestation of flies around the produce that was left out. That's why the inspectors shut them down. Pat Bailey, owner of the food bank, said they get their food from the same source as the Golden Shores Baptist Church Food Care program, Westside Food Bank in Phoenix. The food bank has reopened with a 30 day permit.

COURT SAYS OK FOR GOD TO BLESS

Phoenix - A federal court has ruled that the Paradise Valley School cannot restrict religious speech. The ruling says the school district violated the Constitution when it censored school parents’ message to their children: “God Bless, We Love You, Mom & Dad.”
“This is an important victory for free speech because it shows that schools cannot restrict speech just because it is religious,” said Peter Gentala, Legal Counsel for the Center for Arizona Policy and attorney for the Plaintiffs, Paul and Ann Seidman. The Seidmans participated in a fundraiser at their children’s elementary school, which allowed members of the community to buy a tile. The tiles were allowed to carry a special message, and were displayed on the interior walls of the school.
“Tax payer-funded public schools are not religion-free zones,” Gentala said. “When a school says ‘you can share a special message with your loved ones’ it cannot tack on ‘unless you refer to religion,’” Gentala said. “The Seidmans did a courageous thing by refusing to have their religious message turned away.” “We took this stand for our children,” said Ann Seidman.
