HAPPY FRIDAY THE 13th
I-10 CRASH KILLS 4, INJURES 42
Tonopah -
Authorities are reporting 4 dead and 42 other injuries in chain-reaction accidents during a blinding dust storm on Wednesday. About two dozen vehicles, including a passenger bus and 12 tractor-trailers, were involved in crashes on both sides of Interstate 10. There were three separate accidents. Two of them occurred in the Tonopah area, about 45 miles west of Phoenix and the third about 75 miles west of Phoenix. One of the two eastbound lanes of I-10 was still closed Thursday.
The dust storm came in very quickly. "We could see nothing but dust and smoke" upon arriving, said a firefighter.
"It was like something you'd see in a movie. Vehicles were twisted sideways and all the metal everywhere," said Officer Steve Volden, a DPS spokesman. "It was really horrific out there." Several of the vehicles caught fire after the collisions, Volden said.
Officers reported that one of the people who died was in a car that had become wedged under a truck. Another fatality was a truck driver.
U-HAUL TRUCK BURNS
I-40 Exit 9 -
When a U-Haul driver reached the offramp at exit 9, he realized the truck was on fire. Employees of Wendy’s and Pilot came out with fire extinguishers, hit it and it didn’t go out. They heard a pop then a boom, next thing you know the whole thing was on fire. It burned up pretty much everything. There was really nothing in the back of it except some packing blankets. The cause is believed to be just a mechanical failure resulting in overheating which resulted in the fire. The driver was uninjured in the blaze. A wrecker drove down from Las Vegas to collect the remains.

HIGH TEMPS- STORMS
TriState -
If you've been online the last several days and if you have Weatherbug, you have received the high temperature alerts. The National Weather Service has issued severe weather warnings, however not due to rain. On Wednesday several people in the area reported temperatures in excess of 120°, although the official high was only 118°. 125° has been reported in Death Valley. ALWAYS drink plenty of water or non-alcoholic beverages. Wear light colored clothing and minimize the time you spend outdoors.
The storms began on Wednesday. We saw quite an electrical show on Wednesday evening, better than some fireworks shows. Moisture and thunderstorms are predicted thru Saturday. As I type, another storm is approaching Golden Shores...
5th WEST NILE CASE
Mohave County -
The Mohave County Department of Public Health reports an additional case of West Nile Virus, bringing the total number of cases to five. This case is a man in his seventies who lives near Fort Mohave. However, he had recently been outside the Mohave County area, so the exact place of exposure is unknown. The man is currently hospitalized in Bullhead City.
Patty Mead, Health Director said it becomes more important for people to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites and to remove standing water from their property. I want to remind everyone to use mosquito repellent with DEET when outdoors and limit time outdoors from dusk through dawn.
Other ways to reduce your risk:
Empty or discard items that collect water such as bottles, jars, buckets, old tires, and other containers.
Change water in birdbaths, planters, kid’s pools and animal watering pans at least twice a week.
Repair leaky pipes and faucets and reposition air conditioner drain hoses frequently.
Fix or install window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out of your home.
To report areas of standing water, contact the Public Health office at (800) 735-3711 ext. 4301. For more information, visit www.HealthELinks.com or call the toll free emergency information line at 1-866-409-4099.
BREAKING NEWS
N.J. -
New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey resigns his post, citing an extramarital homosexual affair.
SOUTHWEST GAS EMPLOYEE IN COURT
Bullhead City -
A former Bullhead City woman who worked at Southwest Gas appeared in Bullhead City Justice Court Wednesday morning 8/11 charged with theft. Jennifer Lou Stagner, 42, is charged with one count of felony theft and was released on her own recognizance. Stagner allegedly stole about $93,000 from Southwest Gas Corp. where she was employed as an office supervisor.
The theft was discovered by an internal audit when a shortage of deposits did not match the amount of money posted. The company has recovered about 70 percent of the money. The thefts occurred between July, 2003, and Nov, 2003. Stagner reportedly had left the area and moved to Amarillo, Texas. If tried and convicted of the theft charge, Stagner could face up to 12 and a half years in prison.

FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix -
Governor Janet Napolitano has decided to reorganize the state into five separate homeland security regions.
State officials are calling it a regional strategy to fight and prevent terrorism. Each security region will have a council of ten members consisting of first responders, police, fire, and local officials.
“Common sense would tell you that those first responders would be the ones having to work together in any kind of a mess or disaster situation, which could be terrorist caused or could be naturally caused, you don’t know,” explained Napolitano last week.
It is up to each of the five security regions to develop their own specialized plan.

STATE RECOVERS UNPAID COURT DEBTS
Phoenix -
The Arizona Supreme Court has instituted a new program aimed at recovering millions of dollars in unpaid and overdue court debt from across the state. The Traffic Ticket Enforcement Assistance Program will be enforced by the Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles, and will begin to halt vehicle registration renewal when there is more than $200 in outstanding court obligations, or when there has been a failure to appear on a traffic citation. This program is the latest part of the larger statewide collection effort FARE (Fines/Fees and Restitution and Enforcement) that has already yielded $2.5 million in the last ten months.

SCHOOL LOSES PRINCIPAL
Lake Havasu City -
Tuesday the principal of Smoketree Elementary School in Lake Havasu City lost consciousness in her office and was later pronounced dead at Havasu Regional Medical Center.
Principal Bonnie Hoyt was 35-years-old and no cause of death has been released at this time. Gail Malay, Superintendent of Lake Havasu Unified School District #1 said, "The school district is in shock that one of our youngest principals died today. We're doing everything we can to help both the staff and students deal with the grief associated with a sudden death." Hoyt had been having medical difficulties over the past week. "What I had heard is she had had some headaches and her neck was bothering her. She was 35-years-old, and the cause of death is unknown at this time.
MAN STABBED, LEFT AT MOTEL
Bullhead City -
Police were called to the Riverfront Resort Motel on Highway 95 early Sunday morning after a stabbing victim managed to stagger to a common site on the property. According to Lieutenant Steve Smith, the 39-year old victim, identified as James Kellems, Jr., was found dead in a chair in a front room at the Motel around 5:30 a.m. No suspects have been identified in the case nor motives determined. The case is still under investigation by Bullhead City Police.
HUGE WIN IN CALIFORNIA!
CA -
Today the California Supreme Court unanimously agreed that the decision of San Francisco’s mayor to issue more than 4,000 marriage licenses was unlawful. This is a major defeat for the effort to redefine marriage, coming as it does from a liberal court in a state that is not only very pro-homosexual, but is also large and influential. It’s almost like winning a huge basketball game on the opponent’s home court. The shock waves from this resounding decision are still reverberating across the nation … you could almost sense the shock and consternation in the voice of CNN’s news commentators. The majority of the Court (five out of seven) also held that, because the licenses were illegally issued, the 4,000-plus sham marriage licenses are null and void and of no legal effect whatsoever. www.azpolicy.org

TOPOCK SCHOOL TAX CREDITS
G.S. -
Arizona is fortunate to offer a tax credit on state taxes. Any taxpayer may contribute up to $200.00 per individual or $250.00 per couple to any fee-required extra curricular activity offered at the school. This is a direct credit, not a deduction. That means it is subtracted from taxes you owe and is fully refunded for up to $250.00. For example, if you owe $400.00 for the year in Arizona state income taxes and give $250.00 to a school, you would only owe $150.00 for the tax year. It literally costs you nothing to give the $250.00. It comes back to you as a credit, refund, or reduction.
We urge you to help share this message with all Arizona tax payers, your friends, neighbors and relatives. Any resident of Arizona may take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity to help the students of Topock.
For assistance or questions, please call 768-3344.
Sincerely,
Topock Elementary Governing Board & Administration
MEET THE TEACHER NITE at TOPOCK SCHOOL

WEEKLY PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father,
Lord God, we know You have written in Your Word that Your Grace is sufficient, that Your strength is made perfect in weakness. Cause Your strength to rise up in us that we may be able to say with Paul, 'I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet it is not I but Christ living in me, the life I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me' then we can say He is strong in me!
We pray and ask these things in the Name of Jesus. Amen.
If you believe this prayer, please continue...
