MORE FIRES !
MONSOONS CONTINUE TO THUNDER
TriState -
Although the National Weather Service (NWS) was predicting a week ago we were going to dry out for a few days, the monsoons have not let up. It seems that almost ever day isolated thunderstorms have been a continuous threat to the TriState area. NWS has severe thunderstorm warnings as well as a flash flood watches and warnings almost daily. Even as I write this article, storms are building all around. Many washes and streets have been affected throughout the tri-state area.
Recent rains were responsible for the indefinite closure of Death Valley National Park in the Mojave Desert. Storms that hit the park over the weekend have been responsible for two deaths as well as flooding that washed cars off roads and sent debris into washes. A rollover on Interstate 40 on Thursday morning was also attributed to the storms.
Thursday morning's rain caused Sacramento Wash to run at 3-4 feet and was closed most of the day.
HOUSE LIGHTNING FIRE
G.S. -
As we awoke to the storms on Thursday morning, the Golden Shores Fire Department was busy with a call they received at around 7:00 a.m. on Pima Parkway. The fire is believed to have been started by lightning, but was under the house. Firemen had to cut a hole in the floor. There was no other damage to the house and no one was injured.
About the time they finished with that fire, G.S. Fire responded to Seranno's Nursery down at the Warm Springs Wash where lightning had struck a tree and resulted in a fire. Firemen were also able to extenguish that fire and there was no damage to structures and no injuries.
NWS is still predicting a "drying out" but the air is moist and unstable and, therefore, unprecidtable. ALWAYS keep an eye out for storms and NEVER cross a wash that is flooded.

HOUSE ON PINTA BURNS
G.S. -
On Saturday morning 8/14 at around 9:00 a.m. the Golden Shores Fire Department responded to a fire call at 4830 Pinta. There was smoke and flames upon their arrival. The firemen on the scene said this was a "better built wood house" which would not burn so quickly as some of the others. Firemen were able to extenguish the fire before the outside of the home was destroyed. The fire started in the back bedroom, but the cause is unknown and still under investigation. The owners were not at home and there was no electricity on at the house, so it was obviously not an electrical fire.
CHURCH VANDALIZED
|
G.S. -
Pastor Bruce Daniel arrived at Golden Shores Community Baptist Church on Tuesday morning 8/17 to find a broken beer bottle and a big rock about 6" in diameter had been thrown throught the stained glass window in the front of the church. The Mohave County Sheriff's Office was on the scene to take a report, but said they can't take fingerprints from a rock, but said they are investigating some local valdalism crimes.
The big question is, "Why would anyone do this to a church, any church?" One would have to be a very low-life individual to do this kind of vandalism. If you have any knowledge of this or see anything suspicious, please call the church at 768-2515 or the sheriff's office at 758-0700.

RATTLESNAKES ARROUSED
G.S. -
The Golden Shores Fire Department was called to assist the sheriff's office on Sunday night with the removal of a Mohave Green rattler from a trailer. According to fire chief, Jim Boyle, a biologist at the gas company says there are some green rattlesnakes in this area, but there are no Mohave Greens in this area. The Mohave Green is the most dangerous rattle snake in the country.
Here is an edited statement from one local resident: "Bob and I encountered by a 3 foot Diamond Back rattlesnake yesterday. We were getting into our car. The snake was coiled up under the car ready to strike. I (Judy) heard him (the snake) but Bob could not. Our dog could both hear and see the snake. We wanted to shoot the snake, but our gun jammed. As time went by waiting for help from 911, the snake tried to go under our house. G.S. Fire Dept showed up and said just the night before they were called on a Mohave Green. I believe we need to be more cautious. I just thank God that Bob did not get bit because the snake was ready to attack Bob." Judy Wright
Chief Boyle said, "If you need help with snake removal, give us a call."

FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix -
As school begins throughout Arizona, I am doing my homework to ensure every child enters our classrooms safe, healthy and ready to learn.
One of the most important ways adults can prepare young children for academic success is to read aloud to them for just 15 minutes a day. Reading fosters high self-esteem, develops language skills, improves test scores, and builds the foundation for educational and personal accomplishments.
Education is absolutely essential to promote the best quality of life for all Arizonans, and literacy is the key. There is no substitute. In fact, literacy training is so important that the American Medical Association has suggested that all doctors prescribe "reading to children" to encourage healthy development.
As I have said before, Arizona must be more than a great state to grow old in. It must also be a great state to grow up in.
Please don't hesitate to contact my office at (800) 253-0883 or visit my website at www.governor.state.az.us.

MAN ARRESTED FOR ARGUING WITH WIFE
G.S. -
Late Saturday 8/14 evening Mohave County Sheriff's deputies arrested Daniel Burt Bryant, 32, of Golden Shores, for disorderly conduct/domestic violence, misdemeanor. Approximately 10:25 pm, deputies responded to the 13400 block of Alturas Road and contacted the 36-year-old female victim. The victim reported that Bryant, her husband, became very argumentative with her. Bryant was taken into custody. That'll teach him to argue with his wife!

CAUSE OF DEATH DETERMINED
Lake Havasu City -
We reported last week the tragic death of Lake Havasu City elementary school principal Bonnie Hoyt after she lost consciousness in her office and was later pronounced dead at Havasu Regional Medical Center.
According to Mohave County Medical Examiner Don Nelson, the determined cause of death was two different things.
“We had two major findings; pulmonary embolism and blunt-force head trauma. Either of which, in and of themselves, could have been lethal. She struck her head pretty hard. Because of that, I'm leaning towards giving her the benefit of the doubt that, had she not struck her head, she may have survived the other medical problems. Obviously, there's no way for me to prove that,” said Nelson. Funeral services for the 35-year old Hoyt were held last Saturday afternoon.
TERROR ALERT FOR MEXICAN BORDER
Tucson -
If you are headed for the Mexican border, be aware that an alert has been issued along the Mexico border for a suspected Al-Qaida member who may be trying to cross the border through Arizona or Texas.
According to authorities, 29-year-old Adnan G. El Shukrijumah, who also goes by the names Adnan G. El Shukri Jumah, Abu Arif, Ja'far Al-Tayar, Jaffar Al-Tayyar, Jafar Tayar and Jaafar Al-Tayyar, is suspected of being an al-Qaida cell leader and has been wanted in the United States since 2003.
El Shukrijumah occasionally wears a beard, has a pronounced nose and is asthmatic, according to the FBI's Web site.
El Shukrijumah speaks English and carries a Guyanese passport, according to authorities. However, the suspected terrorist might also try to enter the United States with a Saudi, Canadian or Trinidadian passport.
The Rewards For Justice Program is offering a reward of up to $5 million for information leading directly to the capture of El Shukrijumah. El Shukrijumah should be considered armed and dangerous.
CRASH KILLS 3 ON US 93
Wikieup -
Around 7:00 p.m. on Sunday evening 8/15 a five-vehicle collision on U.S. 93 between Wickenburg and Kingman left three people dead and a fourth seriously injured.
The accident occurred about 23 miles north of Wikieup. The Department of Public Safety says a car with four people inside was attempting to pass another vehicle when it collided head-on with a utility truck.
DPS says the car then struck two other vehicles, which in turn rear-ended a fifth vehicle. Three of the people in the car that hit the truck were killed; the fourth person was seriously hurt.
At least three of the victims were from Phoenix.
CAR THIEF CAUGHT AT WALMART
Bullhead City -
BHC Police Department has arrested Steven Gallegos Rodriguez, 21 years of age, in connection with multiple vehicle thefts and burglaries of vehicles. A multi-agency investigation began in early August involving Rodriguez and has been linked to at least five stolen vehicles from Laughlin Nevada, two thefts from Bullhead City and at least one from Tribal jurisdictions. Rodriguez was arrested on 8/18 at WalMart after being picked up for shoplifting a T-Shirt.
Suspect Rodriguez would steal the vehicles, strip the audio/visual equipment and any personal property left in the vehicle by the owners. He would then leave the vehicles abandoned in the surrounding area. At the time of this press release Suspect Rodriguez has been linked to approximately $100,000 worth of stolen vehicles. Most of the vehicles he stole were Honda’s or Acura's.

TOPOCK SCHOOL TAX CREDITS
G.S. -
Arizona is fortunate to offer a tax credit on state taxes. Any taxpayer may contribute up to $200.00 per individual or $250.00 per couple to any fee-required extra curricular activity offered at the school. This is a direct credit, not a deduction. That means it is subtracted from taxes you owe and is fully refunded for up to $250.00. For example, if you owe $400.00 for the year in Arizona state income taxes and give $250.00 to a school, you would only owe $150.00 for the tax year. It literally costs you nothing to give the $250.00. It comes back to you as a credit, refund, or reduction.
We urge you to help share this message with all Arizona tax payers, your friends, neighbors and relatives. Any resident of Arizona may take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity to help the students of Topock.
For assistance or questions, please call 768-3344.
Sincerely,
Topock Elementary Governing Board & Administration
