MURDERS IN GOLDEN SHORES
MURDERER SHOOTS 3, THEN SELF
G.S. -
Mohave County Sheriff's deputies responded Sunday morning 8/22 at around 6:15 a.m. to a report of two bodies at 4723 Monarch Drive. Deputies observed a male body lying in front of the residence near the roadway and a female body lying in the driveway near a vehicle. As deputies investigated, they discovered an additional male body inside the residence. The investigation determined that all three victims suffered multiple gun shot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives determined a suspect and an Attempt-to-Locate was issued for the suspect and his vehicle to local area law enforcement. That evening, Fort Mohave Tribal Police Officers observed the vehicle traveling on County Route 1 and conducted a traffic stop. MCSO arrived and as they approached the vehicle, the officers heard a shot fired from within the suspect's truck. Investigation determined that the man died of a self-inflicted gun shot wound. The suspect was reportedly out with the victims and the 4 were seen at local bars on Saturday night. Some neighbors said they had heard an undetermined number of gunshots several hours before the bodies were discovered, but did not call the sheriff because "the people at that house were commonly rowdy and sometimes set off fireworks." One local resident said he heard officers talking about the incident being execution style or biker related, but that is unverified. MCSO detectives are still knocking doors around the neighborhood asking questions.
The victims are identified as Carol Ann Applequist, 45, of Lake Havasu City, Rae Sean Emdy, 39, of Santa Monica, CA, and Timothy Quarters, age unknown, of Golden Shores. The dead shooter is identified as Travis Neil Thames, 73, of Golden Shores.
INDECENT EXPOSURE
G.S. -
Mohave County Sheriff's deputies arrested Trinidad Rodriguez Martinez, 32, of Golden Shores, Tuesday 8/24 afternoon for indecent exposure, a felony. On Monday 8/23 approximately 5:15 p.m., deputies responded to an indecent exposure report in the 12900 block of Apache Parkway and contacted the 14-year-old female victim. The victim reported that while she was walking home a vehicle stopped near her and the male driver flashed her and drove away. On Tuesday, at about 3:50 p.m. further investigations led deputies to contact Martinez at Highway 95 and Camp Mohave. During conversations with Martinez he denied flashing the victim. Martinez was transported and booked into the Mohave County Jail.

6th CASE OF WEST NILE
Mohave County -
A sixth case of West Nile Virus has been confirmed by the Mohave County Department of Public Health.
Health Department officials say a male in his 40s in the Mohave Valley area has a case of West Nile Fever as opposed to meningitis or encephalitis. According to the Center for Disease Control, approximately 10 percent of Arizona's reported cases this year have suffered from West Nile Fever. Mosquito exposure is believed to have been local, as the victim had no recent travel history. Previous cases of West Nile Virus have been confirmed in humans, mosquitoes, and a horse in Mohave Valley.
FOGGING BEGINS SOON
G.S. -
Areas of west Mohave County are being identified and mapped in advance of a campaign to apply pesticide that will kill mosquitoes whose populations are infected with West Nile Virus and capable of transmitting the virus to humans.
Federal funds from the Centers for Disease Control flowing through the Arizona department of Health Services will employ a Chicago-based company to mount a ground fogging campaign, currently planned to begin the week of August 30.
“It doesn't cause a problem for animals or children playing outside but we will be requesting that during the time of fogging that people and their family pets stay indoors,” said County Health Director Patty Mead.
“Each truck has the capacity in an eight hour shift to do about 40 to 60 square miles and they go about 10 to 12 miles an hour down the street.”
County officials are planning to fog a large area extending from Golden Shores into Mohave Valley and parts of Bullhead City. There is concern about stagnant water mosquito breeding ground in the Topock Marsh, federal land that the county cannot spray.
“We're going to really be doing a massive effort at educating the public about what to expect, what times, what streets, where the fogging will be conducted each evening,” Mead said.
Mead said concerned and curious citizens can call the Public Health Department's hotline at 1-800-858-7378 or the information will also be posted on the website at www.HealthELinks.com.

FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix -
This week we celebrate an exciting milestone in Arizona's history. On Monday I signed a bill into law that invests state funding in voluntary full-day kindergarten at Arizona's public schools. Within five years, I hope to secure the funding to enable every Arizona school to offer full-day kindergarten as an option for parents, but this year we started with 130 schools with the highest number of students living in poverty.
Many schools offer full-day kindergarten, but without state funding they either charge tuition or pull money from other worthy classroom projects to make it happen. This is a choice that no parent or school should have to make. When the phase-in of full-day kindergarten funding is completed, no parent will have to, and every parent will have this option.
To ensure that the 130 schools receiving full-day kindergarten funding are maximizing the benefit of these dollars, I have invited representatives to participate in full-day kindergarten summits I'm hosting this fall. Findings from these summits will be shared with schools statewide.
Please don't hesitate to contact my office at (800) 253-0883 or visit my website at www.governor.state.az.us.

The Police Department received information today that missing 6-year-old William Smith has been located and returned to his father. On August 3rd the Bullhead City Police Department asked for the communities help in locating William Handsome Smith, 6 years of age. On August 25th the Bullhead City Police Department received information that the child has been returned to his natural father. Information indicates that Al Smith had William and was willing to give him back. Al Smith was in San Bernardino California and arranged to return him to his natural father. The boy is reported to be in good physical health.

Bullhead City -
On a tip received on August 18th, Bullhead City police discovered a 33-pound marijuana plant growing in a backyard garden in the 1600 block of De Angelis Road. They spotted the plant over the fence growing among corn and sunflowers, in an apparent attempt to camouflage. A search warrant was obtained and the plant was removed booked into evidence. Portions were sent to the Department of Public Safety lab for analysis. Possible charges could include cultivation of marijuana, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, all felonies.
FUGITIVE HARP CAUGHT & KILLED
Kingman -
Bradley Virgil Harp was shot and killed Saturday during a gun battle with Mohave County Sheriff’s Deputies in the desert. The autopsy, which according to Kingman Police Spokesman Lt. Dean Bryce, was conducted in Maricopa County, because of the involvement of Mohave County employees (the deputies) in the death. “The autopsy was conducted today at 10 o-clock,” said Bryce. “It was determined by the medical examiner of Maricopa County that the cause of death was multiple gun shot wounds. The total was five gunshot wounds to the torso of the suspect.” Bryce said deputies fired about twenty rounds from a variety of weapons including AR-15 and Mini-14 semi-automatic assault weapons as well as Shotguns.

DOG ATTACKS CHILD
Bullhead City -
The Police Department issued a citation late last week to a dog owner whose dog attacked a 10-year-old girl. “Unfortunately when the door was answered, the dog leapt out of the door and attacked the little girl. There were injuries to her hands and arms so her mother took her to Western Arizona Regional Medical Center. The dog is currently at Animal Control in quarantine,” said Bullhead City Police spokeswoman Carrie Conner.
The owners of the pit bull were issued citations for dog at large, and no license.
According to Conner, additional charges may be filed at a later date.

TOPOCK SCHOOL TAX CREDITS
G.S. -
Arizona is fortunate to offer a tax credit on state taxes. Any taxpayer may contribute up to $200.00 per individual or $250.00 per couple to any fee-required extra curricular activity offered at the school. This is a direct credit, not a deduction. That means it is subtracted from taxes you owe and is fully refunded for up to $250.00. For example, if you owe $400.00 for the year in Arizona state income taxes and give $250.00 to a school, you would only owe $150.00 for the tax year. It literally costs you nothing to give the $250.00. It comes back to you as a credit, refund, or reduction.
We urge you to help share this message with all Arizona tax payers, your friends, neighbors and relatives. Any resident of Arizona may take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity to help the students of Topock.
For assistance or questions, please call 768-3344.
Sincerely,
Topock Elementary Governing Board & Administration
