SINCERE APPRECIATION

by Lucile "Luke" Boyer - To the community organizations of Golden Shores, VFW 6306 and Auxiliaries, VFW District 8, VFW Dept. of Arizona, friends and neighbors. All of a sudden I found myself in the hospital on Aug. 28. My husband and family paced the floor outside the operating room for more than 6 hours. Since that time, cards, flowers and get well wishes came in from all over. One thing I'll never forget is the big get well cards made by the kids at Topock Elementary School. This was the sugar that made the medicine go down. I am home now and recovering from a life changing surgery. Doctor's have told me I do not have to give up my writing for the community. I'll pick up where I left off soon. My family and I wish to extend our appreciation for all your concern, cards, flowers and telephone calls.

Deputies at the intersection of the crime in Lakewood California were flagged down. Suspect Fernandez fled the scene. The accomplices were involved in a shooting with the deputy and one of the suspect’s accomplices died from injuries. FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix - I'm told stories about health insurance premiums being raised to the point where small business owners can no longer afford to provide coverage. Sole proprietor's insurance premiums are often unaffordable because of a pre-existing medical condition. These people feel they have nowhere to turn. That's why I've made health care coverage a priority this year. Healthcare Group of Arizona now plans to expand into rural areas across the state, providing much-needed help to employers, employees and their families. It brings new options and flexibility to employees with varying health care needs. People without health insurance often go without preventive care and are more at risk for serious medical conditions. Every taxpayer in Arizona pays a price when people go uninsured. If you think you or someone you know may quality for coverage through Healthcare Group of Arizona, call 800-545-0676 or go to www.healthcaregroupaz.com to find out more about this program. I believe that together, we can make a difference in the health of our residents and our economy.
Please don't hesitate to contact my office at (800) 253-0883 or visit my website at www.governor.state.az.us.

BUSTER TO SERVE ANOTHER TERM

With no challengers from another party, Johnson has been re-elected to another four-year term as Mohave County Supervisor for district 3, which includes Lake Havasu City. Zalewski was reportedly not very nice and sent some "not so veiled" words to his opponent. Johnson thanked his supporters and said he is looking forward to getting back to work on the issues facing Mohave County.

WARNING: COUNTERFEIT CASH

Bullhead City - Search warrants were executed and counterfeit money seized in Laughlin last week. However, residents and merchants are still warned to check the bills that they receive carefully. Assistant Special Agent Ken Huffer of the Secret Service’s Phoenix office said, "If there is no suspect information available, the individual should take the money to their bank and the bank can follow their standardized reporting process. If, however, there is information on the person who passed the bill, law enforcement should be contacted immediately." "Unfortunately, other than reporting the problem, there is little recourse available when funny money is passed on to you. “If you discover that while you’re still in the merchant, you can go right back to the counter and say, ‘Excuse me, but I question this bill,’ and most merchants will make good on that,” Huffer explained. Huffer went on to point out, however, that if you leave the establishment prior to discovering the bill, merchants are under no obligation to replace it. Authorities are continuing their investigation.

Some of the methamphetamine was packaged for sale. Suspect Dykstra is a convicted felon thus making it illegal for him to possess a firearm.

POPCORN GETS POPPED

Lake Havasu City - In connection with the murder of Lake Havasu City resident Cynthia Trumbull about two weeks ago, police have arrested 23 year-old Kevin James “Popcorn” Roberts for felony burglary and tampering with evidence in connection with the murder. Police say that Roberts has admitted to entering the home of Trumbull and removing her purse, but claims Trumbull was already dead. In a statement released by Cassens Wednesday Roberts was said to have removed $1.40 from the purse before disposing of it. Police are not saying Roberts is a suspect in the murder, but are classifying him as a person of interest. The Trumbull investigation continues and authorities are still asking anyone with information about the murder to please come forward by calling Silent Witness at 854-TIPS.

PHOENIX SHUTS DOWN PORNOGRAPHY

Phoenix - The Center for Arizona Policy Congratulates the City of Phoenix for leading the way on shutting down pornography access at its public libraries. In 1999, following the attempted molestation of a child at the Phoenix Public Library by a man viewing pornography, CAP was able to draft and help pass a bill that amended Arizona law to require public libraries to protect minors from Internet pornography. Pornography is often used by child molesters to lower the inhibitions of potential victims. Finally, the City of Phoenix is taking steps to prevent public libraries from being used as pornographic bookstores by pedophiles and rapists. As always, the ACLU and librarians who are loyal to the American Library Association’s “Bill of Rights” are squawking that pornography should be given to children if it is available at the library. The City of Phoenix is standing firm, and other communities are watching and considering what they can do. Center for Arizona Policy Legal Counsel Peter Gentala has sent a letter to the City of Phoenix offering our free legal assistance to defend the City’s new policy, if it is challenged by the ACLU or ALA in court.

COLORADO RIVER PROTECTION PACT

AP-Phoenix - Interior Secretary Gale Norton has signed an agreement with representatives of Arizona, Nevada and California to protect wildlife habitat on the Colorado River and aid native species. The Lower Colorado River Multi-Species Conservation Program will create 8,100 acres of riparian, marsh and backwater habitat for about 27 species, six of which are endangered. The program is designed to protect habitat between Lake Mead and the U.S.-Mexico border while ensuring enough water is available and power operations using Colorado River water can continue. The river supplies water and power to 20 million people in Arizona, Nevada and California. Trees and plants will be planted along the river to restore the diversity of habitat, which has been harmed by low water levels. It has yet to be determined where the water will come from to sustain the restored habitats. The federal government will pay for half of the 50-year program's estimated $620 million cost. California will cover about $155 million, with Arizona and Nevada paying roughly $77.5 million each, said Bob Walsh of the Bureau of Reclamation.

MOTHER ENTERS PLEA IN BABY DEATH

Kingman - A plea agreement has been entered in the case against a Bullhead City woman who was charged in the December, 2002 death of her eight-month-old daughter. Amanda Macias, 22, has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of child abuse, while a first-degree murder charge was dismissed. Macias could get probation but also faces up to five years in prison when sentenced October 8 by Mohave County Superior Court Judge Steven F. Conn. The plea agreement requires Macias to testify in the trial of Luis Macias, 22, her ex-husband. Police reports indicate Amanda admitted shaking the baby a month before she died, and that her husband admitted he shook the baby the night their daughter was hospitalized. She died four days later. A medical examiner said the baby suffered a skull fracture, bruising of the brain and eye socket injuries - consistent with “Shaken Baby Syndrome.”
