BLACK SMOKE POURS FROM HOUSE FIRE
G.S. -
Wednesday morning 9/22 at around 9:00 a.m. the Golden Shores Fire Department responded to a call at the corner of Cochise and Arivaipa, the home of Jeffrey Greer. By the time fire units arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames along with two boats. Witnesses at the scene said there was a dog inside the house that perished in the fire. Fortunately the wind was from the north and there are no other structures to the south of the lot and firemen were able to quickly prevent the fire from spreading. Southwest Gas and Mohave Electric were also called to the scene. A neighbor said she heard an explosion and looked out the window and saw the fire. A realtor was at another corner of the scene and saw the fire starting. No one knew what caused the fire. The house was a total loss.

Luhnow was initially transported to Needles Hospital and later air lifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas where she is listed in critical condition. The truck was occupied by two females. The female passenger was transported to Needles Hospital with back injuries and the female driver of the truck was uninjured. The highway was closed for about an hour. The motorcycle was towed from the scene. The accident is still under investigation.

FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix -
Today I want to focus on mentoring programs that can enrich and sustain the lives of our youth. All children need nurturing to reach their potential. Unfortunately, not all children have access to such support due to economic, health or family circumstances. My mentoring initiative was launched earlier this year to encourage state employees and citizens to volunteer as mentors to school-aged youth. The executive order I signed allows state employees to use one hour of flex time per week to mentor children in school. Large and small businesses around Arizona have donated their time and resources as well.
Mentoring is a life-changing experience for both mentors and youth by fostering academic, vocational and social development. We need more people to empower youth, to increase their opportunities and to help them achieve their goals.
Arizona’s youth will play a critical role in our state’s future. Mentor a child today -- one hour a week can change a life forever. Please visit www.azmentors.org and click on 'Program Listings' or call Dana Phelps at River Valley H.S. 788-1521.
Please don't hesitate to contact my office at (800) 253-0883 or visit my website at www.governor.state.az.us.

SHERIFF TOM SAYS "HELP"
Kingman -
Sheriff Sheahan said he has recently lost four officers to better paying jobs offered by other departments. He said that leaves him with 14 to 16 vacancies. The Sheriff told county supervisors that recent pay increases for the Kingman Police Department have made matters worse. Mohave County officials are working to develop a compensation package that will help Sheriff Sheahan better recruit and retain law enforcement officers.
Sheahan said, "It's dangerous for the public and it's also dangerous for our officers to be out there because they don't have the backup that they need. We need to address this issue immediately."
County Manager Ron Walker said, “I think we should be able to come back to you within 30 days with an immediate remedy."

MARINE ROLLS JEEP
Goffs, CA -
A U.S. Marine was heading back to the base at 29 Palms after a weekend in Las Vegas when he rolled his Jeep on Sunday. California Highway Patrol spokesman said, “He claims he fell asleep and ran off the road.” “When he woke up, he was already in the dirt. He tried to regain control, was unable to, lost control in the desert and rolled his Jeep. He was not wearing a seatbelt, and he was fully ejected. Right now, he’s in critical condition.” The Marine was airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas from the scene of the crash, approximately 10 miles west of US 95 on Goffs Rd.
NEVADA MAN DIES IN ROLLOVER
N.W. AZ -
A Henderson, NV man, Keith Wright, 33, was killed in a single vehicle accident early Friday in northern Arizona. The Department of Public Safety press release stated Wright was southbound on U.S. 93 when he lost control of his 2002 Ford pickup truck about 12:23 a.m. DPS said the vehicle left the highway before Wright overcorrected bringing the pickup back across the highway before it rolled in the median. DPS officials reported Wright suffered massive head trauma and died after he was transported to University Medical Center in Las Vegas.
MAN DIES ON BULLHEAD PARKWAY
Bullhead City -
Last Thursday evening 9/16 an 85-year-old man was killed in a collision with a pickup truck on Bullhead Parkway. Bullhead PD spokesperson Carrie Conner reported that Theodore Glen Tollefson sat at a stop sign at the intersection of Adobe and the parkway shortly before a southbound truck approached. Tollefson apparently gunned the engine, pulling out in front of the truck, and paid with his life. Conner said the driver of the blue Daewoo may have failed to yield and he just didn’t use good judgment entering the roadway. There’s also a possibility that the victim had a medical event prior to impact. No cause of death was determined at the scene. Tollefson’s wife, who was in the passenger seat of the Daewoo, was transported to Western Arizona Regional Medical Center with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.
OPINIONS
HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY? -
OPINIONS - are not necessarily the opinion of the Golden Shores eXtra or it's staff.
If you have an opinion you would like to put in this publication, please email news@goldenshores.net.
I dont think many of you knew the 3 people that were murdered in your town on August 21, 2004. I knew 2 of them, 1 better than the other. Timothy Quarters was a friend you all should have had. You never had to guess where you stood with him, there were no games. I will miss both of them forever but especially my friend Truck. This world will never be the same with him gone and all I can keep thinking is what a waste.
