MURDER/SUICIDE ENDS AT DAM

Hoover Dam - A couple that went to Las Vegas from Maine/New Hampshire ended in murder in Las Vegas and suicide at Hoover Dam. Las Vegas Metro Police received a 9-1-1 call and were told they would find a body in a particular room of the Treasure Island Hotel and that the caller was going to kill himself. Hotel security went to the room described by the man and discovered the body of an adult female. The woman appeared to have been beaten and strangled. The Clark County Medical Examiner's Office is conducting an autopsy to determine the official cause of death of the victim, identified as Rebecca Roux, 27, of Sanford, Maine. Roux's boyfriend, Lawrence Joyce, 34, of New Hampshire was spotted at Hoover Dam soon after. One of the police officers saw an individual sitting on the wall on the Arizona side of the Dam and his vehicle was parked in the roadway. An officer started talking to the man and asked him to get off the wall. He told the officer that he had just killed his girlfriend in Las Vegas. Officers attempted crisis negotiating while the Dam was closed to traffic, but after 3 hours, Joyce jumped over the backside of the dam about 4:00 a.m. Authorities recovered his body 700 feet below. The Bureau of Reclamation said there have been about 30 suicides at the Dam since construction was completed in 1935.

OFFROADER DIES IN ROLLOVER

Mohave County - Mohave County Sheriff's deputies responded to an off-road single vehicle rollover accident near Lake Havasu City at Eureka Mine Road and N. Kiowa Boulevard early Saturday 9/25 morning. Around 12:16 a.m. deputies discovered the scene of a rollover accident of a 1987 Suzuki Samurai that was occupied by two male adults. The driver was injured and was air lifted to Good Samaritan in Phoenix. Later that day, at about 1:00 p.m., the driver identified as James Edward Callen, 25, of Lake Havasu City was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan. The male passenger was uninjured. The accident is still under investigation.

WOLF HOMICIDE UPDATE

Bullhead City - The investigation in the stabbing death of Kiera Wolf is still under investigation. Suspects King, Omatsu and Seibert were arrested and charged with First Degree Murder. As the investigation continues, investigators have learned that the motive in this case is related to illicit drugs. While the specifics of the motive are unknown, one speculation is that the victim “talked to much about the illegal drug activities.

THREE ROLLOVERS ON I-40 IN A WEEK

Needles - The California Highway Patrol reported a fatal accident late last week where the driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel. Early Friday morning a 2005 Chevy Impala ran into a concrete culvert while traveling at speeds of 80-85 mph. The car proceeded to flip over, coming to rest on its roof. Each of the car's four passengers was wearing their seatbelts. The driver of a Hertz rental car, Susan Dunham, suffered minor injuries. Two passengers in the backseat were airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas for further treatment, and a 17-year-old girl from Montclair, CA was pronounced dead en route to Western Arizona Regional Medical Center. There were no witnesses to the crash.
This accident makes the third rollover in a week on or near the Interstate. In each one, the drivers were believed to have fallen asleep behind the wheel. CHP warned that driving while you’re fatigued, or tired, is just as bad as DUI. This is an example of what can happen if you don’t get proper sleep. You just become drowsy, your eyes shut down, and your car drifts. It’s just as bad as being under the influence – it’s going to get somebody hurt or killed.

MOHAVE VALLEY MAN DIES AT RACETRACK

Buttonwillow, CA - Two men were killed Sunday at Buttonwillow Raceway when a convertible sports car overturned while motoring on the track during a non-racing event. The passenger in the vehicle, 70-year-old Ronald Yates of Mohave Valley, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, 46-year-old Ronald Burnett of Cypress, CA, died while being transported by helicopter to the medical center. The accident is said to have occurred near a remote stretch of track called Lost Hill, known to racers as Magic Mountain.

FUMES RESULT IN CHILD ABUSE

Fort Mohave - Mohave County Sheriff deputies responded to a "loud generator" call at a Fort Mohave residence late Saturday around 10:00 p.m. After no response to their knocks, they saw a child asleep on the floor through the screen door. With the safety of the child in mind deputies entered the home and it took several attempts to wake the 11 year-old sleeping child. Deputies were said to have discovered a 5 month-old baby sleeping in a bedroom, but found no adult in the house. Almost an hour later a vehicle with the presumed parents arrived at the residence. They had just ran to the store, but the driver and the reported mother had the smell of alcoholic beverages. Deputies arrested Tammi Elizabeth Beam, 33, and Jason Scott Burnett, 33, on charges of child abuse and Beam was also arrested for Driving Under the Influence. The children have been placed in the custody of Arizona Child Protective Services.

ONE DEAD IN OVERDOSE

Bullhead City - On Thursday 9/23 Bullhead City Police officers responded to a call on Del Rey Drive and discovered a mobile home that contained the body of Ryan Benjamin Sadlow, 25 in the kitchen. There was no electricity in the mobile home. They also observed hypodermic needles, a lighter, spoon and a brown substance, possibly heroin, on the kitchen table. Additional paraphernalia was located in a bedroom. Also at the residence was Mark Gale, 41 years of age, who was being attended to by Bullhead Fire Department ambulance personnel. Information from a neighbor indicated that they had recently obtained heroin and were going to share it. The brown substance, as well as the paraphernalia, was collected as evidence. The substance was sent to the D.P.S. Crime Lab for analysis.

FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix - Recent investigations about Arizona’s Juvenile Corrections Department (AJDC) and Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) have made headlines. Although these problems started years ago, my office is addressing them and implementing appropriate reforms. When I learned that personnel at DMV were issuing illegal driver’s licenses, I immediately formed a task force to address the problem. Recommended reforms are already under way. An Inspector General for the ADOT has been appointed to oversee these efforts and ensure that effective safeguards are implemented. Investigation of fraud, misconduct and abuse are now subject to independent review. Our action plan also establishes new procedures in DMV offices to reduce the potential for fraud. We have decreased the number of acceptable documents that can be used to obtain a driver’s license and have added document-verification experts to DMV offices.
Please don't hesitate to contact my office at (800) 253-0883 or visit my website at www.governor.state.az.us.

RACE FOR THE WATER

Mohave County - The Mohave County Water Authority is trying to secure a Colorado River water allocation that will be divided and sold to Authority members Lake Havasu City and Bullhead City. MCWA President Tom Griffin said the water could be purchased from the Yuma area Cibola Valley Irrigation District within 60 days. Griffin said the MCWA could acquire up to 5,900 acre-feet of water per year from the District that he says is trying to sell an equal amount to the Hopi Indian Tribe. Griffin said the MCWA, in turn, intends to sell the water early next year when appropriate state and federal approvals are obtained. The Lake Havasu City council has authorized an expenditure of up to $5.35-million to purchase up to 3,000 acre-feet of water per year from the MCWA. The Bullhead City council has authorized an expenditure of up to $6.25-million to buy up to 2,500 acre-feet of water per year. Griffin said he believes it's likely that the water acquired from the District would be equally divided between the two cities.

FIRE STARTED BY PROPANE TORCH

Kingman - A detached garage that burned in Kingman has been determined to have been caused by an illegal weed propane torch. The owner apparently put the weed burner away hot, igniting combustibles in the garage. The recently filled gas tank of one of his vehicles ruptured, and spread to a pair of propane tanks. In all, the fire did an estimated $20,000 worth of damage. The fire department does not expect the owner to be charged for his illegal weed burner use, as he was cooperative in the investigation and the fire did not damage any property other than his own.

KIDS USE ROCKS FOR ROBBERY

Bullhead City - Two 16-year-old Bullhead City boys reportedly approached a man in his front yard with baseball size rocks in their hands and demanded all of his money. Officers were able to catch the suspects after a brief foot chase and the two were then booked into the Kingman Juvenile Detention Center on charges including felony aggravated robbery.

BANK ROBBER CAUGHT

Kingman - An elderly man used a note and his 25-foot motor home to allegedly rob a Kingman bank. Kingman Police responded to a call that the First Arizona Savings Bank had just been robbed. Reportedly an elderly man walked into the bank Tuesday morning and handed the cashier a note that indicated he had a bomb in his pocket. The cashier surrendered the money and the bank robber, Melvin Neva, age 67 of Golden Valley, got off with around $3700. An officer that was in the area spotted an man driving a 1972 Pace Arrow motor home driving southbound on Golf Dr. from the area. Officers affected a traffic stop and saw a clear plastic bag full of money lying under the front seat. Seven minutes after the initial report, Neva was in custody and the money had been recovered.

ANOTHER METH LAB SHUT DOWN

Bullhead City - Last week 55-year-old Michael Stech Jr. was arrested. Bullhead City Police said that there was a bunch of paraphernalia and chemicals found. "What I saw was a usable amount of finished product, of a powdery substance located on a plate in the oven," said Carrie Conner of BHC-PD. "There were different glass beakers with an unknown liquid in them... just all the stuff that it takes to cook methamphetamine was in there." Four felony charges, including possession of chemicals and equipment to manufacture dangerous drugs, were levied against Stech. He was booked on all charges and taken to the jail in Kingman.

POT BUST TURNS UP BOMB PARTS

Lake Havasu City - About a month ago a large pot bust that took place in Lake Havasu City. Anthony Michael (Tony) Guarnieri, 22, of Lake Havasu City was arrested after a police search of his home turned up a sophisticated marijuana grow operation, dozens of plants, garbage bags filled with contraband, a number of weapons and bomb making parts. However, Guarnieri had only pled guilty to attempted possession of marijuana for sale, an offense that will get only probation and community service. Public Defender Steve Hauser, who represented Guarnieri, said his client took advantage of a great deal. Guarnieri is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 22.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE MONTH

Bullhead City - October has been designated National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and in a statement released by Sen. Jon Kyl’s office announced Wednesday the Senate’s passage of a resolution aimed at raising awareness of domestic violence in the United States. The senator offers some advice to anyone who feels like they’ve been a victim: “Seek help by talking about the problem with law enforcement, a counselor, a relative, or a friend. Don’t suffer in silence.” Locally, the Tri-State Victims Resource Center will be working at awareness this month. To find out more about National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, call the Tri-State Victim’s Resource Center at 704-7070.

THANK YOU!

G.S. - Another successful rummage sale! I would like to say thanks to everyone who generously donated to the sale. I am especially grateful to the more than 45 volunteers that stepped to the plate and helped transfer, unpack, set up, price and sell the tons of merchandise we had accumulated. Shame on me for mis-judging the loyalty of the Women's Club members and their spouses. An additional thanks goes to all of the non-members that pitched in to help. Then I would like to say thanks to the shoppers. You are the ones that put us over the top. I would like to thank everyone that has supported me over this past 10 months. It is a great feeling to know that I have the respect of so many. In the past 10 months we have had 18 new members join our ranks. That, in itself speaks well for the reputation of the Women's Club. Let's keep it going. The Women's Club is open to all area women. There are no dues and no requirements for becoming a member. Thanks Again, Pat Colloran, Pres. Golden Shores Women's Club

COUNTY GETS HIGHWAY 95 UPDATE

Mohave County - State transportation planners and consultants discussed projects associated with area highways during a special Mohave County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday. The main focus was on proposed construction of a brand new stretch of State Route 95. The new highway will span 37-42 miles, depending upon how much meandering occurs as it runs from selected junction points with Interstate 40 to the south and State Route 68 to the north. The feasibility study for the new 95 began last November. The planning team is recommending one of four north-south routes that have been analyzed. The next phase will be a design concept study and an environmental document. The project could cost $250-million and as many as 20 years to complete the project.

NEED PERMITS FOR MOBILE HOME

Mohave County - Buying and setting a mobile home on property can raise your temper to the boiling point. That's because there are two different permits you must have, a building permit and a zoning permit. A building permit is needed for any structure larger than 120 s.f. You must apply for a county permit, then apply for a state permit. Mobile homes get zoning permits unless you are just adding to an existing mobile. The county and the state wants to inspect everything from the septic on up. Then if you are in a flood zone, another permit from the flood division is required. Then another permit for your septic system. If you put in a water well, thats another permit from the county and the state. And on and on... Permits can range from $35 to $735 each and then there are restrictions and regulations that go with each one. Fun huh!

    WEEKLY FUNNY

This morning--from a cave somewhere in Pakistan--Taliban Minister of Migration, Mohammed Omar, warned the United States that if military action against Iraq continues, Taliban authorities will cut off America's supply of convenience store managers. If this action does not yield sufficient results, cab drivers will be next.
    It's getting ugly.

    WEEKLY PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, We try so hard to not get weary in well doing but it seems the more we try the more weary we get so we are asking You to work thru us, in us. Establish Your joy in us that we might have strength to carry on, to continue when people are cruel or indifferent. We know Jesus took the beating that bought our peace so we yield to Him now everything that is working to steal that peace. May we lift up our eyes to You in hope today.
We pray and ask these things in the Name of Jesus. Amen.
