CITATION ISSUED FOR DOG ATTACK

G.S. - Mohave County Animal Control responded on Thursday 10/21 to a call from a lady that was attacked by a pack of dogs. The victim, Syverson, said, "While walking my dog on a leash in the desert this morning, I was attacked by a pack of dogs. Three ran off quickly as I yelled at them. Three more jumped on my dog. My dog fought them off and they ran for home. I followed the dogs and knocked o the door at 12779 Yuma. After saying good morning and explaining to the owner of the dogs what happened, and that I was now in pain (I am disabled), he subjected me to verbal abuse and a very threatening demeanor." Syverson added, "This is to warn everyone that when walking, bicycling, or otherwise enjoying the desert in this area of Golden Shores, you must be prepared to defend yourself or your pet."
A citation was issued for dogs at large to Gary Chandler of Golden Shores.
Officer Mark Durst said people NEED to be calling in when there are dogs on the lose, and they need an address of where the dogs live and they WILL issue citations. Officer Durst said the "loose dog" situation in Golden Shores is not getting any better as there are only two animal control officers for the entire county, but if you have a complaint or a problem with dogs, you can call Animal Control at 768-3125.

UNLAWFUL FLIGHT - DUI

G.S. - Mohave County Sheriff's deputies arrested Michael Terry Hogle, 35, of Golden Shores, Saturday evening 10/16 for unlawful flight from law enforcement officers, felony DUI with a blood alcohol concentration over .08%. At around 10:00 p.m. deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle failed to stop. Deputies got the vehicle to stop at Cortaro Drive and Maricopa Drive and contacted Hogle, the driver. Deputies smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Hogle. During conversations with Hogle, he admitted to have been drinking. Hogle was transported to the Fort Mohave Tribal Police station where he performed the field sobriety test and an analysis of his blood alcohol concentration that revealed a .099%. Hogle was transported and booked into the Mohave County jail.

ATTEMPTED ESCAPE FAILS

Mohave Valley - Mohave County Sheriff's deputies along with Fort Mohave Tribal Police Officers arrested Clifford Lee Abrams, 37, and Jessica Rhae Hurley, 22, both from Mohave Valley, early Wednesday morning 10/20. Abrams was arrested for escape and for a failure to appear warrant issued by Mohave County Superior Court. In a routine traffic stop, deputies recognized Abrams and knew he had an outstanding warrant. As Abrams was exiting the vehicle per the deputy's request, he took off running into a field. Abrams would not comply with the deputy's orders to stop. Deputies followed Abrams about 125 yards where they struggled to apprehend him. Deputies further restrained Abrams with pepper spray. Deputies also contacted Hurley, a passenger, and a records check showed her to have an outstanding warrant. A search of the vehicle and the surrounding area revealed syringes approximately 10 feet from the vehicle. During conversations with Hurley, she admitted to throwing the syringes from her purse. Abrams and Hurley were transported and booked into the Mohave County jail.

G.S. - The Golden Shores Fire Department is not doing Halloween this year as they have done in years past. Children are invited to visit the VFW's Haunted House. Please do not send your children out without adult supervision.

SHERIFF ATTACKED ON WAGES

Mohave County - Sheriff Tom Sheahan was probably feeling really good and proud of the accomplishments of Mohave County when he found out he was the target of a recall over the same issues. The Board of Supervisors has approved another financial boost for the Sheriff's office that aims to counter the compression problem that Mohave County officials believe is causing officers to leave the Department. The Board voted Monday in support of a plan that would provide the agency with another $453,000. Pay adjustments would range from 5-percent at the low end up to 32-percent in the case of a Sgt. in line for a $9,300 raise. Sheriff Sheahan said compression and higher pay from other agencies has seen his Department lose a number of seasoned officers.
Then Sheriff Sheahan discovered he was the victim of a recall effort formally launched Monday. Proposing to recall the sheriff are Kingman residents George Bagubie and J.N. Skousen, organizers of the Mohave County Citizens for Accountability and Justice. Bagubie blamed the sheriff for a low level salary and benefit plan that has seen seasoned and valued members of the Department leave for higher paying jobs with other agencies. Sheriff Sheahan responded that the pay problem was substantially corrected during Monday's meeting of the Board of Supervisors meeting. The Sheriff also said he should not be blamed for a budget established by county supervisors. Bagubie, however, said the sheriff should have done a better job in stating his case to have more dollars allocated to his Department. Bagubie said Sheahan is also to blame for drugs and drug-related crime and stated, "I believe his (Sheahan's) philosophy is to contain it rather than solve it."
The Sheriff responded that the Department has made more drug arrests during his tenure than ever before. "We're putting more people in jail, busting methamphetamine labs and doing what needs to be done," Sheahan said. "I have taken this job very seriously and have done a good job," the Sheriff said, "and I've got an outstanding staff that has also done an outstanding job."
The Sheriff said he enjoys solid support throughout the county - support that he said was clearly measured and demonstrated in past elections as well as by the fact that no one stepped forward to challenge him in the current election cycle.
"We have a lot of wide-ranging support," Bagubie said, "and it's non-partisan. This is not a Republican or Democrat issue - this is everybody."
County Elections Director Allen Tempert said it was not immediately clear how many valid signatures the ouster effort would require to bring the recall to a public vote. However, he said Bagubie and supporters have 120 days to collect recall signatures.

FLU SHOT PRICE GOUGING

Washington D.C. - Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) is shining a light on the possibility of price gouging. The State of Arizona has no explicit price gouging laws, but a statement issued by Kyl’s office is asking Arizonans to report any instances of overcharging to state officials who will forward the information to the proper federal authorities. Kyl called the practice of price gouging “indefensible” and said “Those responsible must be held accountable”. The issue has come up due to a shortage of flu vaccine caused by manufacturing problems at Chiron, the British company responsible for between 46-48 million doses of vaccine. The statement asks that consumers call the Arizona Attorney General’s Office at 1-800-352-8431 to report any incidents of price gouging.

FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix - The recent flu vaccine shortage has prompted Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano to call for a National Flu Vaccine Summit. In a letter sent to the Centers for Disease Control Monday, Napolitano requested that governors from all 50 states and public health officials come together to address the recurring problem of vaccine shortages. In a statement issued by her office, Napolitano said, “The vaccine shortage this year is a reality, and we have to deal with it”. She proposes addressing three separate issues: how to replace outdated vaccine technology, what preparations are being made by the federal government for next years flu season, and how to deal with the current shortage. According to the statement, Napolitano would like to see a national plan developed to deal with similar situations.
Please don't hesitate to contact my office at (800) 253-0883 or visit my website at www.governor.state.az.us.

FLU SHOTS ARE COMING!

G.S. - Debbie Muston of the Golden Shores Fire Department issued a statement today that flu shots are coming to Golden Shores on Tuesday, November 2nd, beginning at 9:00 a.m. until the vaccine is gone. However, there is a catch to it -- You must be at least 65 years old, or if under 65 with a high risk medical condition the nurse will screen you for elegibility. The cost of the flu shots is becoming like gasoline, or worse. The price this year for a flu shot is $21 and a pneumonia shot is $32. If you have a Medicare Card, it's FREE. All residents must bring proof of residence to receive a vaccine.

BANK EMAIL SCAM

Tri-state - Wells Fargo Bank is warning customers of an Internet scam apparently setup to get personal banking information from customers. The email, which looks very official and is situated on Wells Fargo letterhead and has a link with a root domain of wellsfargo.com, is asking bank customers to immediately verify banking information due to a large amount of identity theft. According to Michelle Scott, vice president of public relations for Wells Fargo bank, the bank never circulated such an email and said they never ask for personal information to be submitted from email. Scott said that the bank believes these emails are being circulated off mass mailing lists as they are going to people that don’t even bank with Wells Fargo. She said that Well Fargo would cover any loss to customers as a result of fraud.

CORRECTION:

G.S. - The story that ran on October 8, "BOY, 14, GOES TO JAIL" had some misinformation. The Coleman boy was confused with another boy who had nothing to eat. This correction is to say that Kory A. Coleman was not angry because he had nothing to eat. This editor apologizes for the misinformation.

BREAST CANCER - THE SIGNS

  - According to the National Cancer Institute, the frequency of breast cancer in women is second only to skin cancer. It is important to know if you are at risk. Personal and family histories of breast cancer, certain breast changes, and certain genes can all affect breast-cancer risk. Talk to your doctor about your specific situation. It is also important to know the signs of breast cancer: early detection is key to treatment and recovery. Performing a monthly self-examination is still recommended by many health professionals, as is having a yearly exam performed by your doctor. In addition, the National Cancer Institute suggests keeping an eye out for the following signs:
A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area.
A change in the size or shape of the breast.
Nipple discharge or tenderness.
An inverted nipple.
Ridges or pitting on the breast (resembling an orange peel).
A change in the look or feel of the breast, areola or nipple (such as temperature, swelling, redness or a scaly feel).
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, see your doctor for a diagnosis and possible treatment. If you are over 40, mammograms are suggested annually.

Dear Heavenly Father, Give us wisdom as we seek You. Give us the grace to accept Your will for our lives, help us to trust that You know better than we do so that when we do pray, we are sincerely seeking Your Will and not our will in Your name. Sometimes Lord we have many 'good' ideas that are not 'God' ideas. Give us wisdom and courage to know the difference and teachable spirits to accept it. Help us to grow up in You in all areas.
We pray and ask these things in the Name of Jesus. Amen.
