TOPOCK ELEMENTARY FIRED UP!

G.S. - “The Heat Is On”. That is the statement that is displayed on the back of Topock Elementary cross country’s team sweatshirts. And Tess Berryman has proven that the heat is on! Tess Berryman, 8th grader represented the State of Arizona Saturday, Nov. 18th at the Western Regional Junior Olympics in El Paso, TX. To qualify for this race, Tess went to Phoenix on Sat. Nov.13th to compete in the State Junior Olympics, where she placed 4th. Tess’s time 16:02 made her become the fastest female in her age division to represent Mohave County. “Tess has been preparing herself physically and mentally for the past year with early morning runs and maintaining a healthy diet. What is amazing to me is that she still manages to have A+ grade on her report cards.” stated Topock’s cross country coach, John Warren. “As I have mentioned before, Tess makes the people around her, better. It is no surprise that she has come this far.” Berryman placed 36th out of 70 runners in the Girls Youth Event. Tess is an awesome example of someone who sets and achieves her goals,” said her mother, Wendy Berryman. Tess stated, "I have really learned a lot this cross country season, I appreciate all the help Mr. Warren has given me. Also the staff and students at the school have been a great support system for me and I want to public thank all of them."

FIGHT AT POST OFFICE

G.S. - On 11/29 While driving on Powell Lake Road in Golden Shores a truck passed me unexpectedly, making me almost lose control of my vehicle. As I approached the Post Office, I saw the truck parked by the front door. I parked by the street and walked to the front door. I came out as they were leaving and his wife yelled something at me. I did not respond. As I opened my car door he blocked me in and got out aggressively. He accused me of saying something to his wife, which I denied, then he asked if I was going to hit him with that club. I told him it was for my steering wheel. I thought the best thing to do was leave, but I accidentally backed into their truck. I pulled forward and was attacked by him. He tried to pull me out of my Jeep, punching me in the face, knocking my tooth out.
Later one of the officers looked and said there was no damage. I made a statement about their driving, trapping me so I couldn't leave, knocking my tooth out, taking my car keys, and holding me against my will, but he didn't go to jail and I was charged.
I believe this was racially motivated on their part, because of the comment she made about them being Native American and me being white and not belonging here. They were the aggressors and to my knowledge I had the right to defend myself but did not. If you happened to have witnessed any of this, please give me a call at 768-9888. I will ask that all charges be dropped against me and he be charged with assault and for full compensation of my tooth plus Attorney fees and court costs. Thank you.
Sincerely, Jim Lehnberg

SUSPECT DIES AFTER STRUGGLE

Bullhead City - Just before 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning 11/27 Mohave County Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call from a female stating that her visiting boyfriend was being attacked by another man. The first deputy on the scene was told that the boyfriend and suspect were on the porch fighting. The deputy found two males on the floor of the porch. The boyfriend was on the suspects back using a headlock or chokehold and yelled that the suspect had cut him. The deputy, while attempting to handcuff the suspect, saw a razor knife fall to the floor from the his right hand. While handcuffing the suspect the deputy noticed the suspect was not responsive and the Hualapai Fire Department was called. The suspect was pronounced dead.
The Sheriff's Office turned the investigation over to the Bullhead City Police Department. James Dowell, 50, of Needles, CA was identified as the boyfriend. The suspect's identity is being witheld pending notification of next of kin.

HOLIDAY SCAM WARNING

Arizona - The Arizona Attorney General’s Office has issued a warning about phony holiday charities. Arizonans should be wary, especially regarding phone solicitations. Some common sense advice: always get information from the caller such as the name of the organization, address, phone number, and how the funds are going to be used. It's also good to find out if the charity is local. Never disclose personal information you are uncomfortable about.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH

G.S. - It is very exciting in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade math. The reason is ALEKS, an anagram for Artificial Learning Environment Knowledge System. Students with internet access outside of school will be able to access ALEKS from home or from anywhere. Of course, the more a student practices math, the more math a student masters.
The purpose of ALEKS is to supplement the regular math curriculum by identifying what the student knows and needs to learn in order to progress to the next level. The real value of this system is that it customizes math practice sessions specifically to fit a student’s needs.
ALEKS also tracks the student’s learning and mastery of skills, and then assesses the student’s progress. ALEKS provides statistics in the form of circle graphs, reports of skills mastered since the last assessment, amount of time a student has spent on ALEKS, and expected time needed for the student to master new goals. Reports are available to students, parents, and teachers.
The middle school math students will pilot this program for Topock Elementary School. I am very grateful to Mr. Agenbroad and the School Board for their vision and support, providing tools to meet the needs of our students. Once again, they have provided the means for our students to succeed. Submitted by: Betty Payne, Math teacher

FROM THE GOVERNOR

Phoenix - Water has been a top priority for my administration since the day I took office. In March 2003 I established the Arizona Drought Task Force and charged it with developing the state’s first plan to deal with drought preparation and water conservation. Their recommendations were presented to me in October and are a critical step toward long-term management of Arizona’s water. For our state to prosper, we must address our water shortages with innovative solutions. We must do a better job of helping Arizona’s communities manage their water supply and develop strategies that will enable all citizens to reduce consumption. Water conservation must become part of our daily routine in Arizona. I have instructed the Arizona Department of Water Resources to help rural water providers and local governments modernize their water-usage plans, establish basin-by-basin solutions, identify resources to stretch existing water supplies and develop new ones. This isn’t just a water concern. For Arizona, it affects our long-term economic development.
Please don't hesitate to contact my office at (800) 253-0883 or visit my website at www.governor.state.az.us.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT

G.S. - On behalf, of the students and staff of Topock Elementary School I would like to publicly thank Michael and Julie Moody, of Mohave Valley. We received a christmas card, this card read the following:
Each year my husband and I take advantage of the AZ. tax credit offered by the state, by donating to a school in our area. I read the article in the newspaper about you wanting to purchase a portable sound system. This year we made the decision to send our money "out your way"! We hope the money makes a dent in the total amount needed and that you will be enjoying this new system real soon! The timing could not have been better as maybe there are others out there who might not have taken advantage of the tax credit yet and need to do so by the end of the year-this might prompt them to send the money to you! Let's hope so!
Best Wishes, Michael and Julie Moody
Enclosed with this heart-felt message, was a check in the amount of $250.00. I cannot express in words how much this meant to us! Their selfless act of kindness is a wonderful example to all of us. Thank you, so much Mr. and Mrs. Moody! Happy Holidays and Best Wishes to you too!
Wendy L. Berryman

    WEEKLY FUNNY

    WEEKLY QUOTE

Live all you can - it's a mistake not to. It doesn't so much matter what you do in particular, so long as you have your life. If you haven't had that, what have you had? -- Henry James

    WEEKLY PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, We pray that You will make a way for Your people where there seems no way. Prices rise daily but we choose to believe You are the God of more than enough! We know You are our source, not our jobs, our banks or our financial systems nor even our governments. You are Lord of Lords and we give thanks to You today and everyday! You know our every need and You meet them, taking from them places of excess giving to the very need.
We pray and ask these things in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
If you are reading the printed version and this is your first time to pray this or similar prayer, please contact or attend your local church.
