LAKE HAVASU HOMICIDE

Lake Havasu City - Police are investigating a homicide that occured late Sunday night in front of Thunderbolt Middle School. Officers responded to a report of shots fired about 11:18 pm. Upon arrival they found a vehicle against a fence in front of the school with the driver dead from a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was identified as Margato Beristain Jimenez of Lake Havasu City. Police are actively looking for Tony Roger Lawson, 29, who is the sole suspect in the Jimenez murder. Police describe Lawson as a being a white male 6'2” tall and 245 pounds, with blonde hair and green eyes. Investigators say that Lawson should be considered armed and dangerous. No motive for the murder has been released at this time. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Lawson are urged to contact Lake Havasu City police at (928) 855-4111 or silent witness at (928) 854-TIPS.

DEADLY TRAFFIC STOP

Kingman - A traffic stop Monday left the driver dead and a Kingman police officer wounded. A vehicle, driven by Donald Ray Williams, age 18 of Kingman was stopped for an equipment warning. When the officer approached the car Williams allegedly opened fire. Officer Chastain was struck in the right shoulder, returned fire and struck the suspect three times in the left torso. Williams died at the scene. Chastain is in stable condition and the incident is being investigated by MCSO.
UPDATE 12/16: Officer Chastain is out of the hospital and feeling well. Williams'condition remains unchanged.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR

G.S. - Third grade teacher Jeff Taylor receives congratulations from Assistant Principal John Warren
G.S. - Topock Elementary third grade teacher, Jeff Taylor, was named Teacher of the Year by VFW 6306 Auxiliary at a recent school assembly. Taylor was nominated by Assistant Principal John Warren. Warren wrote “Mr. Taylor lives the all-American lifestyle, teaches the all-American lifestyle and is developing his students into all-American citizens.” Taylor is energetic and enthusiastic believing that all kids can be successful. He also believes that it doesn't matter where you are now, if you work hard, are dedicated, and have a positive outlook, you can be where you want to be. Taylor said, “You don't have to end up what your parents are. You don't have to be what they are.” His father was a lawyer.

ASSAULT SUSPECT SOUGHT

Bullhead City - Bullhead City Police are looking for an assault suspect. The victim reported that a tall, thin, black male in his forties going by the name of John attacked her and attempted to drag her into a wash area. Apparently there was no sexual assault, but that was the suspected intent. Anyone with information is asked to contact the BHC Police at 928-763-1999.


 

MILLIONS OF BEES ON HIGHWAY

Las Vegas - A truck hauling 12 million honeybees hit a wall on a ramp, spilling its load shortly before the evening rush hour. The truck was carrying 480 colonies, with 25,000 insects each, to California when it struck the wall Wednesday afternoon. The collision spilled bees and honey on the highway and caused troopers to close the southbound ramp connecting Interstate 15 and U.S. 95 for over four hours. State police believe the driver lost control on the ramp. Authorities decided capturing the bees alive would be to costly, and firefighters drowned the insects.


MOTORCYCLE MEETS SEMI

Bullhead City - The driver and passenger of a motorcycle were transported to Western Arizona Medical Center Tuesday afternoon following an accident with a semi in Bullhead City. It is not known if the bike actually struck the truck, but both riders were thrown underneath it. The driver was able to crawl out from under the truck. The passenger had to be extricated from underneath. Both driver and passenger were reported to be in extremely critical condition.


COYOTES AND CAR-JACKING

Bullhead City - A southern California man is safe after he reportedly being car-jacked at gunpoint in Bullhead City over the weekend. Police report that around 6:30 pm Sunday evening Victor Cabrera was putting oil in the borrowed 95 Black Isuzu Rodeo at the Chevron station on Hwy. 68. Two Hispanic males approached Cabrera and allegedly demanded the vehicle. One of the suspects reportedly brandished a gun. Leaving the vehicle and heading toward the station, Cabrera is said to have been approached by a third Hispanic male suspect in a red Pontiac Bonneville. The third suspect is thought to be a look-out. The victim was not harmed and California Highway Patrol recovered the vehicle later finding 10 illegal aliens and one of the three suspects. The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending against the suspect in custody.

TOPOCK CULTURE FAIR

G.S. - Topock Elementary School held a cultural fair 12/09. Each class chose a country, continent, or ancient civilization, comparing culture, geography and food to America. A presentation for parents was performed. The fourth grade class chose Africa. Student Lee Csaszar was master of ceremonies. Visual aids were made on animals, pyramids, diamonds, mummies, and Kente cloth. African yam balls were offered to parents who said they tasted like pumpkin pie. The sixth through eighth grades used the library for their presentation. The props were a Mayan pyramid home, and a game of pitching balls into a hole in a rock. The kindergarten and first grade chose France and strung a French flag with words in English and French. The third grade chose Guatemala and the fifth grade presented Spain. English words with Spanish translations were shown. The second grade selected Russia. Irina Conley, from Russia, spoke about russian children and brought samples of Russian food. Principal Brett Agenbroad said he was very happy to see so many parents turnout. for the fair.

CHURCH CHRISTMAS PROGRAM

 G.S. - Golden Shores Community Baptist Church presented a Christmas program on 12/12. The Children's Drama Club performed 'Twas The Night Before. The drama included the angelic appearance before shepherds, Joseph and Mary with baby Jesus, the wise men and King Herod. Theresa Sepulveda directed. In the cast were: Sendal Steward as the story reader, Alicia Cummings as Gabriel, angels: Jackey Haidle, Kali King and Ashley Muehlhausen, little angels: Sarai Daniel, Kitti Daniel and Jessica Haidle, shepherds: Bryton Robinson and Kim Spensor, Robert Campondonico as Joseph with Barbara “BJ” Boyer as Mary, wise men: Jacob Boyer, Matthew Daniel, Shay Robinson, Bryton Robinson as King Herod, Jessica Haidle as the priest, Alicia Cummings and Sarai Daniel as townspeople and Matthew Daniel as the innkeeper. The audience joined in singing Christmas hymns and Sheri Syverson accompanied on keyboard. The play ended with “Silent Night.” Applause was enthusiastic for the little actors' efforts relaying the story of Jesus.

ARSON POSSIBLE IN BHC FIRE

 Bullhead City - A trailer fire in the early morning hours Thursday is regarded as suspicious in nature. This fire is considered suspicious only because the trailer was vacant. No one lived there and no gas or electricity were supplied to the unit. When fire crews arrived there was flame and smoke coming from the front of the trailer. There are no damage estimates at this time but authorities do not believe the dwelling to be a total loss.

MCSO DUI SATURATION

 Mohave County - Mohave County Sheriff's Office was part of a DUI Saturation project in Kingman, Golden Valley, Fort Mohave, Mohave Valley and Golden Shores on Saturday 12/11. The results were: 38 Total traffic contacts, 43 Traffic violations (cited or warned), 3 DUI Arrest (including 1 Extreme DUI), 1 Aggravated DUI Arrest, 1 Public alcohol consumption arrest, 1 Felony warrant arrest, 2 Driving Suspended arrests

ONE STOP - TWO ARRESTS

 Fort Mohave - Sheriff's deputies arrested Douglas Lavon Herrick, 34, of Golden Valley, and Daniel Wayne Dierkes, 27, of Kingman, Saturday 12/11 evening. Herrick was arrested for aggravated DUI, and Dierkes was arrested on a fugitive warrant from California. About 9:30 p.m. deputies conducted a traffic stop at Aztec Road and Highway 95 and a records check revealed Herrick to have a suspended driver's license for a prior DUI. Deputies smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Herrick, who admitted he had been drinking. Following the field sobriety tests, Herrick was taken into custody and transported to the Substation where an analysis showed his blood alcohol concentration at .169%. He was booked into the jail without incident. A records check on the passenger, Dierkes, revealed an outstanding warrant and he was booked into the Mohave County Jail.


VFW POST 6306 ACTIVITIES

COMMUNITY CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS PARTY
December 18 is the day for Golden Shores kids Christmas party. The party will be held at the Community Center from 3-7 p.m. VFW 6306 and auxiliaries are sponsoring the party. The VFW is seeking donations of gifts for the kids. Bring gifts to the post unwrapped. The gifts will be put into age groups and then wrapped. If a person would like to mail a check, please mail to VFW 6306 at P.O. Box 759 and mark the memo with "Christmas."

BHC FD STRETCHED THIN

Bullhead City - While Bullhead City FD was responding to a motorcycle and truck accident Tuesday afternoon, another fire call elsewhere stretched resources thin. Stations further away from the area started to respond. An engine left the motorcycle crash and responded. Once on the scene smoke was seen coming from the house and the windows were hot indicating a dangerous back-draft condition. An elderly victim was found dead at the scene. The cause of the fire is believed to be smoldering tobacco. The victim reportedly had no working smoke detectors in the house, presumably contributing to the tragedy. The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of family.

Oatman - The Oatman Outlaws are coming through again. For three years the Oatman Outlaws have donated 15 new bicycles to the Mohave County Sheriff's Office. The Outlaws put on a gunfight show everyday at high noon and 3 p.m. in Oatman on Route 66. The MCSO personnel work with the Kingman Salvation Army to collect bikes for underprivileged children in Mohave County during the holiday season. The group is headed by Rod "Outlaw Willie" Hall and his wife Sultana, they presented Sheriff Tom Sheahan with their donations. Sheriff Tom Sheahan said "Each year Oatman Outlaw's have come through to assist the Sheriff's Office and their donations are bigger each year. We really appreciate their efforts and generosity!".

HELP FOR MOHAVE AND LAPAZ

Phoenix - The Oversight Council on Driving or Operating Under the Influence Abatement has awarded over $1.3-million in grant money to police, sheriff and tribal agencies to combat increased drunk driving numbers over the holidays. According to the council, just over a million is going to 43 state, local and tribal agencies for enforcement and judicial programs, while $360-thousand has gone to nine departments to fund innovative programs. La Paz County was awarded a $27-thousand grant for new equipment and Mohave County got a small award as well.

WALKER'S CONTRACT RENEWED

Mohave County - Mohave County Manager, Ron Walker had his contract renewed for another three and a half years in a two to one vote on Monday. Walker will stay at his current pay rate. The only adjustment to Walker's contract is a slight increase in his life insurance policy and that he will receive the same cost of living adjustments as regular county employees. Lake Havasu City supervisor Buster Johnson voted against renewing Walker's contract.

AGGRAVATED DUI

Fort Mohave - MCSO deputies arrested Howard A. Stalvey, 50, of Fort Mohave, early Friday 12/10 evening for felony aggravated DUI. Approximately 6:50 p.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop at Camino Viejo and Highway 95 and smelled a strong odor of alcohol. A records check revealed Stalvey to have a suspended driver's license. Stalvey admitted to drinking. An analysis revealed his blood alcohol concentration to be .177%. Stalvey was taken into custody and booked into the Mohave County Jail.

VOD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Kingman - VFW District 8 winners of the Voice of Democracy Audio-Essay 2003-2004 were announced at VFW Post 3516, Kingman on 12/11. The theme was “Celebrating Our Veterans Service.” All entries were first place winners at post level. District 8 first place winner was Brittney George, a 12th grade student at Lake Havasu High School. She was sponsored by VFW Post 9401 and auxiliary. Second place winner was Evan Purcell, 12th grade student at River Valley High School and sponsored by VFW 6306 Golden Shores. Third place winner was John Lewis, III an 11th grade student at Mt Tipton High School in Meadview. Dolan Springs VFW 9833 and auxiliary sponsored Lewis. Brittney will now advance to state competition. The state winner will be announced at a banquet in Phoenix Jan. 15, 2005. The state winner will advance to the national competition and will get an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete with winners of the 50 states and U.S. territories at national level for a $25,000 scholarship.

G.S. - Food Care pickup is this Friday, today, at the church at 4:00 p.m. The boxes came early this month because the food bank plans to be closed all next week. Please bring a box or basket.

GSFD TOYS FOR JOY

Mohave County - It is again time to prepare for our Annual Toys for Joy program. We once again would like to ask the help of the Golden Shores residents in donating toys for the children. New and unwrapped toys may be brought into the Fire Station between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Santa will be giving our presents to the children from this area between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on December 24, 2004. Presents will be delivered by Santa to each child's home. Names of children are presently being accepted by the Department at 768-4546. If you know a family that needs assistance this season, have them call us.
Any parents wishing to bring a wrapped present for Santa to deliver to their child on Christmas Eve, please put the child's name on the package and bring to the station no later than December 23.

BANKING WATER FOR NEVADA

Phoenix - The Arizona Water Banking Authority approved the $330-million water deal with Nevada, endorsed by the Central Arizona Project last week. The deal assures Nevada will have access to an additional 1.25 million acre-feet of Colorado River water. In return Nevada pays the cost of $100-million up front and an additional $230-million over the next 10-years. The new agreement guarantees that Arizona will bank 1.25 million acre-feet for Nevada, but puts a cap of 40-thousand acre-feet a year on what they can demand. There are exceptions to the cap and in the deal Nevada has written a letter supporting the removal of Arizona's junior rights status in a water agreement among Arizona, Nevada and California.

RECORD CAROLLING ATTEMPT

Laughlin - The Colorado Belle Hotel Casino in Laughlin will attempt to break a Guinness world record Saturday to help make people aware of Ronald McDonald House charities. The current world record is 1175 carolers singing for 28 minutes and they intend to have 2000 singers for 45 minutes. Registration will be at the valet area Saturday at 10 a.m. with entertainment starting around 12:30.

WARRANT ARREST

Fort Mohave - MCSO deputies arrested and released Tammy Joann Woodward, 35, of Mohave Valley, late Sunday 12/12 morning on a failure to appear warrant from Bullhead City Justice Court. Approximately 11:10 a.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 2300 block of Camp Mohave Road and found Woodward to have an outstanding warrant. Woodward was taken into custody and transported to the District II Substation. The vehicle was released to the owner. Woodward was cited for speeding and inoperative right brake lamp.

LAUGHLIN HITS JACKPOT

Laughlin - Casino owners in Laughlin have reason to smile as numbers continue to exceed those from last year. October was a good month for casinos along the Colorado with regulators indicating that gaming revenues in Laughlin for October were $50.2-million, representing a 6.9-percent increase over last year.
